Pet Urine Smells in Carpet

Background: I am living in what used to be my inlaws house. They had a Pom-Poo who would poo & pee in the dining room whenever she was mad at my inlaws. The carpets were not cleaned before we moved in.
I have a female & male dog. To add to the mix, we have a male cat. The male dog and cat are not fixed (altho the day is soon coming!!!). If I forget to block off the dining room the dog will go poo & pee in there. I also now have to block off the hallway to my kids rooms b/c if the dinig is blocked that's the dog's new mark.
I believe that there is a territory thing going on.
We just rented a carpet cleaner last weekend and the whole house smelled awesome! Fresh & clean smelling! Then it dried and back to pee & amonia.

I have also heard that once a male cat starts spraying, it doesn't matter if he's clipped or not. Is that true?

I have company coming for Thanksgiving and I can't get the dog pee/cat amonia smell out of the kitchen/dining.
As much as I'd like to, we can't take the carpet out b/c we haven't bought the house yet so the inlaws won't let us until we have something to replace the carpet with.

What can I do next?

Honestly, with the problem you have sounds super serious. I don't think cleaning is going to do the job. If you are planning on buying the house, I would go ahead and rip up the carpet and put a throw rug down until you can afford to replace the carpet. At this point, if it is as bad as you say it is, the smell/liquid is not just in the carpet, it has soaked down into the padding as well.

What kind of inlaws would not let you rip out that carpet. The hell with them. Rip out that carpet. Leave it bare if you have to. You cant have people over with horrible pee smell...thats just crazy! What will they do if you pull the carpet out??? you and your kids health comes first.

We had 4 cats and as the male got older he started using the carpet even though he was neutered. The vet said it was old age. We bought "Urine be gone" at bed bath and beyond and it seemed to work for us. Spray the area you think is the "bad" spot and then it has a black light you can find the exact spot and take care of it. I home depot has this product too. But it is VERY important to get him nuetered soon, it WILL get worse.

If you wait too late to fix your male cat they will spray the rest of their lives. I have two that do that. I got a spray bottle of water and everytime I catch them I spray them with water. They have almost stopped spraying now but not completely.

I had to take the carpet out of my house. I now have laminate flooring but if you are not careful about cleaning up immediately, the urine ruins it. I have had to replace a couple of boards already.

It is a real problem to get pet smells out. I found that Renuzit has an excellent spray for carpets, etc. It is similar to Fabreze but in my opinion works better.

Hope this helps.

The only thing I have found that truly works is Nature's Miracle. It actually gets the smell out. You can get it in gallon jugs at Petsmart. Not cheap but much cheaper than new carpet. Make sure you really saturate the problem areas and then make sure you get the males fixed. Getting them fixed should solve the problem but if it goes on for too long that ma not help either. I also recommend getting some Feliway diffusers (for the cat I think there is a similar product for dogs). That gives off feramones that calm the animals and make them less likely to spray. Hope it works for you.

The problem is in the pad and in the slab. When you do rip out the carpet you will probably need to have the slab sealed. I cleaned mine with bleach repeatedly first and it still wasn't enough in one room. I had to seal the slab. Keep the room blocked off at all times...at least the problem won't get any worse until you get it all taken care of.

My cat was not fixed for a long time and he did really well until we moved where there were previous pets...he sprayed on everything...even my clothes...and I had him fixed. He never sprayed again after that and he was about 3 at the time.

We tried everything on the carpet but nothting worked. On my couches I used a combo of lemon juice and vinegar and it worked wonders...we were sure we were going to have to get new ones but we are now all clear.

Good luck...maybe you can pull the carpet up with the promise of new carpet it he very near future and just leave the slab? At least you can bleach that for temprorary relief!

Good morning J.:
It is not true that all male cats will continue spraying after they are fixed. It is important though that you get him fixed as soon as possible! The sooner the better! I have four cats, three of which are male. One of them started spraying off and on for quite a long time and one of the other started doing for a short time before I got him neutered. Now NONE of them spray and never did do it again. So,with that said I will give you another tip on cleaning your carpets. One of the best things to get the smell out is White Vineger. Go rent a carpet cleaner again and mix hot water with white vineger. Vineger litterally dissolves the ammonia enzymes in the urine. Now besides the fact vineger does stink as well but that smell does go away. If you do not have time to do all that this week with the holiday coming, just get yourself one or two boxes of Arm and Hammer baking soda and generously sprinkle that all over your carpets. Then walk on it to grind it into the carpet and let it sit for a day or two. Then just vacuum up. For vacuum bags (if you your vacumm uses bags) also purchase Arm & Hammer pet odor elimator bags, they work really well! Try these and see how it all works for you.

I use solumel...it works GREAT and is safe for children and pets. I've used it on pee stains, vomit, red wine, hot wing sauce, medicine, mud, coke, etc. It has taken it all out...plus the smell is gone.

Good luck!

SATURATE the area with Nature's Miracle or a simular product. These use enzymes to neutralize the smell. You have to use A LOT b/c it has to get down where the pee/poop went to. You can find it at Petsmart or Petco.

When my husband and I bought our home a few years ago, we used one of those carpet cleaning things we rented from the grocery store and had the same problem you did. The only way we got rid of the smell was to buy liquid pet odor remover in a large jug from the store (I don't remember the name of the product) and poured it over the smelly spots. We poured quite a bit and then re-smelled the area 24 hours later after it had dried. We retreated the area a couple of times until we couldn't smell it anymore. We haven't had any smell issues since then. This method works great if the smell has soaked into the padding under the carpet, which is very plausible in your case.
