Pool Safety Net

We too are getting a katch-a-kid net for the pool. We just bought a house in Plano that we will move into later this summer. After talking to friends they have used this brand and been happy with it.

We also have a katchakid net and it is great. I like it better then the fences as it looks nice when installed. It does take a bit of time to remove and put back, but it is worth it. Good luck!

It works well. It takes some time to get on and off, but would be much easier with a simple shaped pool. Ours has a waterfall wall that is raised on one side which makes it a little harder. It saved our 17 year-old dog from drowning a handful of times. Our son has also driven his little tykes car onto it and it preventing him from going in as well. If a net is what you are looking for, it is a great company. They were great to work with.

We also have a Katch-a-Kid net. We went back and forth between the net and the fence when our twin daughters were born 6 years ago. We finally decided on the net because of the way our yard was set up - a fence just wouldn't work right. We made the right choice. The company was great to work with - they come out and measure your pool and make a net customized just to your pool. It does take a few extra minutes to install, but it is well worth it. Any my husband can walk out onto the net - that's how stable it is. Good Luck!!!

We also have a katch-a-kid net and love it. Not only is it safer, it is much more attractive than a fence and you can purchase a leaf cover to put over the net in the fall/winter and you will not get leaves in the pool, it is great. By age 2, my kids were capable of moving chairs or something to climb over a baby gate in the house, so I knew they could get over the gate. I also have a safety lock on the back door as well as a door chime that goes off whenever that door is opened - multiple layers of safety is the best plan. When we have large parties with lots of kids, I hire a lifeguard - usually $10/hour - great piece of mind when there are a lot of kiddos in the pool. If you ask the katch-a-kid person, they usually have someone in your area with a net that doesn't mind showing it to you.

I just researched nets and fences and decided to go with a fence. Our pool company charges an extra $10 per visit for taking on and putting on the net.

We have a safety fence around our pool. It actually came with the house, so i'm not sure who installed it... :-(

There are recessed holes set in the concrete where the poles go and the netting is attached to the poles - easy to remove and store in the garage, then easy to put back into place. I prefer that, rather than a net that sits above the water.

I had the same concerns when I moved into my home 11 years ago. I discovered a company named "Pool Barrier" located in Dallas, TX. Their number is ###-###-####. It is a small business and the owner installed the fence around the pool himself. It really provided a lot of security and peace of mind for me when my children were out playing in the back yard. The fence had several openings around the pool to get in, and they were not easy to open by children. Our pool is also an odd shape, which was the other reason we went with this option. These fences are custom made for your pool. We kept that pool fence on there for about 8 years, because even after me kids learned how to swim, I was worried that my dogs might fall in the pool, or other children that were over at our house. The owner of the company has since passed, but I know it was bought over by someone else. The service was always great and quick. Although some people might think it is an eye-sore, I wouldn't have done it any other way. It didn't require any work to get into the pool and the fence could also be removed if you didn't want it there for a party.I hope this has helped. Good luck with that.

Pool safety nets are pretty labor intensive and unless they completely and securely overlap the apron of the pool they can be dangerous themselves. A much simpler solution, if practical, is an attractive guard fence with a locking gate.

Most important thing is to get your kiddo(s) pool safe as early as possible. Talk to SwimPlus - they have a really child friendly approach to watersafety - nowhere near as stressful on the child as some of the programs out there.

I am sorry to hijack your question A., but I was wondering if you Moms who have the nets would mind sharing the approximate cost. We have an infant and I want to get the net installed before she gets mobile. Thanks!

I am a grandmother of 5 and loved our safety net when we had our pool in California. The best investment we ever made. It takes a few minutes to take off and put on but very safe when in place. Plan on having another one when we put in a pool here.

I would highly recommend the fence over the net. It's easy to get in and out for a simple family swim. You don't have to disassemble anything to have access to the pool, just simple open one of the gates provided (we had 3 gates). If you're children are running around in the backyard, they could still slip and fall on the net in the pool, which could be very cold during winter months and a little traumatic even with a net. If they stumbled around the pool with a fence, they would simple bounce off some mesh. Also, the fence can be taken down fairly easily for a large party, maybe 20 min. for the whole thing. We placed one of these around our pool when we had our twins and loved it. We had Superior pools put ours in and they are reasonable and quick. They do great work and we have them do all of our pool fixes.

I am with the other KatchaKid moms. We had one installed on our last pool and loved it! It only took a few minutes to take off/put on and what's a few minutes when your child is safe? It also made a great resale point when we sold out house! It is relatively attractive and they are quick and efficient to install for you! I think our was around $2000, but I know it depends on the size/shape of your pool and the color of the new you choose...

I have a katch a kid fence for the pool and the net for the spa (on the other side of the house). I was very happy with both. I chose the fence over the net for the pool area because I liked the idea of being able to use the pool during parties but still have the fence around it to keep the other kids out. We just made sure the fence was a couple feet out from the pool so the bigger kids could run around the pool and jump in with the fence up. If we had the net, we would have to chose to have a pool party where people could use the pool but then we'd have to be always worried the little ones would fall in or not take the net off. With the fence the big kids and adults could swim and the little ones are safe. I also hated the idea of having to take the net down and up just for a quick dip in the pool. Just something to consider.

My experience with pool nets is limited to one specific net over our friends' pool...and i would not recommend it. My 3 year old absolutely loves to be in water, we have to physically hold her back from running into a pool, pond, etc. She cannot swim so we are extra careful. So, regarding our friends' pool net...my daughter ran straight for the pool, and attempted to walk on the net or maybe she was trying to get through the net to the water (not sure which was her primary goal). Regardless, I wanted to see how "safe" the net could be. My daughter tangled her foot in net (it slipped right through one of the gaps in the net), and she couldn't safely position herself on the net and untangle herself. So...she is stuck, panicing, and the wieght of her body was dipping her down into the water. Ofcourse, my husband and i quickly untangled her and swooped her up and out of there. By the way...this all happened in the shallow end...less than a few inches from the step where my daughter had first stepped onto the net. Nonetheless, children can drown in very shallow water. From what i saw...it would be very easy for a child to get tangled in the net, and the weight of their body would dip them in the water, and depending how they were lying on the net...it could be fatal if the child is tangled and lying face down on the net and in the water.
Maybe there are better nets with much smaller gaps (so child's limbs can't get tangled) and tighter surface (so it won't dip into water) but the one we saw was dangerous.
I understand pool fences are pricey...but i think they are fully worth the peace of mind. I think it's also a good idea to have alarms on house doors accessing the pool so parents would know if their child was headed towards the pool.

We have a Katch A Kid net that we really like. It is easy to take off and on. I just called Katch a Kid and they came right out to speak with us and measure our pool. I think it took a week or so for them to actually make the custom net. Then the rep came out, installed it, and then showed my husband and I how to take it off/on.

The net sounds pretty neat- but wouldn't be a big hassle every time you wanted to swim? And how do you get it back on the pool while dealing with 2 little ones who are tired from swimming? My friends have a ice tall iron gated fence with a alarm on it and you can't possibly unlatch it if you are under 4 and a half feel tall. It makes swimming there easy and safe- no hassle every time.

I don't know if they are here in Dallas, but in Houston there is a company called Katch - A - Kid. They did the net for our pool. It is customized to fit your pool and I just love it! It's a little bit of a pain to hook up, but honestly no more than installing a car seat. My children are certainly worth the effort. Our daughters were 4 and 6 when we put the pool in and I had them out before we even filled it. I cannot tell you the piece of mind it gave us.
