Hi Mommies~

My husband and I are interested in talking with a marriage counselor. We love each other so much but definitely could benefit from having a third person to talk through some life challenges with. We are both Christian and would love that support however, are looking for a program that focuses mainly on our communication versus strengthening our relationship with God. Unfortunately, neither of us had strong models of solid communication in our childhood so I really think this would be beneficial for us. We are young and expecting our baby #2 in late February so money is VERY TIGHT! I hate that this has to be a barrier but for now it is our reality. If you have any great recommendations that would be wonderful...I just miss feeling connected to my husband so much! We live in the Lake Highlands Area...

What can I do next?

Hi, I completly understand your request! Althoug I'm not a marriage counselor,I wanted to suggest a few books.

My husband and I have read these books and recommend them to everyone we know! They have made a huge diffrnce in our marriage.

- The 5 Love languages, Personality Plus and the Friendship Factor.

Honestly, if you both agree to read thece books, you'll be set in my opinion. Also, don't just read them one time and that is it, my husband and I read those books at least once a year.

Go to www.christianbook.com and look up the titles, you'll be able to read a few pages before you buy the books.

My husband and I have had great success with Pam Abernathy at Roca Counseling. She is located at Walnut/Abrams, just north of 635 in Richardson. She has really helped us improve our communication skills which is definitely where we were lacking. She is very caring and helpful. She does take insurance which helped us out. Her number is ###-###-####.

Have you ever heard of Imago Therapy? It deals w/ communicating in structure - something my husband and I have been taught in the church, w/ a Christian counselor, and a non-Christian counselor.

There are only a few Imago Therapists in TX, and we've been to 3 of them. One was a quack, and the other two were wonderful!! I don't have their numbers, but you can certainly find them if you Google "Imago Counseling/Thereapy". One (my favorite: very wise, nation renown, does weekend seminars that are pricey but well worth it!; and he's a Christian) is Dr. McKeon. I believe he's in Justin or Rockwall. Second is Gay Jurgens. She doesn't base her therapy w/ Christianity, but we learned a ton on how to communicate. She's located off Inwood in Dallas, definitely closer to you.

Dr. Paul Bowles is located near 635 and Hillcrest. He is a former minister, and his counseling sessions reflect the general family oriented practice that you would associate with a minister. His counseling focuses on building and improving communication tools. I used him for premarital counseling and at least 3 friends have used him in the past decade and have been very pleased. I do not know what his current charges are, but I am sure he still takes insurance. Check with your health insurance administrator; often you qualify for some free assistance through your health insurance, although your selection of doctors may be limited as well as the number of visits.

Although this might be a bit of a drive for you, the church we attend (and have gone to counseling at) offers on-site counseling for marriage and family (as well as a host of other groups). I've listed the website below. You can tell the secretary there what type of counseling you are looking for and she can direct you to the appropriate counselor. Counseling is definitely NOT cheap, no matter where you go!! It is $75 per visit at our church. Most private practice firms charge about $100-$125 per session (1 hour). Our church is Lakepointe in Rockwall. It was important to us to work with a Christian counselor because we felt that our counselor would help us to follow the guidelines laid out in the Bible. I've been to other secular counselors before and have not been as satisfied (and paid a lot more money!) I hope this helps!
