What Does You Master Bedroom Look Like?

Since I am going to have some free time soon, I want to completely redo my master bedroom. We need to paint, new curtains, bedding, etc. Do you have a theme? I go back and forth between whether I want a relaxed themed (think spa), romantic theme (thinking deeper colors), a contemporary theme...I'm just not sure. I see some of all of them that I love.

Did you do something in your room that you loved or hated?

What can I do next?

I'm not good at decorating at all so I just look online for ideas. It all sounds great doesn't it? My bedroom used to be wall to wall bookcases and "stuff". Now we took out all the bookcases and starting fresh. Three months later, I have yet to decide what to do either. lol

I'd really love a romantic theme though but a bit more contemporary. Not anything sexy, just sophisticated. I'm now thinking after seeing a few things on Pinterest to not paint the walls a color, just do white with black doors (yeah, who knew right?) and then add color in my decor. That way it's way easy to change the look. Good luck!

Go for the spa relaxed theme. I tried all the rest at various times, when I felt creative and was attracted to color, and found I was most satisfied with the relaxed spa look and always returned to it. I found contemporary dull after a while and romantic, was at times, too overwhelming. The spa colors seemed to soothe me and make me feel good to be in the bedroom, with or without my husband, with or without the kids. Keep in mind, that the bedroom is your sanctuary and you want to be at peace in there. Good luck in whatever works for you.

We have no theme--mismatched furniture & whatever bedding was a great deal.

BUT, I DO have a theme in mind, and it is mixture of spa & romantic. Pale blues or greens with dark espresso colored furniture. Stacked crystal lamps with silk shades.

I've been compiling an Ideabook at www.houzz.com . That is a great site to get inspiriation.

Purple accent wall. Gray walls on three sides. See through fireplace. Built in bookshelf above the bed. Bed and no other furniture. Well, at the moment a pack and play bassinet thingy and a glider rocker. And the pictures we haven't hung yet. And a couple of Mrs. On Purpose's boxes that she refuses to unpack. And a few of my weights.

Oh, and the wall facing the backyard is all floor to ceiling windows. Windows fit every theme. :)

you know...it's very easy to combine elements of each design into your own version of "eclectic". :)

For me, I was surprised to see that you connect "romantic" with deeper colors. For many people, "romantic" is usually lighter, fluffier, & very girly. I applaud you for leaning toward a deeper palette!

The "feel" & color is what drives me with rooms. I am not afraid to blend boundaries....so a good starting point for you would be: look at your furniture/flooring, & then choose a piece of artwork to set the tone/mood of the room. Choose your colors from the focal artwork. & when you're doing this, really think about what's most important & how you want the room to serve you.

My bedroom is a mix of antique pieces & treasures.
Walls are metallic gold glazed over a peach/pink/lavendar stippling. Sounds weird, but it works beautifully & just glows with lamplight. Blackout curtains in a mossy green/muted red/peach tapestry. Very traditional, almost medieval.
Bedding is a muted red/orange matelasse, very tomato-ish in color. Surprisingly, this muted bedding works very well with the tapestry drapery.
Artwork is either natural (bent willow, tramp art shelves) or antique prints.
Bedside tables are antq tea tables, one with a carved dragon base. Lamps are Art Deco onyx & brushed steel. The others are various glass.
His & her's Mission Oak chifferobes. Walnut/oak inlay dresser.
Console table of 2 antiq matte black lacquer Asian tables.
China cabinet, painted mossy green....my Gpa's antq tool & diemaker's tool chest (black)....& an antq oak timeclock from Anheuser Busch.

All of this is thrown together & works to achieve Peace. It's been called a very Zen-like Bed&Breakfast bedroom. & I have to admit it is a serene room! My best advice....use what speaks to your heart & soul. :)

Check out Houzz.com. It is a great site for home decorating ideas. I want to redo my bedroom too especially since my comforter just ripped.
We redid my study, dining room, living room and foyer last year by adding extensive moulding. (2000 linear feet) I feel like we moved. It totally changed the appearance of those rooms.

Nothing in my house is themed and I get a lot of compliments on it. lol I just buy what I like. Although my personal preferance is to have the entire house be the same "theme". Like I dont' like when the living room is black/red and then you walk to the family room and its tan/burgandy and then the guest bath is yellow and green plaid. Know what I mean? Like they should all blend.

