I was wondering if any of you have children or know of someone who has a child that has been diagnosed with a paralized diaphram? My 5 1/2 year old daughter was just diagnosed with this on her left side. She was born prematurely at 26 wks 1 day and has several other medical conditions. I am worried about what types of treatments they have for this condition. She has been hospitalized several times with recurrent pneumonia and has had surgery for omphalocele repair at 14 months of age. She had very little lung capacity at birth from being on a ventilator (2 months) and the surgery from the omphalocele repair put alot of strain on her lungs and she again needed to be on the ventilator for another 2 1/2 weeks. Any help or information would be greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

I have a friend that is 50, and was recently down with pneumonia. She was still having problems after getting out of the hospital and went back to the doctor. This is what she was told she had, a paralized diaphram. She said they told her sometimes it gets back to full function on its own, with rest, and sometimes it does not. Your best imformation will come from your doctor or a doctor that deals with the lungs or diaphram. My friend seems better, just short winded.

Good Luck Let us know what you find out.

I'm responding a bit late to this...I was cleaning out my email and came across it. I don't actually have advice but just wanted to add my support and prayers for you and your precious girl. My little boy was born with a giant omphalocele and heart defects in 1998 and passed away from complications at 9 1/2 months. So I know about the ventilator and lung complications. Wow...you are a single mom. Bless you that you are doing this on your own. I hope you have support from family and friends. By the way, I have 4 living and very healthy kids now. God bless and I hope things start looking up for you both.

I did know a little girl with a partially paralyzed diaphragm. Her bigger problem though was a brachial plexus injury to her arm (happened at the same time...injured nerves are near the diapragm nerve. I think they were going to a children's hospital in Texas (from North Carolina) and looking into nerve transplants. She was getting lots of physical and occupational therapy. Hopefully your daughter is too. God bless you both!

I don't really know anything about this, but I do know that the diaphragm is the muscle that helps you breathe. Your little one is in a tough situation with a lowered lung capacity and now this problem. Good luck to both of you, and I will keep you in my prayers. D.
