Overweight and Starting an Excercise Routine

Does anyone have suggestions about starting a excercise regiment? I am very overweight and have foot pain when I move around too much. This makes it hard for me to get enough excercise. When I have mentioned weight loss to my doctor, they tell me "move more, eat less". Helpful, huh. If I could do that on my own, I would not be in my current situation. When I was a kid, I played soccer and had a bad sprain and now that foot is prone to excessive pain. I need something I can do at home, as I am home with a 3 1/2 yr old and 20 month old. Thanks for any help you can give me!

What can I do next?

Hi A.,
I just posted a request for a weight loss buddy. I need to lose 80 pounds. I am looking for someone to do it with me, it's always easier to travel on this road with someone.

Hi A.

Before starting your exercise routine you may want to do a cleanse and lose some weight first. This way you will feel better and be able to find out what excercise program fits you best. Either walking or peddling a bike, something that has very little or no impact.

Check out this short video on cleansing and let me know what you think. www.cleansedforlife.com

God Bless You!

I've exercised to Walk Away the Pounds DVDs by Leslie Sansone and they're not that intense. Someone also suggested the stationery bike which is a good idea too.

I also did "walk away the pounds" dvd's for a while. They were great! Very easy to follow, and very low impact. If you get a set of 2 pound weights to use with it, you will get a nice workout. One thing I do suggest is making a point each day to do the tape. The same way you would not miss an appointment - don't miss working out. I would wake up at 5:30am and do it while everyone was still sleeping. It really got my day started, and I had a lot more energy on the days I worked out. Once you start, you feel better about yourself because you know you are doing something to take care of youself. I don't do the tapes any longer because I joined the gym, but they were great.

How about a stationary bike? Your foot would not have a great deal of weight on it, and the exercise is terrific. Just a thought - hope you find something that works for you.

I have the same problem as you. I have been trying to lose weight, but I really son't have time. One thing that I have tried and had luck with is The Biggest Loser Workout DVD. the workout is about 40 minutes long and it is not very intense. I alos have foot problems and I am really not bothered with this workout. I would also suggest getting a good pair of cross trainer sneakers. I purchased a pair of New Balance 1009's and they help my feet a lot. They are not cheap, but they are worth every penny.
Another suggestion would be to find out what your "bad" eating habbits are. I thought mine was bordom, however after talking to my nurse practitioner, I found ut that I was eating because of mild depression. She put me on as antidepressant and I have noticed that I am a whole different person. I on't have the urge to eat half of what I used to and I don't have my "bad" food cravings! This might be something that is worth talking to your doctor about. Good Luck!!

I wanted to recommend Weight Watchers. I have lost 30 lbs with them in the past got pregnant and rejoined recently and have already lost another 20 lbs. They teach you about food and what your eating triggers are. I realize that on 1 income it is hard to come up with any $$$ for yourself, but this is only 10/week and is not just for you it is for the whole family. You will be eating better and therefore the whole family will be eating better.

I have 2 kids 4.5 yrs old and a 2 yr old, and I work full time so I know how hard it is getting a workout in; however, I do find putting on some music and dancing with the kids is fun for them and wow who knew slow dancing with them would be such a work out. You could also sit and lift the kids with your legs / arms. In the summer swim.

Again weight watchers is your first step, and get rid off all the "bad" foods in the house, so they cannot tempt you. I lost 8 lbs in 2 wks w/out exercising.

Good luck

It is very difficult to get any exercise in with small children. I can sympathise with you totally! I am desparately in need to dropping weight and am finding it very difficult. I have a DVD series that i like, and try to get it in with the baby is down for her naps. My 3 y/o just has to deal with mommy taking up "TV time". But the most important thing is: CHANGE OF DIET! I know that sounds easy, but it's probably the most difficult thing to do! Get rid of all processed food and you've got a good start on getting rid of lots of fats and salts. Get rid of sugary snacks and you've gotten rid of the sugar that goes to fat. Eat fresh, raw foods as much as possible (veggies and fruits I mean, not meats! ;)) and whole grains in place of white (breads and pastas) and you'll see some weight loss. Then comes the other part: exercise.
You'll never lose the weight with just eating habits changed. You have to also burn off extra calories. How to do that without putting alot of pressure on your foot and staying at home is a hard one! I would suggest starting a regime of exercise on the floor. Concentrate on things like crunches and leg lifts and push-up type exercises. You can find many different kinds. That way you are moving without putting strain on your feet. Getting a bike is good too. Swimming would be fabulous, but i understand the difficulty in getting out of the house with small children. But you should still make a point of taking walks every day. This you can do with the kids too. Pack them into the stroller and go for a walk around the block. Gradually increase the distance as your foot becomes accustomed. And in the evenings, take care of your aching foot. Do hot/cold baths and massage to help get more flexibility in the muscles as well as relaxation.
I know how difficult it is...I'm going through the same thing (minus the foot pain) but i hate my size! I've balloned from a decent 6/8 to a whopping 12! I may not be obese but i'm big for me, which is all that matters. I've got upwards of 25 pounds to drop and i'd like to do it by mid-summer. Impossible? Maybe, but i'd like to go towards that goal. Good luck with you and i'll be thinking of you as i struggle along too.
