Hi-
It is most likely the Omnicef. It could take days for the diarreah to stop. Just keep him hydrated.

Does anybody have any experience with Omnicef, in particular, side effects from it?
My 16 month old just finished his 10 day course of it. It seems like the last few days his diarrhea has gotten pretty bad. He did have rota virus, which involves nasty, smelly diarrhea, but that seemed to have started to clear before his ear infection which landed him on the Omnicef. His diapers don't smell like the rota virus ones, but they are pretty loose.
I should also mention that the little guy also cut 2 new teeth during this time.
I am just wondering if anybody else has had this experience or if there is something else going on with my little guy.
Thanks!
Thanks for your responses. I appreciate it. We knew that diarrhea could be a side effect of the meds. I spoke with the DR from the office today and he said that the diarrhea could last a few more days. My little one probably also has a yeast infection, so we are trying to get that under control. I am going to get some of the probiotics too. Thanks for all of your help and suggestions.

Hi C.,
I've been on this before, and so has my son, and it caused the same stomach issues for both of us. The solution was probiotics - helped tremendously. You can get it at most health food stores and at Whole Foods. They even make an infant version of it that is a tasteless powder that you can mix in with any liquid. Good luck!
diarrhea and diaper rash are both common side effects. the pamphlet warns against giving it to children under 2 b/c of the severity of the side effects - my son has been on it twice now (20mo and 23 mo) he had horrible diarrhea for 7 out of the 10 days at least 3 times a day - he needed prescription diaper rash cream - hang in there!
The ped. should have told you right off the bat that this can cause diarrhea, it's one of the main side effects. My daughter was on it, but had no problems. Go to the pharmacy, they sell the probiotic powder over the counter and you can mix in with yogurt and other soft food. The diarrhea could last like a week, I also use the rubber/plastic pants over the diaper when they have this, then it's not all over their clothes every time! Good luck.
That is normal reaction. Both my kids have been on it before and they got loose stool/diarrhea. It also turns like a orange/redish color as well. I have a 4 year old and a 2 year old and they both have gone through it. Good luck and I hope the baby feels better

My daughter was on it when she was about 7 months and I just took it two weeks ago. In both of our cases a reddish colored loose stool plauged us for about a week or so. I had to slather her little bottom with diaper cream (burts bees is the only one that worked for us) every time I changed her. For myself, not only did it upset my stomach it made me incredibly dizzy....so needless to say neither of us will take it again unless there is no other alternative.

My little guy has been on Omnicef twice and both times he ended the 10 day course with about three days of terrible diarrhea. It sounds like that is what is going on with your little guy as well. I would get it checked out if it continues, but my little one's cleared up as soon as the meds were done and I bet that is what will happen with you too. The diaper rash stayed for a little while...

Oh yes - my daughter had an ear infection and the doctor prescribed Omnicef - in 24 hours of the first dose - she had horrible diarheah which looked red and then a horrible diaper rash to go with it. Her tush was fire red. I couldn't even wipe it after she pooped. I had to put her in the tub and wash it off.
Obviously we received a different medication - I will never give it to her again and she if 4 now. When that happened she was under 2
Good luck!
My son finished a round of Omnicef a month ago -but didn't have too bad diarrhea. One thing the pharmacist suggested is to give some probiotics to help with the diarrhea. You can get probiotics (they have some kid-specific probiotics) at Whole Foods or Vitamin Shoppe.
Hi C.`
My daughter was on Omnicef a couple of times and she also had diarrhea as a side effect of it. Actually her diarrhea was an orange color too. I called the doctor and he said it was normal and not to worry. It could be a result of teething too, my first two kids had diarrhea while teething. I would mention this to his pediatrician just incase since he did have the rota virus. I would just try to keep him hydrated. Good luck and hope this advice helps!

igt has soy in it so if your child is allergic to soy dont take it
Sorry to hear about the Rotavirus, my son is just getting over it. His case landed him in the hospital over night. I sure wish I had known about the Rotavirus Vaccine! My son is still having yucky diapers and it's been a week now. My Doctor says the virus can take up to 2 weeks to completely clear up. So there's a very good chance it's still the virus. But when in doubt call your doctor, that's what he/she gets paid for.
Just read your what happened. I used Lotramin AF, an over the counter athlete's foot treatment for my son's yeast infection. That cleared it right up, it took about 2 days.
C., My daughter was put on Omnicef around age 2, she is almost 5 now, and had a horrible reaction to it. She had flu symtoms constantly for 5 of the 10 days we were supposed to be on it. I called the doctor with her reaction and they said, "oh she probably has the flu". When she became lethargic and was laying limp in my arms, I decided to use my momsense and take her off the medicine. With in a day of being off of it, her symptoms subsided.
I have been told that this antibiotic is very harsh on the stomach and should be taken with meals.
My 2nd daughter was put on this antibiotic as well, and she only had loose stools as you were mentioning. I believe this is normal, but when you feel something is not right go with your gut feeling. I hope this helps

My 2 yr old daughter was on Omnicef about a month ago. She had diarrhea too. The paper from the pharmacy said to call the doctor if diarrhea occurs so I did. He said that diarrhea is normal when taking an antibiotic and as long as she wasn't dehydrated she was fine. So I wouldn't worry too much about it. Or at least call the doctor for peace of mind.
Hi C. -
My oldest, now 10 had a nasty reaction when he was 4. He was newly potty trained and had bloody diahrrea from it. Other 2 kids are ok with it but we have listed my 10 year old is allergic.
