PET Vaccinations

Our dog Grady is due for his shots. We don't board him so we are thinking to not do the Bordatella shot done.

Fellow dog owners - if you don't board your dog - do you get this shot? The vet said it was optional if we didn't board and if we needed to board him we could have it administered.

he has play dates with other dogs, however, we haven't taken him to dog parks or doggie day care.

The shot isn't expensive - but wondering if he REALLY needs it. Would you give your dog a shot that he MIGHT NOT need?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Grady interacts with other dogs...the dogs that he "hangs" with - are usually NOT boarded either.

If he has play dates with other dogs I would definitely get the vaccine. You never know who the other dogs are exposed to. Plus like you said, it's an inexpensive vaccine. From what I know, it has to be given every 6 months though. When my vet gives it to my dogs it's a spray mist that goes in their nostrils, lol, not a shot.

Bordatella vaccine is advised in any situation where multiple dogs are coming and going, and encountering each other in a relatively enclosed space - i.e. boarding kennel, groomer, etc.

From what you describe, his risk of being exposed to "kennel cough" is relatively low so it is up to you. He could still get it, even playing with a dog that maybe is not showing symptoms yet, but it's not likely so it's probably safe to skip it. It's not typically life-threatening (sometimes very young puppies or very old dogs end up with pneumonia) - just causes a hoarse cough that requires antibiotics to clear up. I tend to recommend certain vaccines based on the dog's lifestyle, exposure risk, and how serious of a disease it is if they do catch it.

I used to work at a vet, and in your situation...it's not necessary. I assume your pup has play dates outdoors? The vaccination is meant for inclosed places, and where dogs are actually kept, rather then simply playing. There is always a risk, but yours is so minimal. It's very difficult for a dog to catch it outdoors. If you take your dog to a groomer, I recommend it.

Our dog has never had the Bordatella shot (she's 9).
We never board her.
The only other dog she is ever around is her brother (my mom owns).
Hopefully DVMmom will chime in if the playdates are an issue. :)

yes, I do, I don't get it EVERY time but I do get it. ESPECIALLY if they are going to be in contact with other dogs or take them to the groomer. That's one of the ones they have to have if we take them to the groomer. Kennel cough is pretty nasty.
For our vet it's an intra nasal drip thing, not a shot.

I stopped giving my dogs that shot when I no longer boarded or showed my dogs.

My vet said there was no reason to give them the shot unless they are going to be boarded or around dogs that may not be vaccinated and in boarding situations.

Kennel cough is easily spread from animal to animal - regardless if they are being boarded or not. If you have dog playdates, I'd get the shot.

Honestly I don't think you need it. I have a 10 month old puppy and I got his puppy shots and his rabies, no bordatella though.
Bordatella prevents kennel cough but if he were to contract it from somewhere, it is easily treated with an antibiotic.
If vets don't say you need it then I see no reason to get it done.

I worked at a vet. Most people do not get the bordatella vaccine/spray if they don't board or go to groomers or go to dog parks.. if your dog is like mine, and doesn't interact with other dogs, than you really don't need it.
