10 Month Old with Loose Stool

My 10 month old has been having loose stool over the past few days. (I mean leak out of the diaper and up his back loose). We are currently out of town and not anywhere close to a doctor that we know and trust. He is normal in every other way in that he eats, sleeps, plays, laughs, etc. He has no fever and no other symptoms. He did just have an ear/sinus infection that was treated with Omnicef, but he has been off of that for a 6 days. I don't know if I should seek a doctor here where I am or if it is just a little stomach bug that he picked up. Any thoughts?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Hi Mommies! Thank you for all of the responses and advice. I called around to several doctors (including our own back home) and I was surprised that some of them did not want to see him...they suggested that I just call my doctor back home. I finally got through to our doctor and it turns out that he developed a temporary milk intolerance. We have switched him from Enfamil Lipil to Similac Isomil DF, Pedialyte, BRAT diet and Triple Paste for the diaper rash. So far he has been improving and has not had any diarrhea in the past day and a half. He will remain on this regimin for 5-7 days. Thanks again to everyone.

Bananas, prunes, rice cereal to slow it down and Pedialyte or something similar with electrolytes to stay hydrated. He is teething or maybe is having a reaction with the ear infection. Most babies have loose stools when something else is going on or he is riding out an infection.

Hi D.,

Is he drinking tap water or sucking on ice. I am so sensitive to changes I gave up on anything but filtered water. Just an idea. ~ F.

Hi D.,

Most doctors are trying to not treat ear infections with antibiotics anymore because they have overprescripted them and the ear infection usually does not need it and will heal on its own. Garlic drops are great for next time - look into it.

For now what your son probably needs is probiotics because the antibiotic destroyed all of the 'good' bacteria in the gut. Go to a health food store (whole foods, mothers, henrys) and ask for a baby probiotic. If you are still nursing then you would take the probiotic and have it pass onto him.

As a nutritional doctor who specializes in children's healthcare needs, probiotics are HIGHLY recommended. There have been other responses commenting on probiotics, but none that tell you where to get them. I wouldn't trust yogurt as far as I could thorugh it since many types of yogurt contain High Fructose Corn Syrup. ReNew Life found at WHole Foods Market has a Baby line of Probiotics called FloraBaby. 1/4-1/2 tsp. 2Xday is perfect. Your medical doctor will probably not know what probiotics are or they will tell you feed your child yogurt - can we say mucus? If your 10Mo old continues to get ear infections, seek out a cranial-sacral therapist or chiropractor specializing in infant adjustments.

If your son is not feverish, experiencing a rash of any kind and is not in any kind of noticable discomfort (like bringing his knees to his tummy and crying), I wouldn't worry too much, especiallly since he just recovering from a sinus infection. It's been my experience that my son will sometimes have loose stools after taking medication or just having a simple cold (I think sometimes just their "boogies" or swallowing nasal drip can affect their tummies). Good luck and no worries! I hope your son continues to get well.

Hello, D.,

If you decided to handle your son's ear/sinus infection using an antibiotic recently, you will need to repopulate the flora in his colon. It was completely destroyed from the antibiotic. He cannot produce his own B vitamins (which we all do when we have a healthy colon with flora intact or reestablished), his immune system is compromised, he is certainly prone to loose stools among other things until you repopulate the colon from what the antibiotic has taken from him. Find a good probiotic or contact me if you need help with that.

In the future you may choose to get to the source of an ear or sinus infection which will benefit your son's health significantly and in the long term. Antibiotics deal with symptoms, as you probably already know!

My very best to you,

T.

Hi D.,

Take the time to call your doctors office and ask the nurse to consult with his doctor, to say your not by a doctor you can trust, is silly.. if this continues you will have to trust another doctor 99 % of doctors out there know what they are doing. Your the mom you have resources for the safty of your child, make the call so you and your son will feel better.

Blessings

The Omnicef probably killed all the good bacteria, too. Yogurt, yogurt, and more yogurt. Good luck!

It could be a bug but my son was on Omnicef for 6weeks for a chronic cough and only AFTER we took him off the medicine he got the runs for about 1.5 weeks. His ped. said it was from the medicine and sure enough that was one of the side effects listed for the medicine. SOO it could possible be that. Hopefully, fingers crossed, so that he doesn't have a bug. Does your dr have a 24hr advice nurse line?! you could always call them and ask or call your dr and leave a message for him to call you back.
Good luck.

