My living room room walls are beige/tan. The accents are maroon, the furniture black. I have a shelving unit I want to repaint and bring in. It's 4 ft tall and probably 5 to 6 ft wide. It's big and will take up a lot of wall space. I am going to paint the unit black, but it's deep and wide and alot of my stuff is black. It will swallow my stuff, rather than display it. I want to paint the board behind the shelves a light color that will allow my items to stand out. What is a light paint color that will coordinate with the beige, tan, and black? I was thinking a light sage green or maybe the palest yellow. White would be too white. I can't think of anything in the maroon family that wouldn't just look pink. Looking for a not matching, but coordinating, accent color that will make my stuff pop. Stuff like colored glass onjects, candles, picture frames, random statues of Ganesh, Buddha, keepsakes from the kids, and tons of books.
maroon shelf...ooohhh new idea! I will definately have to give that some serious thought. I think I love it. Am I that bold though?
what about painting the unit the same maroon accent color as the rest of the room with a lighter color color behind the shelves?

What about a rich gold or deep yellow? We have recently painted an entryway a color by Benjamin Moore called "Cornhusk." It's bright but rich and doesn't knock your eye out.
Sage green would be pretty, but I have a tough time choosing the right shade of green. I'd be worried about a color that looked too minty against the black.
You could also consider going a shade or two darker than your wall color...?
I think a pale blue! Will set off those darker colors really nicely. I also like yellow or gray.
on the inside of a couple of the shelves, could you do some type of translucent color .. for the shelves that house the Ganesh and Buddha statues.. it could look like a beautiful shrine in those specific spots, if tastefully done. you could do a softer color underneath and then the translucent over the top.. like a sheer silver.. again, it would have to be done tastefully.. that could really add some dimension and if too, if the light were on it at times, could illuminate the statues..

I second a light shade of green. We went from white to light green in our living room and we love it, it adds just enough color without being overwhelming. It seems to match everything well, I like to change the colors of my curtains a few times a year (burgandy, beige and floral) and the green coordinates well with all of it.
I was also going to sage a pale, minty sage green, or even a chartreuse. It compliments maroon very well. We had a maroon couch and went the soft yellow and golden yellow route... big mistake! We later had that same couch in a home with the sage walls, very peaceful, calming feeling and the colors paired very well with each other.

I would probably go with the beige, tan, taupe family of colors for the entire unit. It wouldn't clash with the wall color, your furniture color or accent color of maroon while still allowing your treasures to stand out.
Or you could take it in a different direction by going black. I have huge black bookshelves which work wonderfully. Most of the accessories are glass so they capture the light just right. My walls are olive green and my furniture is mahogany and black. It's just a really nice touch to things.
I'm thinking a sage-y green.....
Ooooo.... I think I would paint it a chocolate brown.
