A., every time I have given my daughter Omnicef it has given her diarrhea. Probably 3 different times, and it has taken a little while to get out of her system. Hope this helps.
Have any of you ever given your baby Omnicef? If so, what kind of side effects did he or she experience? I'm having a terrible time getting my daughter over chronic diarrhea. This has been going on for 4 weeks now, and she's not getting any better.
Thanks!

If I am correct Omnicef is an antibiotic and that is what is probably causing the diarrhea. But I would take her to the Dr. if she has had it for that long. My daughter was diagnosised with toddler diarrhea. And had to see a specialist until she was about 3 years old. I really would take her to the doctor and have that checked out. It could be something more serious or if like us something I had never heard of, but required special attention, diet and medicine.
Good luck.
My kids do also get diarrhea from omnicef. I give them lots of yogurt to replace the good bacteria that they need in their stomach. If your child doesn't like yogurt, you can get acidopholus at any health food store in liquid or tabs. I usually start this at the same time as I do the meds, but you can start it now too. I hope that helps you!
If the diarrhea has persisted beyond 7 days of taking the medicine then it is probably something else causing the problem. In my experience most children have fewer side effects with omnicef then some of the others. You may want to see your doctor, remember it is important that your child stay well hydrated so if the diarrhea is severe make sure to supplement with more liquids. Good luck
My son had chronic ear infections before we did tubes. He also had problems with diarrhea and yeast infections. In my opinion, 4 weeks is an awful long time. Check with your dr if you haven't already. There may be something else going on that just happens to coincide with the antibiotic use.
As far as trying to firm up stools, give binding foods, like pasta, bread, bananas. You didn't mention how old your baby is, so this may not be an option for you. If that's the case and your baby is too young for solids, I would definitely follow up with your dr. Diarrhea for little ones under 2 can be dehydrating, not to mention uncomfortable.
Watch out for yeast infections, also. A beefy blood red bottom with broken skin were the hallmark for my son.
Good luck!

My son, who had chronic ear infections when he was younger, was put on Omnicef once. It cost $50, even with insurance ($100 the one time I was put on it as an adult), it did NOT make him better (he still had the infection two weeks later), and he had several side effects, too (including severe upset stomach, diarrhea, etc.). It was the worst antibiotic he's ever been on and didn't even work! We have it in his chart now that we don't ever want it prescribed for him again, and we have refused the prescription of it once by the other doctor in our pediatrician's practice after our experience. Good luck & hope your little one is better soon!
Diarrhea is a side effect. You can try yogurt. That helps with the diarrhea. I hope this helps!
A.,
I personally have not had to give my daughter any type of antibotics but I know people who have had to give it to their kids. Have you tried giving her a mixture of bananas, rice cereal, and yogurt, that combination should help with her diarrhea.
Omnicef is a great antibiotic for certain bacterial infections. Unfortunately it can cause diarrhea. Typically the diarrhea decreases after the course of antibiotic therapy is completed. If your child has continued to have diarrhea, she may have a gastrointestinal infection called Clostridium Difficile. It is diagnosed with a stool sample. This happens when the antibiotic kills all the flora in the GI tract, even the good stuff. The C. Difficile thrives and causes diarrhea. Good luck.

A.,
I've given both my children Omnicef and they love it (contrary to how most kids respond to the chalky taste). I've given it to them as babies and I don't recall any side effects. However, they were not having diarrhea at the time. Hope your baby is better soon.

Diarrhea is part of the antibiotic experience. It's a really good antibiotic though if you can tolerate the diarrhea. My daughters used to be almost red diarrhea. It usually goes away after you stop the antibiotic and if it doesn't then maybe you should see your doctor.
My son has been on Omnicef several times due to ear infections. It has always cleared his problems up quickly. He did have yeast infection a time or 2 with it but I don't recall diarreha. I would definately contact the doctor since he has had it 4 weeks, that seems alwful long time to me.
I remember my 9 year old daughter taking Omnicef when she was little, but it's been too long ago to remember if there were any side effects. My 13 month old is finishing up some Augmentin that is known to cause diarrhea and tummy troubles.
You can ask your pharmacist for Lactinex. It is over the counter, but it has to be refrigerated so you have to ask for it. It comes in a little box of twelve packets of granules for about $13. I don't know how old your baby is, but I mix one packet into my baby's teaspoon of Augmentin in the morning and evening. Give it a minute to dissolve so it doesn't clump up and clog the medicine syringe. My baby's stool has been a little more loose than normal, but she hasn't had any diarrhea or diaper rash from the antibiotics.
They also have Bacid that is the same thing but in a tablet form. We had it when she was on an antibiotic at 4 weeks. It works the same, but you have to crush the tablets for a baby which is a pain. Both of these are kinda like when the doctor tells you to eat lots of yogurt when you are taking antibiotics.