Well give her stuff like bananas I mean like a whole large one is fine in this case or try baby oatmeal (next to the rice cereal and wic covers it!) or try more iron rich foods or just check the iron in the food you are feeding the child and make sure there is a good amount for the whole day in her system. All of those should work. We also have tried fiber but this can be hard with the age of your child. Also could call the dr if it lasts longer then a week I would say, my daughter had done this a few times. And for her bum LOTS OF AIR! Put her on a vinyl table cloth and air out. :) And butt paste her up if it gets bad.

Good luck.

Hi D.,this can happen if he's teething and at 10months,you can be pretty sure that more teeth are on the way.
Especially the eye teeth are related to the digestion. If he's eating, great,no fever, great. Also if you are breastfeeding it may have been something in your diet that could have set it off too, anything spicy or with onions or garlic.Good luck i'm sure he'll be fine. A.

Sounds like a candida issue. I would try PB8, or another probiotic. This is a classic issue after any antibiotic. We open the capsule of PB8 and dump 1/2-1 capsule into our kid's mouths when they start to get sinus stuff, intestinal issues, ear infections. You should be a huge difference in 2 days.

Dear D.:

If your child is exclusively breastfed, ignore my advice.

But if your child eats food, try a SMALL amount of yogurt with live cultures or chewable (strawberry flavored is good) acidophilus. Both of these methods will cure the diarrhea.

It is normal for a child who has been on this type of antibiotic to experience diarrhea as a result because the antibiotic may have killed off his normal intestinal flora. By using live cultures/acidophilus tablets, you can replace his intestinal flora and end the problem.

When my pediatrician recommended this, I was so happy I never used anything else for my kids. And, of course, the first time they had diarrhea, WE were on vacation too! EEEK!

Best wishes,

M.

Could he be teething? 10 months is prime teething age!!!!I mean loose stools do happen with teething but that sounds really loose. Does he chew on things and dig his fingers in his mouth because loose stools and grinding on things with the mouth are tell-tale signs of teething. Just a thought.

Hi, D..

My 11-month-old daughter just got over a stomach bug in which she had diarrhea for over a week. Luckily, we were home and could take her to the doctor, which really didn't make much of a difference because there isn't any medicine you can give and there isn't anything the doctor can do when they do get sick like this (I wasted $35 for each of two visits I made while she was sick to hear what I am going telling you now).

However, what he did recommend was that we made sure she was properly hydrated, preferably with pedialyte or other electrolyte drink, and that she was on a bland diet (i.e. apple sauce, rice cereal, bananas) because that seems to help with the diarrhea. She had a fever for the first three days of it, so he recommended infant Tylenol.

She was playing like normal, so besides the fever and the diarrhea, it didn't appear like she was sick. Just make sure he's hydrated.

If it goes longer than 10 days and he appears to have lost weight, I think that warrants a doctor visit. If you doubt anything I have mentioned hear, you should just give your son's pediatrician a call.

I hope he feels better soon and you enjoy the rest of your trip!

Good luck!

E.

Hi Debbie, If the loose stool continues after 3 days you must take your baby to see a doctor. Keep the baby well hydrated. It could be some type of flu but just to be on the safe side see a doctor.

GOD bless you

My son went through this about 6 months ago. Here's what we did. It's called the BRATY diet and I got it from "The Baby Book" by Dr. Sears. We limited his diet to bananas, rice (or rice cereal), applesauce, plain toast, yogurt, water, & gatorade (this part was suggested by our ped). We then elimiated all dairy for 48 hours. If you're breastfeeding, continue to do so. It worked great. We also used butt paste to ward off a rash. We've found that is one of the best diaper creams. Good luck!

I had this happen with my one year old a few months ago and was told to stop giving him his formula but give him water to keep him hydrated. Also, have him eat small amounts of bananas, rice, crackers or oatmeal. Basically, food that is easy on the stomach.
It went away in a couple of days. If he doesn't have a fever or cough he probably justgot a little bug.
Hope this helps.

I would call your doctor just in case. The same thing happened to my son, while we were out of town also. Our doctor recommened Immodium for kids. You can cal or talk to any pharmacist on how to give it. Omnicef did give my son loose stools also at a separate time. But I would try something to make sure he doesn't get dehydrated and stays healthy.