Anyhoo, we have a king bed, oak headboard and attached nightstands that are bookcases as well. It takes up the entire wall. I think its 11' wide. We don't have a tv in our bedroom, which I LOVE. But I HATE that my husband has his huge desk in there for work since we don't have room for an office (4 bedrooms and they are all taken). Since we rent, and will likely not buy for another 4+ years, I am not putting a lot of effort into decorating for now. I'm saving that for when we own a house. =)

Love this question because I love my bedroom. I would describe my bedroom as a relaxed, romantic contemporary oasis. My walls are Fudge the trim, door and ceiling are ultra pure white. My curtains are also brown. My comforter is a deep red with a gold pattern. I have solid sheets in teal, red, brown, and pale green. Our bedroom is the most romantic place in the house. We are able to rest peacefully and romance each other thoroughly.

The walls were a lighter shade of brown but it didn't have the same feel. When we went even darker it was such a dramatic pop. We love, love love it.

FYI - all paint came from Lowes their Valspar brand and the actual name of the color is Fudge. With a semigloss finish.

Once I had a bedroom that was beige, that was the worse choice I ever made for a bedroom color. I've had bedrooms in white, red, navy blue, robin's egg blue, and purple (think a purple crayon). By far the Fudge wins hands down.

I do believe if I were to go with some other color my next conquest will be a Tiffany's teal/aqua.

My bedroom very much looks like a typical Pottery Barn room, clean, crisp, neutral colors (tan walls, white trim, black furniture) light carpet, wicker baskets to throw stuff in. It's bright and open and has a very serene feel to it. The duvet and shams add some color (sage, pumpkin, eggplant) and I have a few nice wine country photo prints on the wall.
I like peaceful, calming colors for a bedroom.
Of course there's big, hairy dog bed at the end of our bed, my husband's nightstand is covered with cords and chargers and controllers, and because I fold laundry in there the bed and floor are usually covered with clothes in various stages of the laundry/ironing process. But I digress. Overall it's a lovely room!

I redecorate fairly often I have to admit. My walls are taupe so very rarely do I have to repaint. I love the furniture - cherry wood with wrought iron accents.
When I was with my ex, it was a light aqua with brown accents (bedding and prints, etc.)
After we separated, I got a white duvet with yellow, black and gray swirls. I painted a couple prints with the same colors and did some other accents (amazing deals at the dollar store if you can paint to match).
When my fiance moved in we redecorated again. Now we have a tan pintucked comforter with deep red curtains, red pillows, candles, metal artwork, flower petal pillow on the chair, red throw on the bed and chair, etc.

My daughter wants to redo her bedroom that we completely redecorated not even two years ago...wonder where she gets it from???

Well, if you really want to know what it looks like, it has all the wallpaper ripped off, and it is very dusty and dirty. We are in the middle of it all!! We just replaced our windows and got the new trim up, and are hopefully going to have the painting done before Thanksgiving. And we love dark colors. It also lets the room be darker, and that is nice for day sleeping as well.

We have a "British West Indies" theme going . . . tropical green paint, white crown molding, hard wood floor and cherry furniture with all white bedding. When I saw the paint color I hated it (was suggested to us by our designer) but on the walls I love it.

Very south Florida . . .

Hi, Mom:

What colors do you like? That's where you start.
What type of pictures do you like?

What kind of furniture will you be using?

For example:

1 room) White is a favorite of mine.
The walls are a light aqua color that wiill
pick up the back ground colors in my pictures.
White rug and white bedspread.

2cd room) Suntan wall color with
background color of green or color
in pictures.
White carpet, white bedspread.

3rd room) light yellow wall color with
angel panel with gold varigation.
Mauroon carpet and mauroon
quilted bedspread.
Angel tree toppers around the room.

This room is my children's room.

Think about what are your favorite colors.
Go to the paint store and get chips of paint
and think about which color you would like to
see on your wall.

Good luck.

2 suggestions - 1. find bedding that you absolutely love - that is comfortable, cool in summer, warm in winter and that is beautiful...you should sigh when you look at it - LOL! Then let that be your guide. Everything doesn't have to be matchy matchy a la the 80's but it should be cohesive. 2. no matter what, paint your room a cool, calming color. No one will sleep well in a bright room! We painted our room a color I call "chocolate milk" - it's a cool tan/brown that makes me think of drinking ice cold chocolate milk which is relaxing to me (perhaps I'm weird?!). We are in negotiations now to update our room a little. I want to buy new dressers. Ours are old, hand-me-downs which are fine except they don't fit on the walls where I would like them to be. We own a massage table that we used to have up in our room and that was a wonderful treat for us - to give each other massages. Somehow, furniture took it's place at some point. So, looking to declutter and refresh soon I hope! Oh, I accent the tan with different shades of blues in the room - cobalt, teal, light blue. The bathroom is a tannish/gray color with chocolate and gray tiles in the shower and on the floor. We have a little blue and a little black going on in there. Probably sounds odd but it really does all flow together nicely and is fairly modern (we just renovated the bathroom 3 years ago).

