Oreck or Dyson

I've been saving to get a great vacuum cleaner and I've now narrowed it down to either the Oreck or the Dyson (although I'm still thinking about the Kirby). I wanted to get your opinions. I'm leaning toward the Oreck because of the 10 or 21 year warranty and it is soooo lightweight!! (I've got a two story house) I also like that the attachments are separate.
Does anyone have an Oreck? What do you think about it? Does it need a lot of maintenance - does it cost to get it repaired? When one of my girlfriends got hers repaired, they sent her home with a loaner so that she could still vacuum while hers was being fixed :)
What about the Kirby or the Dyson? I've heard that Dysons are harder to get repaired (more expensive and takes a lot of time).
I have three dogs and two young kids and my current vacuum is not doing the job! I've got mainly carpet with tile in the kitchen and entry way.
Thanks!

I have a Kirby, which I do like, but borrowed my neighbors Dyson and I love it! Go for the Dyson. The Kirby is well made and could withstand an elephant trampling on it and it'll last forever, but when it comes to the bag vs the bagless...... the bag just isn't as good. Go Dyson, go bagless.

I LOVE my Dyson!!!!! It made my shag carpet (that seemed a little matted down) look like new! I have had the Oreck. I prefer my Dyson. I don't have to buy bags for the Dyson. It came with everything and it WORKS!

LOVE the Dyson as well, and as long as you clean the filters every 6 months and treat it like any other appliance (regular "cleaning", etc. most vacuums are used & ignored otherwise) it will be your best friend for a long time! I have not had any problems in 3 years, and I have 2 labs and vacuum every other day. I would say I have gotten my $$ worth!

As for belts/parts, etc. You can order directly from Dyson and replace yourself. Good luck with your decision!

Also, Dyson is offering a 10-year warrenty for all vacuums purchased ... great deal!

I LOVE my Dyson!! Love it, Love it, Love it. We (had) a very furry cat and have a very active toddler in a 3500 sq. ft. 2-story home with mostly carpet. I also have horrible allergies to the standard stuff - pet dander, dust, etc. AFter the first time we used our Dyson, I was able to breathe much better in my home. Since then, Ive been able to sleep through the night without waking up trying to breathe. We also had our carpets cleaned right before Christmas and the guy who came to clean it was very complimentary about the conditions of our carpets and asked what we used. Our vacuum is only about 6 months old, so I dont know about wear and tear yet. But I couldnt ask fora better vaccuum. I hope this helps - good luck!!

In a recent Consumers Report Magazine article they said the Dyson was highly over rated. They also said that bags were better than the bagless machines. They recommended a Kenmore Upright that has been on sale at Sears for around $285. Consumers report generally knows what they are talking about. You might go online and check to see if they have anything on it or check out their magazine. Good luck

I have a dyson and it's great. I have two dogs (Cocker and a Bassett Hound) and two kids (3 and 1). So, I know about dog hair and kiddo messes. I have the 07 Animal that I got off ebay for much cheaper than anywhere else (in new condition). I couldn't believe the difference it made. In the first room alone, it was almost filled by dust and dirt that my old vacuum didn't pick up. It is a very good machine and works wonderfully. It's the best thing I've bought! My housekeeper (comes once a month) used it and thought it was the best thign ever. She even recommends her clients get one (darn, I wish I was making some money for every time I've referred someone...ah/ah). She's used many different kinds of vaccums but says the Dyson is the best. I have to agree.

My sister and I both bought Oreck and we love it. They are light weight and the suction is very strong. The warranty is great. Once a year I drop it off and they will clean and do any belt changes and repairs for free. They gave me a loaner while they had mine. They also have an awesome carpet cleaning product for stains...it works great for pet stains and odors.

My husband saw the same poor reviews for Dyson. Oreck has been around for many years and I think they have a great product. If you can, buy the top of the line Oreck.

I highly recommend going to a vacuum store and talking to the owner to get their recommendations. I've heard a lot about Dysons, but when I talked to a vacuum store owner, she couldn't have been more negative about them. She said they were worth about $80, and that as much as they said they had great suction, their suction was rather poor (about a 33 out of 100 on the suction scale, if I remember correctly). She also said that even if you need a simple belt replaced, which you should be able to do yourself for $2, you send a Dyson in and get charged $80. Eeek! She also said that Dysons are currently being sued for false advertising. Apparently, the maker of Dysons used to make another vacuum (Phantom, not sure of the spelling), and they were sued as well, so they stopped making Phantoms and started Dysons. Finally, she said that bagless vacuums are a bad idea for homes with small children, because they spew bacteria whereas a bagged vacuum catches it and keeps it in the bag.

She wasn't as vocal about Orecks, but did say she didn't recommend them. Her recommendation was Sibo, a European company. The vacuums looked pretty nice and had lots of great features, and while they were a little pricier than a Dyson, they're meant to last a long, long time - like 20 years as opposed to a Dyson's 5.

We have an Oreck that we bought cheap off of eBay. We decided to go with an Oreck becaue my mom has had one for years. We borrowed hers once when our old vacuum was broken and my husband LOVED it. He said it would suck up cheerios that were 2 inches away from the vacuum! Ours doesn't have as good a suction as my mom's does, but she had recently spent about $100 to have hers re-conditioned -- new bag, new motor, new roller; practically a new vacuum. They did a great job and her Oreck is great! Like I said, ours doesn't have as good a suction as my mom's, but what disappointed me about the Oreck was the roller. I have long hair. My daughter has longer hair. I shed a LOT. We used our Oreck for about 6 months, maybe closer to a year, and it just wasn't working right. I took it to an Oreck store and they said they had to replace the roller because of all the hair that was wrapped around the ends. You see my husband had been cutting off the hair that had accumulated on the roller, but it also gets wrapped around the ends where you can't really get it off without taking the roller completely out, and after so long, the only thing they can do is replace it. Replacing it and having the annual maintenace was around $100. That was more than double what we paid for the vacuum on eBay. We talked about buying one of those 21 year Orecks to solve the problem of having to pay for the yearly maintenace charges and another big bill like that one every year or so to take care of the hair issue, but the Oreck store owner said replacement of the roller is not covered on their warranties. Even with the 21 year $700 vacuum,we would have had to pay for that repair ourselves. So everything is not covered on those warranties. I'm glad we bought the used Oreck. I didn't feel bad about having to spend the $100 to get it fixed since we're still ahead of where we would have been if we had bought one new. It works better than any of the other cheapy vacuums we have owned so we'll stick with it for now. If I had to buy another vacuum, I'd probably try to get a used Commercial Oreck. We have our house professionally cleaned usually once or twice a year and they use one of those. It's great! It's better than my mom's. It's more expensive of course, but that's probably the route I'd go next time if I had to. Good luck to you!

I adore my Dyson. I have three dogs and a toddler, so it gets a big workout every day. It is wonderful. I have recommended it to friends and everyone has loved the results. Target sometimes has them on sale or has a free gift card with purchase. I've seen that promotion a few times. Definitely try to get it on sale!
