My 7 month old female yorkie poo was spayed on last monday and she had staretd coughing this week, we took her to the vet on yesterday and he gave her antibiodics and cough medicine but she is coughing like crazy, it sounds like she can't breath or something. Last night i jumped up out of the bed because i thought she couldn't breath, this is new to me but it seems soooo bad. Anyone knows of anything to get rid of it? Dr. Says her throat is irritated from the tube from her surgery, yes she has all her shots etc..i am still worried about her so i was wondering if anyone else may have had this problem and found a solution. The cough has gotten worse not better its constant now. I feel so helpless, she so tiny 3lbs but she still plays and all but i don't want her to be coughing forever, any ideas please share with me.
Thanks in advance

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I wanted to let everyone know how the puppy was doing. She is doing soooooo much better these last 3 days and i'm so happy she has stopped that awful cough it was loud and it so sounded like she was literally coughing up a lung or some organ. But I do like my vet and they have been very good to us but i was just wondering if anyone else had the same issue. I will say the first thing came to mind was the Kennel Cough and i knew that wasn't good. But she has stopped the coughing and i read that it can come back off and on but i hope it stays away. She's back to her normal playful self. She is still taking her cough medicine and antibiodics also. Saturday the dr. says they will remove her stitches from the surgery so I'll have a few more questions for him on saturday when we return but i do want to thank all of you so much you have helped me more than you. You really put me at ease because i was very worried even though i took her to the dr. it was still hearing her and seeing her that way. Thanks moms without you i may have worried my dr's office to death, hahahah Thanks again.

I have a small puppy, nearly 10 yrs. old, and he has had a cough on and off for all his life. It started right after his first set of shots. I found out the Kennel Cough shot can cause this in some dogs that may be sensitive to it. The vet gave me antibiotics for him. For many yrs I refused to get him another of those shots. It is mainly for dogs that are around other dogs or boarded and such. I kept him with me and the coughing was almost gone. When he does cough, I give him soft things,to sooth his throat. cottage cheese, creamy peanut butter. Vet approved. seems to help.
They may have scratched her tiny throat, maybe they should run free test to see inside,ex ray, or what ever. They did it, and should fix it .

If you decide you need a second opinion, Dr. Hickman of Animal Medical Center in McKinney specializes in Yorkies. We have taken 3 of our Yorkies to him and only him. He is great, understands the teeny tiny breeds and their special needs.

It is true that her throat can be irritated from the tracheal tube, but they can also get a tear if the cuff was over inflated. I would have a second opinion. Maybe from a specialty clinic with a scope. I hope she's ok. MN

We adopted our new puppy from the shelter and within a week both her and one of my other dogs started with Kennel Cough...sounds like a goose honking and then trying to cough something out. Since there is no fever, no loss of energy, none of the triggers that it has now become pneumatic, we are treating them at home right now with a DM cough syrup Demsyl (sp.) no alcohol. It lasts six to ten days so we are near the end of it right now. This is a virus not bacterial so antibiotics only help if it has become pneumonia, which is an infection.

Always check with your vet first before administering anything over the counter as many human medicines are not good for pets.

I'm glad your baby is doing fine! We have a Yorkie as well...he snuffs up tons of stuff and has the nickname of "Hoover"! He has allergies and sneezes a lot but healthy like the others.

If you like your doctor, there is no need to change. I absolutely love our vet, Dr. Campbell at VCA Buckingham. We had to do outpatient treatment for a week after someone poisoned our pit with antifreeze. The staff is wonderful and I can't recommend them highly enough.

I have 4 dogs. At some point they have all done this. They cough, and then make what I describe as a sucking sound as though they can't breathe. I usually give them a Benedryl and that stops it. Dogs have allergies just like people do.

If her throat is irritated, it will take a little while. Give her ice chips with her water and put a little veg or olive oil on her food so that it helps it to go down better. She will be ok... If you don't trust what your vet is say, get a second opinion.

It could be kennel cough that she picked up at the vet's office. It is highly contagious!

Sounds like Kennel Cough, our dog has it although the vet always says "she's fine". She is nine and we still see it flare up from time to time. We have lived with it, and you may see, like us, that the symptoms will come and go over the years. Here is wikipedia's link:

If you don't think your vet is accurately diagnosing her, get a second opinion. Otherwise, if she is playing normally, she should recover. Be sure to give her all of her medicine. Good luck!
