Occasional Vomiting in 3 Year Old

So last Sat my son woke up and told me he threw up on the floor. It was just a little and he said he felt fine. He threw up again about 45 min later but it was just a little and again he said he felt fine. The rest of the day he seemed normal..no fever, no pains, not even sleepy. Sunday night (Mon morning) he woke up at 1:30 to come get me because he threw up in bed. But again that was it and he felt fine. He went back to bed and was super hungry in the morning. Tuesday he had one bout of mild diarrhea and has not had a bm since (this is sort of normal for him.he has a BM every 2 to 3 days sometimes longer..but he is not constipated) So this morning 30-45 min. after he ate breakfast he came out of the bathroom to get help getting dressed. I asked what happened and he said he went potty but his breath smelled funny and I asked if he threw up..he said yes and he flushed it down the potty. Has been perfectly normal the rest of the day. So, what could be going on here? I am calling his Dr. on Monday but thought maybe somebody else would have an idea. I think maybe it is acid reflux..oh yeah..he says right before he throws up that the top of his mouth hurts and then "it comes out". This happened also one time while driving in the car in Oct. I thought it was car sickness. But now I do not know.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the responses. He has not vomited in over a week now so I am guessing he had some small bug that lingered. Who knows. He is eating all the same things he has always eaten and seems to be fine.

The other condition that is often times overlooked is lactose intolerance. Are milk products always a part of the equation?

Allergies can also be a factor. Most people think of allergies in the form of rashes or sneezing but they can manifest in other ways. This could be food allergies or reactions to chemicals in the home.

Hello T.,

Actually, my big concern is that you said he normally has a BM every two or three days. Even though you think he is not constipated, this is not normal. A healthy person should go 2 or 3 times a day!!! He is in need of probiotics and perhaps even digestive enzymes. That might solve the other problem that you wrote about.

Three years old is a bit young to be having these problems. Be sure he is drinking enough water (not including any other drinks-juice, soft drinks or soda, anything else doesn't count as water) and getting enough fiber.

If you want any information on any of these things, just get in touch with me. ____@____.com

I hope everything works out and you get to the bottom of the causes. Water and fiber are really important.

Good luck to you and your son,
C.

Could be just a weird virus kids sometimes get. They are not sick sick but the immune system is still down. Other ideas are food sensitivities even to foods he has always eaten. He should be going to the bathroom every single day to eliminate toxins that will otherwise build up in his system and cause other problems. Put him on I-Flora for Kids, it is a probiotic and Benefiber. It will do alot for him. Most kids these days do not have the proper flora in their gut and the probiotic restores it and keeps the immune system strong to boot. Look into what you are feeding him. Watch for high fructose corn syrup, artificial colors, flavors and sweeteners, MSG and genetically modified corn and soy products (which is about 90%)human bodies cannot process these things and his body may be rejecting them. Carefully look at labels. SO many foods sneak things in that parents are totally unaware of, especially aspartame, Splenda and sucrolose. My 2 cents is NO reflux meds. They block CO2 production and starve the brain of nutrients. PLus they have heavy metals which stick right in the brain! I have NEVER known a baby who was on reflux meds that didn't have developmental issues as they started to grow. It is SO related! A starving brain eventually looks like autism, sensory issues, low muscle tone, cognitive impairment, behavior problems, speech/language delays and all the other neurodevelopmental disorders of childhood that is taking over this generation of children.

Sounds like a mild stomache bug to me. My oldest just came down with it and besides the no appetite and occasional vomiting (2x) and few bouts of diarhea, he's also been fine. Separate your toothbrushes, lysol like crazy and keep him on a semi-bland diet til it quits. Also probiotics work wonders to restore healthy balance to the gut. On average it gets our family better about 2-3 days quicker than we would normally. It can also prevent you from catching it.

You should definitely talk to the pediatrician to see what's going on for sure. It could be an illness. I did have a sort of similar experience. When my second son was 3-4 he would randomly throw up at least once a week. Sometimes more. Then he'd be fine. It lasted several months, then suddenly stopped. He's 7 now and that's never happened again. We thought about all sorts of things. Reflux, sinus drainage, allergies, easy gag reflex, attention. But we never did figure it out. And while it was going on, he was perfectly healthy. The pediatrician said nothing was wrong.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but do you think there's any chance he's making himself throw up?

It came to mind only because one time my 3 year old daughter threw up and when I asked her what happened she told me, or actually "showed" me, that she had stuck her fingers in her mouth - too far! What she was doing sticking her fingers in her mouth I don't know because she's not a finger sucker at all - I think she was just experimenting and discovered something that was wierd. To my knowledge she never did it again, though.

Best of luck figuring it out and I hope all is alright with him.

Please take him to a Pedi Gastroenterologist. He could have acid reflux which, if left untreated, is much more serious than people realize it is!!!

Good luck!

he may have food allergies. my daughter is allergic to several things, but it is her allergy to eggs that causes her to throw up. She would throw up and then be perfectly fine. Luckily, we discovered her allergy early on. Maybe he's recently developed an allergy to something he eats often. I believe that could be responsible for his bowels being 2-3 days apart.

it is my 'business'
my mamasource listing:
http://www.mamasource.com/business/14059862321568677889

and so I automatically think of reflux and/or food intolerances- not necessarily allergies, but could be intolerances to PROTEINS like milk protein or soy protein ir nuts or shellfish or legumes (peanut, soy, green beans, etc).

the throwing up AND bowel issues tend to point to something in his diet or lacking in his diet.
probiotics are a good start! go to whole foods and look by the flax seed oil in the refrigerated section and buy some probiotics. give every day until the bottle runs out...

Dear T.,
First a bm every 2-3 days is NOT normal- it may be average, but is no where near normal- the gastro intestinal tract is a closed system- every time we put somethin in one end something should came out the other. Otherwise it is constipation. So he has been suffering from long term constipation which effects the bacterial growth in his intestine.
This impacting of his gi tract may have resulted in his stomach being stuck in his diaphram- this is a chiropractic fix- contact the Int'l Chiropractic Pediatric Assn for a referral for the adjustment to fix this. Usually a very quick fix.
It is not acid reflux- and an antiacid will impair his ability to digest the protien that is necessary for his body to grow- so please don't fall for that one- the drug companies love to get kids started on drugs. See Dr. Bruce West regarding this.(Health Alert)
Perhaps this is a food allergy? Have you changed his food recently? Weston Price. com can help you here.
Of course it hurts- because when he throws up- up come digestive enzymes which don't belong in the mouth.
I have tried to give you enough information so that you can protect him from some of the silly things moms are told.
best, k

Hi T.,

I wanted to note that it might not be acid reflux... for example if he had some other ailment that caused vomiting, he would still say "right before he throws up that the top of his mouth hurts and then "it comes out". "

FWIW we had similar problems in August with three kids here (two visitors and one of our own). We couldn't figure it out until I deduced that they'd all had grapes, and no one else had. The grapes were treated with sulfur dioxide (a mold inhibitor) and it made the kids sick. Who knew?! But that was the first and last time we bought those grapes. ;)

Yes I agree it sounds like acid reflux. I have it & before I started on my meds I would throw up with no warning really. Good luck.
