My husband is a tv repair tech. He says a software update might fix the problem through the usb. Or you might be able to adjust the drives in the service menu. If you can't adjust the drives, it is probably the main board. On a big screen he has never seen the blue and red crt go out. Probably a bad focus block. Big screens last about 15 yrs., flat screens lasts about 4 yrs. If you can find a tech up there that knows what he's doing, it can probably be fixed. His repairs average $200. If you can buy a new tv for that price, please tell me where.

There's a reason it was free...

Sounds like a rear projection problem. A 6 year old flat screen at this point -put it on the curb and try to find a deal on a new tv!

Six years old is it a plasma? If so kick it to the curb, the repairs will be more than a new TV.

Oh, I answered that without my husband though I am sure he will agree with my assessment.

Plasma TVs use gas, eventually the gas needs to be replaced.

Wait, flat? Are you talking rear projection? Kick it to the curb or accept your greener world.

Unfortunately what I found out recently when our 54 inch TV broke down at age 6, it is a dinosaur in the TV age. They are only made to last about 5 years. They didn't even have a repair person trained to work on our TV. Sounds like this one is at the end of its line. We had to pay money to have it removed. I would have liked to have had a neighbor take it away from my home for free.

Plasma or LCD wouldn't turn green like that, so it's probably a rear projection. You have an issue with both the red and blue projection tubes (since there are only 3 tubes, the green one is the only one still working, thus the green picture). It will be way too expensive to fix; it's dead, my dear, you need to get a new one.

That's why it was free.

The color goes out on TVs... 6 years is actually a good "run" for one. Going green, red, or blue is just a sign of an older (5+ years) TV on it's last legs. It may or may not be possible to fix. Our TV broke 4 months ago, TOTALLY fixable... but the repair would have cost more than a new TV. So we got a new TV.

Sounds like your neighbors' friend found a creative way to get rid of their old, broken TV. Our TV is "yellowish" - the color wheel is broken. We were told it would cost around $600 to fix. For a bit more, we could get a whole new, bigger TV, so that's what we're doing.
