Pool Fencing/safety Ideas Needed

My husband and I are considering options for a pool safety fence as our daughter gets a little older. We will most likely need something this fall as she'll be one in August. We don't want something that is unattractive but our main concern is our daughter's safety. Have any of you used the temporary fencing? How easy is it to put up, take down? How did it look? Is it expensive? Who offers it in the Denton/Corinth area? Any other ideas?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the help ladies. We'll be looking into Catch a Kid this summer and I'm still trying to find someone to teach the ISR techniques.

Along with fencing to keep children out of the pool I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend infant survival swimming course. You can check it out at http://www.infantswim.com/home.html it is absolutely amazing. I saw several children go thru it before I put my 12 month old thru it last summer. She learned to float on her back in 7 weeks. You can see videos and read testimony on the website but I would also send you my video if you wanted to see it. I believe it is truly life-saving and WELL WORTH the money! I encourage you to check it out! Best of luck to you!

You can always check with the local pool servicing companies to see what options they offer for security fencing. I would NOT let them talk me into "just a cover", though, as they can fail (and have).

Another option besides the fence is to put a sensor on any/all windows and doors that go to your backyard, so that it beeps (LOUDLY) when it is opened. You will want to make sure that you don't "tune out" when you hear it. Or you can put a "hotel room" security latch on your back door so your daughter can not open it wide enough to get out the door when you are not looking (we have 2 on our door into our kitchen, because it is a "double door" set, to keep our son out of the refrigerator!!) :)

As far as "expense" goes....I can not tell you how "cheap" a fence will sound after you have had to bury a child who drowned (sad to say, it happened to a very close friend of mine about 13 years ago, and they even had all the "right" security measures in place!). And I wouldn't wait for a "milestone event" to get the fence up ~ the sooner, the better.

Best Wishes, and Congratulations on your Baby Girl!

Hi we used Katch-a-kid fencing. We were very pleased with their service and the fence. It is a GREAT idea to fence in your pool. I have taken the fence down and put in up myself in just minutes. Let me know if you want more information.

We installed a temporary mesh pool fence about 4 1/2 years ago through Katch a Kid or it may be spelled Catch a Kid. It was around $800 at the time..but ours goes straight across the back yard since we have a large pool and not much grass. It is VERY easy to take down. I was not sure if we really needed one..I figured we could train the kids to not go out back or near the pool. It was our pediatrician who talked us into it...in his practice alone he has lost 9 year children to drowning in the past 25 years. And I happened to meet a family that lost a child to accidentally drowning..the toddler wandered outside by accident. I will never forget the pain in the family's faces.

So yes, it may be expensive, but it really is not a choice..you need to have a fence.

Good luck..we have been happy with ours!

Forget about what it looks like--you need a fence with a self-closing gate that is at least 5 feet tall. It needs to block off ALL access to the pool yard--doors and windows. Even if you get a temporary fence, don't plan on taking it down until your daughter (and any more children you might have)is grown.
Also invest in the other suggested items--a bolt latch on the top of the door, a door alarm, etc. This is called "layers" of protection. Believe me, this is the number one thing you should do to make your home safe--way more important than baby gates, plug covers and padding on the coffee table!
We also used Catch-a-Kid 6 years ago, and they were great about teaching us what is needed to keep our family safe!

Hi, I live in Corinth and I am not sure if BMR offers temporary fencing, but they are a good company that does good work for fencing and outdoor living areas. Their number is ###-###-####. I have to replace my entire fence since it blew down so I got several bids, and while they are not the cheapest, I think they do good quality work and the people are very nice. Worth a call. Good luck, L.