I found the furniture online along with these bedsheets: http://sublwash.info/the-grove-collection-master-bedroom-... For the walls, I did a cool grey and added yellow as a color splash. We have wood flooring in our Master bedroom. I would totally tell you about my Master bath but I would go on forever!!

Lake house, and you'll never tire of it. Light blue walls. Vinyl decals of sailboats on the walls with inspirational sayings like "Let your dreams set sail." Then you get to have so much fun finding stuff online, like sailboat valance, a life preserver pillow, etc. And lots of plaques that say Lake House or cottage, etc. Note all this is strategically placed, not overdone. And the room needs to be kept spotless to help bring about the calm that it promises.

I have dark brown wood furniture (no head or foot board). My bedspread is palm leaves so the colors are beige, and shades of green. The bath is also with palm trees in the similar shades of green. I still have the ugly vertical blinds up because I am not sure what kind of curtains I want in there.

I had an experience similar to Angeles T....especially when I was younger I'd try to sex it up with a beautiful sleigh bed and deeper colors, or the poster bed with rails and the beautiful burgandy comforter that you needed a map to get out of, it was soooooo comfy. But every time, I always went back to the relaxing, quieter tones for my bedroom. I've decided that my bedroom is for rejuvenation and peace. Everything can be bright, active, and lively all over the house with our little guys, but my bedroom is supposed to be my sanctuary where I recharge.
Our master bedroom is a decent size: we have a kind of French country thing going in there with the rustic white tallboy, a lovely armoir, and 2 nightstands that match the tallboy (which is actually "different" and the coolest version of a dresser I've seen, with one half in a glass door, the different accents and drawers...people always stop by to "pet" it if they come in there, which is rare). The walls are a really light green with an offwhite trim on the baseboards , there's windows that look out over our garden and yard, into the woods behind us, and we have very sheer white "things" (not curtains, but to mute the light in the windows), good plantation blinds. The curtain rods match our queen bed (4 poster iron bed with neat accents and little rails all along the head and foot). We have a tray ceiling, so we did green on the walls, a white ceiling, and then the inside of the "tray" (all the sides) it's green, and then the very top again, white, with a great ceiling fan and dimmer lights that have a remote control. There's a walk-in closet for Jeremy, and then the private master bath has 2 doors that open into that, which is where my walk-in closet is. We have some neat pictures, just kind of quiet paintings: one is big, a big bouquet of flowers...one is a lovely picture of a girl (she reminds me of the older sister in Renoir's "2 Sisters") in a garden, and another is from my grandma---someone's idea of the secret garden. It all goes nicely with the green and the view from the windows overlooking our own garden and woods. No TV or computer allowed. There are very few things better than waking up slowly with the blinds open a bit, a little breeze blowing in, and the light shining through the azalea bushes into our room, making a soft green glow like I was laying in my own garden. Very relaxing.
As for themes: I guess we kinda have different themes for the different rooms. My son's room is a "cowboy room", my baby's room is bright and adorable, but transportation themed, the guest room is a peaceful, relaxing beach theme (since we live near the beach), my bedroom is a french country / garden theme (though that wasn't on purpose), and the living room, dining room, entry, and upstairs are "together" but eclectic...tan or wood flooring, beige walls with white trim, crown molding, and drapes, dark espresso wood furniture, chocolate couches, and souvenirs from around the world. The upstairs playroom is a bright....weird color. Orangey-red, with white trim, posters, canvas paintings that the boys made, a framed family tree, "etc". It looks really fun though. I'd rather the "general spaces" look more homogenous, and the bedrooms look more individual to the person staying in there, than everything in the house "matching".

i pick a comforter i like then take a color from it and paint the walls that color. then another color from the comforter becomes the color of the curtains. and wala...bedroom. we didhappen to have some paintings that have the same colors in it as the walls so we hung them in the bedroom. you could take a darker shade of the wall color you chose and paint the wall the head board is on. or maybe even another color from the comforter. never paint first though as the colors of paint are endless and the things you fill a room with are harder to find in certain colors.

Please add "making me think of how much my circa 1992 bedroom needs to be updated" to the list of why I hate spending so much time on this site!!!!

Pink (actually mauve) and blue tiny floral and striped wallpaper (ugh), mauve carpet that was never laid right (insert off-color joke about what HAS been laid right in my bedroom), queen anne style cherry furniture, simple comforter/shams in cranberry - that's when the bed is made which isn't often. Desk/work area for my home business - hate that I don't have room anywhere else. On the plus side, hubby has his own room across the hall, so I don't have any smelly socks or dirty clothes on the floor.
