Pees So Much at Night`

My 16 month old son pees so much during the night and when he wakes after sleeping for 12 hours straight, his diaper just can't hold anymore and always begins to leak to his pajamas which makes me have to constantly change his pj's every morning. We use Pampers and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on how to stop this from happening. Someone could be a millionaire for inventing a diaper for nighttime!

What can I do next?

Hi, I have also had the "pee" problem at night time. I have two children (ages 4 and 2) and my 2 year old son still has the issue of soaking through everything at night.
I use the Huggies overnight diaper underneath a swim diaper every single night. You can use either the pampers or huggies swim diaper. Wearing both diapers seems to keep him from soaking through to his pjs, and the sheets/blankets underneath him. The swim diaper is just an added layer that seems to hold everything in! Good luck!!!

Hi, I haven't had a chance to read the other replies but my recommendation would be to use the next size up at night. My son used to leak too at night and once I started using the next larger size at night, it really helped contain everything.

Huggies work much better than Pampers for boys. Try them. My daughter did better with Pampers. My son is 23 months old and still wakes up every morning without a leak.

Try Huggies Overnights. Both of my girls wear them and we've never had a problem with leaks. Good luck.

2 suggestions:
1. Use a larger sized diaper
2. Limit what he drinks for the hour or so before bedtime. If you still nurse him, do it before his bath etc. If he has a bedtime bottle, you can decrease the amount by 1 oz per day until you've eliminated that. If he drinks his bathwater (my son always did) you can just get him to stop that. I found that this REALLY helped.

In addition to trying to cut down on drinks right before bedtime, you can also change the diaper right before bedtime. Can you also check on him after 5-7 hours and change it really quickly or would he wake up? My son can be changed (pull up) as he sleeps with no problem. The pull ups work wonders.

JB,

I had the exact same problem with my son. Although he normally wears Pampers I started using Huggies Overnight diapes just before he goes to bed, and they work like a charm! He has never had wet pajamas or a wet bed since I started using those at nighttime, and my son tends to drink a lot of water. Even if you are not a fan of Huggies they are the only brand that I know of that has a diaper especially designed for overnight. I will even use those during the day if we are going somewhere where I know it will be difficult to change him as often as he needs. They hold what seems like gallons without ever leaking. Give them a try I know you will be very pleased as I was!

My 17 month old has the same problem. I recently found Huggies Nightime diapers at WalMart. They seem to be doing better. We haven't had wet PJs since using these.

We had the same problem starting around that age. Huggies makes an overnight diaper. They work great! Amazing how much they can hold.

We went through the same thing. We use Pampers during the day, but for night time we use Huggies Overnights (one size bigger than he uses during the day) and we also use this thing called Diaper Doublers. They look just like maxi pads for women, but they work. You just put them inside the diaper and it just adds another layer of protection. I was ordering them online, but I found that Toys R Us sells them now. It sounds weird, but they work and they save your pjs and sheets! Hope this helps!

I am starting to have the same issue my daughter, but she is only 12m. So, I use a diaper one size bigger for the nights. It does seem to be helping. I did use the Huggies overnights with my son around 18 months and they were great.
Thanks for the tips on the diaper doubler, I thought there would be such a product but didn't know where I'd find it locally.

12 hours! Boy, you're lucky! I don't know too many diapers that will hold for that long, but I switched to Huggies Supreme from Luvs or Pampers at nite, as my 16 month old had wet jammies after 8 hours. Good luck!

You can get a product called diaper doublers and stick it in his diaper at night. This worked for my kids. I know you can get it at Dominicks.

I used the bedwetting pull-up underwear. You might have to trim it to make it fit but they at least held. Cut back on the drinks two hours before bedtime too.

Have you heard of Diaper Doublers? They are a pad that goes inside the diaper and really work great. I also use diapers that are one size larger. (Except now that he wears a 6 I can't do that anymore and he still stays dry.) We rarely have leaks now. They are sold at Dominick's and made by Safeway in the diaper aisle. We have been using these for almost 2 years with my son! Much better than changing his sheets every morning!

I haven't had to do this, but heard about it and suggested it to my friend who had the same problem with her daughter....your sons daddy may not like the idea, but my friend swears it works:

add a maxipad to the top of the diaper - stick it sideways at the top and it will stop leakage.....she sleeps on her tummy which is why sticking it at the top works........

Good luck - so far, in our case, our son is good with Pampers Cruisers, but I've also heard going a size up works - you may have tried that already, but if not, give it a shot.

My son used to do that all the time. He goes to bed before me so right before I go to bed I will change him and that does seem to help. He doesn't soak through as much as he used to. I hope that this helps.

Have you ever tried "Diaper Doublers" They are kind of like a maxi pads with no lining, just tuck them inside the diapers and they help soak up. They seemed to help my little guy stay dry. I found them at Dominicks.

First, congrats on the new baby! And 16 months apart - WOW! :) Mine are 18 months apart.

Anyway, we have the same problem here. My 2 year old is still peeing through most nights. I switched to Huggies Overnights for nighttime and it helps, but hasn't solved the problem. I also don't offer beverages after 5. If he asks, I'll give it to him, but I don't leave sippy cups around. I also will only give him water because he'll drink it slower (he guzzles milk). I just recently started giving him milk in a regular cup for dinner so he'd drink slower (and take less). It has helped with the pure soakers, but he'll still wake up a little wet around the waistband.

I've also tried double diapering him and it didn't work. I have a friend who's daughter does the same thing and she tried the cloth diaper inserts and plastic pants over the diaper. I think she ended up with 2 diaper inserts, a nighttime diaper and plastic pants over them and she'll still have a little moisture at the waistband.

So I say start with the Huggies Overnights and go from there. Its frustrating having to change sheets, jammies, bathe or sponge bath every single morning...especially if you are dealing with a newborn at the same time. Good luck!
