I had this exact same problem!! My son did start holding it and had to have stool softeners to help him go. But what worked for me was I went to the dollar tree and bought 10 little gifts and wrapped them I told him everytime he goes potty (poop) he gets a gift. He was so excited to open the next present he wanted to go poo in the potty. It took about 20 presents in all. All a dollar and by that time he was so used to going poo it became routine. That was definitely worth the 20 dollars!! Anyways I hope this helps. Good Luck!!!!

I don't think this is all that uncommon. I know of at least 3 mom's who've had this experience with their kids. Those kids requested diapers/pull-ups for many months after being "pee trained" so they could poop. They all eventually started pooping on the potty as well.

My son recently went thru this. In fact I posted a request regarding same. He just started pooping on the toilet! He's going to be 3 in May. It will hapn for you too. In our situation he got sick with diarhea last week and kept having accidents in his underwear faster than he could ask for a diaper so we kept him pants free most of the morning. Fortunately he felt too icky to complain when I put him on the toilet - poor guy. He still asks for a diaper but knows he won't get one. M&M's work as a reward for us.

I was also afraid that he would hold it and get constipated, but i doubt that would happen. We still have little battles every day and he sometimes holds it until later or even the next day.

When my son was potty trainning I found a nice little tid bit of info, when ever he pooed in his underware (or pull up ) take that to the bathroom, dump that (the poop) into the toilet (with your son at your side) I would explain to my son, poopie belongs in the potty as I put it in the toilet, I even went to saying the toilet was the poopie's home, and so he accually would say bye bye poopie, and after about a week of that he started to go more on the potty. I have not had an accident with him for months now and he's 3 1/2. When they are ready they will go without a problem, the only problem you will encounter after potty trainning is doing buttons on the pants LOL Goodluck and I hoped this helped.

I have no answers, but just wanted you to know that I am going through the same thing with my almost 3yr old daughter. She is great at staying dry and going pee in the potty, but will not go poop on the potty. She goes in her underwear instead! Not much fun for me, but this is pretty common and they will go poop in the potty when they decide they are ready. I had the same issue with my older daughter when she was potty training as well.

One tip I've heard (but never tried) is to tell them that they can poop in their pull-up or diaper or whatever, but they have to do it in the bathroom. So then if your son agrees to that and he at least goes and stands (or sits) somewhere in the bathroom, after a few weeks of that, you tell him he has to sit on the toilet, with the lid down. After a few weeks of that, then it's lid up and he's going in the toilet.

Like I said, I've never done it, but I've seen this tip again and again. Good luck.

Rest assured that he will be potty trained by the time he is 13 (LOL...I say that in jest...it will be sooner)!!! When my now 14 yr old was potty training I got the video "Potty Time"...and it worked like a charm. I just asked him awhile ago if he remembered that video...and though he could not recall all of it...he did remember the jingle..."You are a Super Duper Pooper...You Know When You Have to Go...." I totally remember the tune, too. The video is cute and tastefully done. Great peer modeling about potty use...and all is done very discreetly...so, you actually see kids sitting on the potty, but they are always covered up appropriately. I recommend it highly. I used it with my other two, as well.

I am gonig through the exact same thing with my 2 1/2 year old daughter. She is potty trained when it comes to potty but not the poop. I haven't figured out how to make it work. I too am afraid of her holding it in all day, so she still wears diapers to daycare. On weekends she doesn't wear them so much, but she will ask to have a diaper on to poop. I just wanted to let you know I am in the same boat. I posted a question a few weeks ago on it too, but didn't get too many responses.
