Pink Eye??

This afternoon I noticed my 2 yr old's eye was a little red and watery and I thought maybe he had poked it or rubbed something in it. After his nap, he woke up with his eye very red, swollen, and with a yellowish discharge. I wiped it with a warm washcloth.
It seemed to get a little better but its still reddish and puffy. He is not rubbing it or acts uncomfortable but his eye definitely looks infected.
He has not been around other children today or this weekend so I have no idea how he caught this. Should I take him to his Dr first thing tomorrow or is this something that will clear up on its own?

What can I do next?

You have great advice. Taking him to the doctor is necessary. I just wanted to add that every time you touch him or play with him, wash your hands. Make everyone wash their hands often. Also, wash everything he plays with before any one else touches it. My daughter had this once and with all our handwashing, no one else in the house got it. Anyway, hope that helps.

My son & I have gotten pink eye several times in the past year. I don't know anyone else who is getting it. We may just be getting it from a grocery cart for all I know.

It sounds like pink eye to me. Always take a suspected case of pink eye to the doc. It is highly contagious, & it will worsen if it's not taken care of. You NEVER want to mess with your eyes. If you have an infection, get it taken care of immediately!! It will NOT clear up on its own.

Good luck!!

I agree that it is probably pink eye and you should get him to the doctor. As for how he got it, he does not have to of been around anyone that has pink eye. There are several causes of pink eye. It could be caused from allergies. The term pink eye or conjuctivitis is a broad diagnosis meaning only that the conjunctiva (white) of the eye is infected. My son got pink eye twice when he was 14 months to 19 months. Both times he had not been exposed to anyone who had ever even had pink eye (I'm a stay at home mom.) His strain was caused from allergies. Goodness knows that with all the stuff in the air, that is a definite possibility with your son's case. I am including a website for you to read more about pink eye and it's various strains and causes. http://www.medicinenet.com/pink_eye/article.htm

Hope this helps.

Sounds like pink eye to me. You will need to see the Dr. You need to make sure he is washing hands frequently as it is VERY contagious and I would wash his sheets/pillowcases. He is considered contagious until 24 hours after you begin the treatment.

Hi Alexandra,
If it's pink eye, it will be very gunky & crusty in the morning
with a green or yellow discharge.
If he still has it in the morning, definitely get him into the pedi. Pink eye is SO contagious and you don't want your other children or you to catch it.

Good luck and hope he gets better soon!

Definitely sounds like pink eye and it could spread to his other eye. I had pink eye a few years ago and contracted it in both eyes..no fun!! My physician gave me some eye drops and though it stung, I improved almost immediately. I have heard that once you start using the medicated drops you are not contagious anymore but I would get a professional opinion on that.

As for where he got it, probably from a store cart when you were shopping...stores do not really sanitize those things anymore.

I would take him today if possible. Pink eye is EXTREMELY contagious and painful! If you wait til morning he may wake up with his eye glued shut from all the discharge overnight. My older daughter had pink eye for 3 months...at least that's what we were told .... when she was 2. Turned out she had obstructed tear ducts. Definitely take him to the Dr!
