Pelvic Pain - Lafayette, CA

I had a c-section 2 years ago with my daughter and am pregnant again. It is really early (4 weeks, 3 days) and I've been having some sharp twinges of pain in my lower abdomen, particularly on the right. It hurts when I lay flat on my back and cough and it hurt today when I tried to get up from lying on the couch. It doesn't last very long and it doesn't hurt if I push on my abdomen. I'm wondering if the pain is scar tissue stretching from adhesions? Has anyone else had this problem? I'm worried it could be an ectopic... Thanks!

I've had the exact same pains you are describing. They've come and gone with my second pregnancy (also had a c-section with the first)-I'm now 6 months along. I don't think it has to do with the c-section because I had them during my first pregnancy as well. I just assumed they were a stretching/growing/blood flow issue.

Hi J.!

I feel your pain, and have felt it literally. I was prego with twins last year and could barely walk from the same kinda pain. I had a c-section with my first as well.

I bet if you mention this to your doctor, they will agree that this pain is normal pain. They also might speed you up and get you an ultrasound sooner. They should be able to tell right now if it's ectopic or not, even though it's early. Don't stress, and TAKE IT EASY! Trust me I know with a toddler that's easier said than done. Ask for help, and rest!

Happy Pregnancy!

Call your doctor. Even if is nothing..you need to be able to call your doctor.
Also, lie on your left side during pregnancy.

I have had c sections...

I know exactly how it feels. I had a c-section and I was told that it is scar tissue that causes that pain, when I cough or lay wrong. It doesn't last very long but it does hurt to an extent. Kind of feels like a pulled muscle or spasm for about 30 to 40 seconds. My son just turned 20 on July 12 '09 and I still have it. I think thats what it is and not ectopic for you too. But to rest your mind go have it checked out.

Hi,

I had a c-section 5 years ago...and last summer I had an etopic pregnancy which I had to have one of my tubes removed. I am now 15 weeks along and I do have the same pain you are describing with this pregnancy. Because of the etopic and the c-section I have scar tissue that is causing the pain. If you are worried about an etopic then please call your doctor to have an ultrasound just to make sure. I was between 6-10 weeks before they found the etopic. It's a very painful experience the longer you wait plus it's very dangerous for you if it burst.

Sounds like it might be round ligament pain from the hormone relaxin - most books and websites say you don't get this pain until a little later in your pregnancy but it was the first sign I noticed (around 3-5 weeks) in both of my pregnancies. It bothers me most when getting up from lying on my back.

I don't know if this is what u have, but it's related to pelvic pain during pregnancy, it's called pubic symphysis separation.

Hello,

Chances are it's your round ligament stretching. The round ligament is one of the supporting ligaments for the uterus. It doesn't stretch very well and tend to get start to get stretched at the beginning of a pregnancy and can REALLY hurt! (some women actually think they might be miscarrying instead of ligament stretching!) Since it hurts most when you cough and are trying to get up, etc...it makes the most sense that it's the culprit for your pain.
