Periods After Giving Birth

Hi everyone,
I've had about 5 periods now since I gave birth 10 months ago, and each one is really heavy, though getting better. My problem is though that with every period I get I feel like my bottom is going to fall out. I know it sounds weird, but it just feels really heavy down there, like something is pushing down... almost like I felt the day after I pushed my son out :) I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced anything like this. Should I see the doctor, or is this completely normal? I hope I explained it well enough, I don't really know how else to describe this.
Thank you!

What can I do next?

I have two children (3 1/2 and 1) and my periods are worse than ever. I also have pelvic floor prolapse and have gone to therapy. Did your doctor ever mention anything at your 6 week checkup like he could see your bladder?? Mine did and hence it is still out of place. I have learned lots, gone through therapy and talk with my OB about surgery since I leak all the time. If you want more info, just let me know!! Kegels can help but honestly you need something more intense than just a few kegels here and there.

I completely understand what you are talking about. I had the same feeling for a long time after each of my children and I still feel that way sometimes. I think it is normal but if you are concerned you could ask your doctor.

I've had that too since my last son was born. I never had it checked out, but was going to ask about it next week to my midwife (I'm pregnant again now). I was thinking it might be a varicose vein/hemorrhoid down there or something. :-( You should probably have the doctor check it out though, just to give you peace of mind and make sure it's nothing serious or maybe to find out how to help it!

If it hurts, I'd ask the doctor, but it sounds familiar and I think probably a lot of people went through some of this. I agree with the fact that if you do some kegel exercises it might tighten things up inside.

Z. - it's possible that your pelvic floor muscles are weak and the ligaments that hold your uterus in place are stretched. Both are affected by pregnancy. Kegel excersizes will tone your pelvic floor muscles. I'm not sure if you can do anything for stretched or weak ligaments.

I would mention it to your doctor the next time you see him/her. These problems get worse with age and are hereditary, so if you can ask your mom or your grandmas about it, they might be able to shed some light on the subject.

I think I understand the feeling you are describing. Since the birth of my 2 kids (both were over 10 pounds) my uterus has dropped, and I have the sensation that everything is lower than before. If I do a kegal exercise, then I feel like everything is where it should be. I was told by my doctor that this is a disorder with my pelvic floor. Maybe ask your ob/gyn about it at your next visit?

Your pelvic floor sounds like it is very weak. If you don't bring in your transverse abdominus muscle while you doing any kind of work (picking up kids, items, etc) exercise, or even sneezing when you are pregnant, the forward forceful pressure of the uterus and the forward forceful motion of those things causes ligament laxity. This causes the ligaments in the uterus which hold you bowel and bladder to drop and hang lower. The ligaments are not elastic and do not come up on their own, they are more like silly putty.

You must do proper kegels, specialized kegels, and look into purchasing a gynaflex. This will strengten your pelvic floor.

If you have any questions please contact me, as I am a certified maternal fitness specilist and trainer. I do group and personal sessions concentrating on the pelvic floor and transverse abdominus.
