Hi Moms! I know there have to be some mom's out here with a minivan. I never ever pictured myself with one, but it seems to be the best option for space and money (and gas too). I am looking to buy a gently used Toyota Sienna or Honda Odyssey. I just can't decide between the two. Just wanted to know your opinions on each of these vans to help with my decision. Thanks so much!!!

What can I do next?

I have never driven a Sienna. I absolutely love my Honda Odyssey! There's so much room, the ride is so smooth, and it looks good with black exterior and tan leather interior. I leased mine from D & M Leasing because it fit my monthly budget better. Drive both. Think about how you would use them on a daily basis. I owned an Accord and then upgraded to an Odyssey with my third child. I never wanted a minivan either, but it is the coolest car I've owned!!

I test drove both and as far as I could tell they both seemed pretty similar in everything. We ended up going with the Honda mostly for reliability and price. Ive had it a year and LOVE it! The automatic doors are great with getting kids in and out and we also got the dvd player for the car. We just got back from driving to sea world and the dvd player was a huge help with keeping the kiddos occupied! We got ours new, but if you do get one used honda has a great certified used car program.
Good luck with whichever you decide!

I don't have either, but would probably consider the Toyota more seriously because we have a 4Runner and the reliability is great. You probably won't be unhappy with either one though. One thing I did see is that Honda had transmission problems with their earlier Odysseys. So if you are considering used, you may want to compare year for year (i.e., comparing an 05 Oddyssey w/an 07 Sienna isn't really comparing the same car).

Here are a couple of links for comparisons:

You may be able to let availability be your choice, if you are buying used. In other words, pick the one that is cheaper and comes from a seller that you can trust. :)

Love love love my Ody!!! We test drove both the Sienna and Ody before buying the Honda. There were several reasons, though I don't remember most. The one I do remember is there seemed to be more overall room in the Ody. The legroom in the Sienna was lacking, even for my 5'6" husband.

I was the same way as you- always had cars or SUV's and had the "I would never own a minivan" attitude. Now, the van is my favorite car I've owned, seriously. I know, it's weird to say, but it's true.

My ex recently bought a used '02 Odyssey and has been disappointed with the gas mileage, which I think he said is around 14mpg. This is worse than our old '02 Pontiac Montana which we liked.

I was a car dealer for 20 years and either van has a great repretation and the breakdown history is very low, so either one you pick you can go wrong with. I have a company that sells extended warranties over the internet & dealers that's why I know the history on those vehicles. If you do decide to purchase I can save you some money on a warranty if you want, about 40 to 50% less than the dealer. I also have interest free financing too. Good luck with your selection.

we have an odyssey it seems like the re-sale (residual)value was beter-- so we could get more bells and whistles for the better price....we went through D&M leasing.

We just bought our second Sienna. We bought the very first one off the block back in 1998. It was great, no major repairs, just regular maintenance. We received $3800 on trade-in, and I do not know how it compares with the Odyssey. Thought about the Odyssey this time, but after reading blogs about their gas mileage, we went with the Sienna, again. McKinney is a great place to shop if you live near. The Toyota and Honda dealers are located off Central Expressway at ElDorado, West, next to each other. I think both are great vehicles.
