Baby Motrin worked much better for my kids than tylenol. It lasts longer too! This feels like it will last forever, but it WILL pass. It is sometimes really awful in the meantime.
My baby girl is almost 8 mts and since the last 3 days she won't nurse or take a bottle. At first I didn't understand why, until I google and find out what it was. Teething has made her and my life hell. I mean she is not the happy baby she used to be.
She eats only solids, but I'm worried she might become dehydrated. I have tried the sippy cup, but she only chews on it. So I give her water or juice with a spoon, but won't really drink a good amount.
I tried nursing but she refuses and gets mad, I'm a first time mom. And has made me really sad. I'm giving her tylenol for pain and cold fruity foods. I don't know what else to do to comfort her...
Any suggestions I will really appreciate!!
Thanks
Thank you ladies so much for your response. I'm going to try all of it!! And see how she reacts. I have to head to the store..

Hyland's Teething tablets are a God send cure for teething pain. They are homeopathic. You can get them at Wal-Mart, Walgreens, etc. They are little tablets that you place on the baby's tongue and they dissolve instantly. You can use 2 or 3 of them at a time. There is nothing in them that is dangerous to the child.
I see where most people are saying Motrin is better than Tylenol. This could be true. Remember Motrin is an anti-inflammatory, so it will reduce the swelling, it also has pain relief. Tylenol is a pain reliever only. You can alternate. I know for adults and children it is ok to take Motrin and Tylenol at the same time, found that out from the doctor recently. I don't know about that for babies.
Give her hylands and baby oragel right before you try to nurse her. It always worked for my baby girls.
Also, don't rule out an ear infection. My DD NEVER has a fever with her's. If you do the hylands and the oragel and she's still acting miserable, along with some tylenol or motrin, call your pedi., they might want to check her out. Good luck!
Use Hyland's teething tablets...they are wonderful.
Make homemade ice pops out of juice for fluids. Most kids love these but watch her with them so she doesn't burn her gum from the cold. Watch for signs of dehydration and get her to the Dr or ER, if she is. Has she had a cold recently? If so, there is a possibility of an ear infection. She's right at that age where they start! If she has been sick, I'd get her to the doctor today. What you describe are also signs of ear infection.
The whole "fever thing" is controversial. Personally, my kids never had fever from teething but I don't doubt that some do. If there was to be fever from teething, it should be low grade. If high, it's a virus or bacterial infection. So, if she gets a fever, even more of a reason to watch for ear infections.
As for medication, our doctor suggested we stay away from Orajel because there is a possibility of seizures. I gave my kids Motrin at night but only when they were really struggling with their teething (when it was at it's worst). Good luck; teething is no fun.
.
Try giving her a few ice chips. Continue to try & nurse her & offer her liquids, infants can get dehydrated fast. I would also try Motrin instead of Tylenol. Good luck. It won't last forever.
Take a bagel and cut it quarters and freeze them. Frozen bagels are really good. You can also take a wet wash cloth and freeze it as well. I found that Motrin worked better for my son than Tylenol. You can also do both (check with your ped re dosage first, right?). Just try what you can. I think pedialite has some "otter pop" type deals you can freeze. I bet she might like those. Good luck. Teething is just the worst. Hopefully this will be the worst you go through.
We loved the "Gentle Naturals Teething Drops" (Winnie the Pooh on the box). Other homeopathic teething remedies have belladona (which can be dangerous in large quantities), but Gentle Naturals only has chamomile. We used it with our first two but have had a hard time finding it in stores with our third, but it is available at Amazon and through Target's online store. Also, she is old enough that you could use infant Ibuprofen, we found it worked a little better than Tylenol. With one of my sons at the absolute worse teething we had to use tylenol, then overlap with ibuprofen (similar to how you do with fevers) and give the Gentle Naturals drop on top of that to get him to nurse. Use that window well. If your child will eat solids, then just try to make sure some fluid gets in. Try sippy cups WITHOUT the valve so your child doesn't have to suck to get the fluid which would be painful and also give lots of "solids" with high fluid contents (fruits like applesauce). If you notice dark circles under the eyes or you can depress the skin and it springs back slowly, then contact your pediatrician right away - these are signs of dehydration.
Teething feels like little needles poking through her gums. Get her some" Hyland's Homeopathic - Teething Tablets" you should be able to find them at places like Whole Foods, Sprouts.. Some Pharmacy's also carry them .. Call around before you drive around.. They are safe.
We used to do the frozen bagels and it also worked.. Also I would freeze wash cloths.. Our daughter found a lot of relief from both..
I am sending you strength.
I agree with the Mom who said motrin was better. My ped actually suggested I alternate the meds to give relief. hope you can nurse then as this will do you both good. the other thing I would rule out is an ear infection. much luck, A.
have you tried the baby orajel? that might work....babies tend to like really cold things for their teething frustrations. If you're worried about dehydration, take a small very clean washcloth, place it in a clean bowl of water and place in freezer for about 15 minutes. THen take it out, rinse almost all of the water out and then let the baby suck on a corner of the cold washcloth. She'll get the hydration from the water and relief from the teething from the cold.
Choose food that have a high concentration of water in them since she's eating. For example, place a few grapes in the freezer for about an hour. Then cut them into appropriate sized pieces for her and let her eat those as they will be cold for her teething and should have lots of water in them naturally for her hydrating purposes. Other foods that have high water content in them that would be okay chilled are cucumbers, watermelon, cantaloupe (any melons really), and pineapple.
We tried teething tablets, orajel, Tylenol, and frozen washcloths, among other things, for my daughter when she was teething. The only thing that helped her was Motrin. When I told the pediatrician, he said that was very common. We gave it to her round the clock for days at a time. Just keep your pedi in the loop if there's a fever. Good luck; I know it's frustrating.
My kids ALWAYS ran fevers while teething..anywhere from 99 to 103..I would still give her a sippy cup..she may chew on it..but she'll still get some fluid in her...chewing is good. If you have to.freeze your sippy cup of water or juice. put oragel on her gums and give her the cup..its cold and soothing and she will get fluids as the cup melts. Also..you can freeze a wet washrag..my kids loved chewing on the frozen cloth..it helped with the pain and itching
My daughter wouldn't take a sippy cup either. Try just a cup with a lid on it with a straw. My daughter loves the straw.
Sorry for your pain. I know that when they hurt, we also hurt. Maybe try a little Motrin. She is old enough for a little dose.
