Peanuts - When Can Kids Eat 'Em?

This might seem like a silly question...But at what age can toddlers eat peanuts & other nuts? Everything I hear says wait until they're well over 2 years old because eating peanuts too early can cause allergies. Yet in a lot of cookbooks & meal planning books for kids it lists peanut butter sandwiches as options for lunch after the child is one year old.
Thanks for your help!

I did not feed my son peanuts until he was in second year of preschool and completely on solids.
Rule of thumbs. If they can peel them open then they are probably ready to eat them.
Hope that helps.

I would wait until 3 years of age. I allowed my first child to have it after he was 1 years old. No issues with him. I tried with my second child when he was 12 months. He had an anaphylactic reaction. We did not know that we even had food allergies in our families. I wish I knew then what I know now.

Keep in mind, you cannot have an anaphylacic reaction the first time you eat it. What I did not know, I had desensitized him while I was breastfeeding. I was eating peanuts and PB&J sandwiches. That is why when I gave him less than 1/8 tsp of peanut butter to taste, he reacted severely.

I have since undergone allergy testing and I am allergic to most foods and after much research there are life threatening allergies on my husbands side of the family.

My kids have been eating peanut butter since about 7 months. However we have no food allergies in or family and my pediatrician said this was fine. I only put a tiny bit on at first because it can be hard to swallow. My 3 year old eat peanut butter sandwiches a few times a week and my 1 year old isn't fond of it, but I still offer it to her once in awhile. I would check with your pediatrician. Good luck!

I recently researched this in response to a question about what causes peanut allergies.
I found that introduction to peanuts (in lotions and creams, in foods and even soy formula) before the age of 3 is a contributing factor in the development of severe peanut allergies later.

Google "causes peanut allergy" to see why. :)

According to Baby Center... the recommendation if after 1 year or 2 years old, I can't remember. But, for both my children, I waited until after 2 yrs. You can also try checking out the American Academy of Pediatrics and see what they say and ask your Pediatrician.

My daughter has been eating peanut butter since she was about 13 months old. Peanuts themselves are a choking hazard, that is why you are supposed to hold off on them. I think you are ok to give pb to your child as long as peanut allergies do not run in your family but check w/ your pediatrican to be sure. BTW, if you do introduce your son to pb, spread it thin so it's not too sticky for him to swallow.

WIC- says that your not allowed to give toddlers peanuts or peanut butter till they are 3 yrs of age. However, my son has been eating it since he was 1yr. Just as with any new food you introduce your child to you have to watch to make sure he's not allergic. I don't know how they figure that peanut butter causes allergies to start, but I'm sure in the end it's up to you as to when you want to introduce it to his diet.

They aren't supposed to eat anything that is a choking hazard until the age of 4, which inlcudes grapes, hot dogs, popcorn, and nuts. :)
