My daughter is 4 and has been potty trained for about 6 months. Late at doing this. Was always afraid until then. I have her on these overnights so she doesn't go in bed when she is asleep. She has been on them for a few months and still hasn't helped her. How can I help her to not go while she sleeps? I stopped giving her drinks about an hour before she goes to bed, but that doesn't help. I want to get her off of these overnights. Please help. thank you

My 4 1/2 year old wears good nites too. He was potty trained and 3, but is a deep, deep sleeper. From reading and talking to the doctor, it can be up to 7 or 8 years old before they accomplish the overnight dry. Other kids are fine.

Mine has just had two nights dry!! We are now consistenly 1-2 nights a week dry. We ar just waiting it out!!

Good luck

Hi J. my name is A. im a mom of 4 wounderful kids (3 girls and 1 boy). When i was potting training my kids what i did was 1) didnt give them anything to drink a hour before they had to go to bed and 2) i didnt put them in those overnite diapers on them i made them where the panties/underwear all day long. Even when it was bedtime it works cause no child is going to what to mess up their new pamties/underwear at all. Take your daughter shopping let her pick out her favorite panties to wear let her know that she is big girl now and big girls get to wear really cute panties all the time. She will love it cause she got to do it all by herself with mommy. My youngest daughter is 3yr old we started potting training her at 2yr old with in 6 months she wasnt haveing any accidents at all at home, daycare, and in public. We made her go potty every 5 mins so she got used to going in the bathroom now she goes all by herself turns the light on /off when she is done. I take her shopping so she can pick out new panties for her. The overnites are like diapers to her so you need to get rid of those so she knows that she is big girl now. Hope this was helpful sorry if i was harsh or rude bout this like i said im sorry didnt want to hurt anyone feeling okay.

J.,
It is not really anything with "potty training". She may not have full control of her bladder. My little guy was potty trained at 2 and wore goodnights until about 5 1/2. He sleeps so hard he never wakes up at night. You might ask your Doctor. Stopping the liquids and making sure she empties her badder before bed are about the best you can do for now. Just be patient, it will come.

I agree with the previous poster -- this isn't a "training" issue. This is something she has no control over if she's doing it in her sleep. You might give your ped a call to discuss this and see if he or she has some insight.

Some kiddos take a long time and my understanding is that it's a physiological issue and not a reflection on their intelligence or determination. I heard that there's a hormone the body produces to prevent night wetting and this kicks in in some kiddos later than others so please don't think it's anything you or your daughter are or aren't doing right. Chances are, it's a maturity issue that will in time correct itself.

The best advice I can give on this is time...not probably what you want to hear, but it is the truth. My son luckily doesn't have this issue, but I have a really good friend and she has tried EVERYTHING. A lot of it is physiological and there is not much that you can do about that. Just give it time - this time won't last forever!

I would set my alarm clock to wake up in the middle of the night to take me son to the potty at night

You may not like this one, however during that stage in my daughters life I would wake up and take her to the bathroom; even if I had to set my alarm. Furthermore, it will establish discipline for your child and consistancy to repeat a new habit that will prove effective in the long term.

My 4 1/2 year old still sometimes pees the bed during the night but we don't put her in pullups. She wears underwear and we do limit liquids before bed and make sure she's gone potty right before she lies down. But we also wake her up before WE go to bed (actually she sleeps right through this usually) and take her to potty. She usually pees and then makes it til morning without wetting the bed!

Hi J.,

I second Bridget--the best we have is to wake them up before we go to bed so they can go potty again. Ours pretty much sleepwalk through it too. They usually make it then until morning which is great improvement over changing sheets every night before we started doing this.

Good Luck!

I am right there with you. I have a 5 1/2 year old who still has to wear pullups at night. She only wets 1 or 2 times a month but you have no idea when that time will be. The doctor says not only no drinks before bed but definitely no caffeine also to make sure that they go right before bed. She says that the "waking up in the middle of the night" routine is not really helpful because the goal is to have them hold it longer. She simply said that it is something they usually outgrow and if it continues past age 6 then usually one of the parents did that as well as a child (my daughter is adopted so I have no idea).

Let me know if you get any good tips. This is very frustrating as I don't want her teased by other children at any sleepovers.

I work for a really great group of Pediatricians and have this same issue with my 5 year old. I have been told by the nurses and physicians that getting thru the night without an accident can take a long time to accomplish. I still put my child in pull-ups/overnights, avoid caffeine before bed and make him go right before he goes to sleep, however, they are not in full control of their bladder thru the night yet. I have been that children can have this problem on and off until they are 7 or 8. It is more stressful on the child to make a big deal out of the night time wetting. Always consult with your Pediatrician, but they should be telling you the same thing. Most of the nights my son wakes up dry and when he wants to wear "big boy underwear" to bed, I will let him. Just be sure to have a good waterproof mattress protector. Hope this helps, :-) Good Luck!

Well it's my first time being on here, but I guess I was lucky that my daughter has been potty trained for awhile now. She is 3yrs. old and still sometimes she wets the bed, I have learned to make sure she has the pant pj's w/top maybe socks if its not too hot outside, but if I put the a/c on to low or a fan is right on her thats when she wets the bed, I have to constantly make sure she is covered up and she uses the bathroom b4 she goes to bed, plus don't know about the hr before rule but I myself only let her have milk or water in the last few hrs. of being up, I heard juices go through the body faster...Don't know if this will help but something is better than nothing...Give her time she will grow out of it we all do..

Not much help here. My daughter is 8. She just within this year stopped going in the night. She was potty trained by three. I can't remember if she always did it. I think she did it every know and then. But I do know, the last two years she would wet the bed.

Soda or caffenated drinks also cause the bladder to have spasms and cause the wetting. She finally did it. Every know and then, if she is really tired or has coke or lots of water before bed, she will have an accident.

Some children just do this.

Sorry not much help.
