Perfume for Sensitive Nosed Person

Hi moms,

I don't wear perfume because most of the ones I've tried are so overpowering to me - the scent seems to go to the back of my throat. I'm not allergic, but I think I'm just sensitive. Coffee does the same thing.

I started using a new hair care product that has a very pleasant scent. My hubby remarked that he wouldn't mind if I wore perfume sometimes. I wouldn't mind either if I could find something that didn't bug me. I'm wondering if I need to avoid spray perfumes altogether.

Are there any scented products out there that are subtle, not lotions or sprays, and reasonably priced? Thanks!

What can I do next?

I get sick when I smell just about every perfume on the market, especially the cheap ones. But NOT Chanel #5. I have an expensive nose.

As a person with pretty severe chemical sensitivities, I'm always grateful to be in a public place where nobody is scented. I'm driven out of places when people come in wearing perfume (including leaving committee meetings, movies, and restaurants in the middle of my meal). I can be too sick to sleep for a couple of days after a bad exposure, because I get central apnea, which requires that I be awake to breathe.

A recent study suggested that at least one out of 20 people suffer from some degree of sensitivity, so you're not alone. I hope you find a scent that you can tolerate. And I hope you will use in extreme moderation for the sake of those in the world who get sick from perfume (many of them are children).

I absolutely LOVE the Pacifica Perfumes line. They are all natural, no chemicals, environmentally friendly and not overbearing at all. I hate perfume in general, but I love these. I use the solid perfume in a little tin, so I can have just a tiny hint of fragrance. They make sprays, solids, and roll-ons. They also make wonderful candles and bath products. Everything is inexpensive. My current favorite is Brazilian Mango Grapefruit, and Tibetan Temple. And my nose is extremely sensitive too.

I have a child who has been clinically tested to be allergic to artificial fragrances. He doesn't react to Chanel products. It can last a long time, if you only wear it a couple of times a week. I'm on my second bottle in about eight years.

Also, heath food stores have small bottles of essential oils that are usually derived directly from the source of the scent (e.g. flower). A tiny little dab is all you need, and it can also be added to some unscented products.

His allergy is really a sensitivity to petroleum by-products, which are used in most fragrances. The cheaper fragrances are the worst, but sometimes expensive ones have it, too.

I tend to be annoyed by purfume sometimes and what I do when I spray it on is I stand by the front door as I am going to walk out and spray infront of me and walk out... it tends to help b/c I am going straight into fresh air. I really do like clinique's happy heart it is light and airy.

Try some of the oils. My favorite is Skin Musk. One teeny bottle lasts a very long time.

I like Elizabeth Arden's Green Tea. It's very light. My husband is not a big fan of perfume...he says he can "taste" it. When I found Green Tea he really liked it.

I have reactionary asthma so wearing fragrance can be tricky.

I usually avoid using sprays as they take too long to settle down. I wear lotions and body powders. I usually put the lotion on my upper thighs and whatever is left over on my hands I rub on my arms. The powder I use on my torso.

This lets me wear fragrance without triggering the asthma.

If I really want to wear the spray I'll spray a cotton ball or qtip first and apply it to my wrists and behind my earlobes. This way I'm getting the fragrance without actually dousing myself in it.

Subtle is all a matter of taste. I wear Elizabeth Arden's Pretty and Lancome's Tresor and Magie Noire.

I have allergies and am sensitive to almost every perfume I have tried. I often like the scent but within minutes end up w/ a headache. Smelling it all day is unbearable. I recently found one that isn't that way. Have you ever tried Mystique?
