I was told not to use orajel as it numbs their gag reflexes and can cause them to choke on their own saliva. I was giving Generic Tylenol before bedtime, but then many parents told me that they had better luck with Motrin so I switched. Motrin is an anti-inflammatory so it eases the pain better.

My pediatrician cautioned so strongly about Orajel that I just avoided it mostly. IF you use it--apply as a tiny dot with a Q-Tip and only on the specific spot that's hurting (pretty much impossible, right? Hence, my avoidance!).
Too much and misplaced Orajel can cause their throats to numb and choke and gag--just not worth it in my opinion.
Try Hyland's Teething Tablets and Tylenol if needed for pain.
He can also gnaw on damp, the frozen baby washcloths in the day time.

Hi S.,

I used the nighttime orajel all the time until I spoke with my pediatrician about it. He suggested not using either one at all. It does wonders when it is first applied, but it tightens the gums, so when the tooth is actually breaking through or growing, it causes more pain. It is made to do that so you use more of it, more often, then need to buy more, etc, etc...

I used those teething tablets and they were wonderful. They were made with all natural ingredients so they can be used extremely often. You simply massage them into the gums and they dissolve as you do that.

Good luck with whatever you decide to use and I hope your son is feeling better soon,
L.

Per my Pediatrician... she does NOT recommend Orajel type things... because it can numb the mouth/tongue/throat... and may cause choking on saliva or tongue or cause swallowing problems.
And especially if the baby is given to much.
I would... stay away from it.

Not all babies, experience pain from teething. My Daughter was fine... but my son had pain. I gave him Tylenol or Hyland's. He also liked to chew on a face cloth, that I dampened and then 'froze' in the freezer.

Our pediatrician also cautioned us and advised us not to use orajel and if we felt we needed to use it to use it very very sparingly. Tylenol/Motrin and some gentle naturals teething drops works much better anyways.

Our pediatrician recommends Tylenol over oragel since it has a longer lasting effect and doesn't numb the tongue like the gel often tends to. It's worked great for us, especially at nighttime. My girlfriend uses infant advil for the same reason and it has the anti-inflammatory properties as well and lasts longer through the night.

Good luck!

My pediatrician said the same - don't use it because of the numbing so I didnt. I always used motrin (during nighttime) if I suspected teething.

Forget the orajel, get the Hyland's teething tablets. I got mine at Target, I'm sure you can find them in the baby section at most stores. My son would calm down at the sight of the bottle, that's how much they helped! Plus, they are easy to administer, versus trying to get a gel to stick on the right spot on a crying, drooling baby. I never bothered with the directions to "place under the tongue" - yeah right! Just give them one at a time and it'll be fine, they dissolve instantly.
