14 Month Old with Recurrent Vomiting

Hello moms, my daughter started to vomit almost anything when she turned 1yr old and everyday. We've switched from milk to soy to ricemilk without help so not an allergy. We took her to the pediatrician and she suspect acid reflux and prescribed Prevacid chewable tablets which seemed to help. At this visit she didn't gain any weight since her 12month check up (she is petite). My baby despite of the recurrent vomiting, has been a happy girl so the pediatrician wasn't concerned with the weight. I was wondering for those who had to deal with this, how long was your baby on the antacid meds? When we ran out of the 2wk sample prevacid, she started vomiting again. What other advice do you have that helped you cope with it? Was there any natural supplements or foods that helped your baby/toddler? I notice that milk makes her vomit easily, but it's so hard to not give it to her when she cries for it and she needs all the fat she can get. I guess I have to distract her and give her something else? I am on the watch for dehydration and try to give her pedialyte but she doesn't like it, any suggestions of fluids that are helpful (is vitamin water and gatorade okay). Please help my vomiting precious baby:(...and a concerned mom (I don't want her to get worse).

So What Happened?

Thanks so much ladies for all the support, concerns, advice, and tips! I feel so lucky to be part of this network of mommies! It's been about 4 days that my baby hasn't been vomiting. I think she gained a pound:)..has slept through the night again for the last 2days, and she looks healthy and cheery again - phew! She is on prevacid still and I've stopped giving her whole cows milk which helped tremendously. I'll try to get the BioGala probiotics and ween her off of the prevacid in 10days and see how she does.

I don't know what started the acid reflux, but when she turned one, she started to have vomiting bouts off and on, and than it got worse. She also started to be more irritable, needy during the day, and woke up a couple times a night (she was a good sleeper before that-12hrs through the night). I noticed she vomited mostly with whole cow's milk but not all the time (which confused me). By the time I contributed it to cow's milk her esophagus/stomach was so weak, she started to vomit with anything (which again confused me). I suspect she has some sort of cow's milk intolerance (and not allergy). I do give her regular yogurt, and icecream sandwiches, cheese, and she does fine with that luckily.

I did take her to a chiropractor for an adjustment as well. I know a trusted one, and she reassured me it's a common problem and she adjusts babies for that. We'll be going to our pediatrician in 4weeks for her 15month check and talk to her regarding allergy tests. If she starts to vomit again after we take her off of prevacid, than we'll look into something more serious. Will update if anything new comes up, but open to more advices! Much, much thanks to all! H.

Have you tried goat milk? I've heard it's much easier to digest than cow's milk for babies . . .

Good luck!

My Ped told me that all babies have some level of acid reflux because their digestive tracks are so short at this age. She recommended me continuing to burp her after a year old to help with the gas. It worked for us. I hope your baby feels better soon:)

Dear H.,
I would suggest you take her to the chiropractor. I have had lots of success with any ailments my daughter has had. She has been going since she was about 2 weeks old and is now almost 2 1/2. We have managed to avoid most of the childhood things people mention on this site with the exception of a cold here and there. I actually get sick more than she does and she goes to child care. :) I also know with active babies/toddlers they have lots of bumps and their spines get out of alignment which can affect the efficiency of how their little bodies work. I wish you the best as you try to find a solution for your daugter.
God Bless! :)

It could be that your daughter has a physical reason for vomiting. It's great that the Prevacid is helping. Don't stop taking it. Go back to the doctor and let him know what has happened, report back with the effectiveness of the drug. Ask if they can run tests to see what is causing the problem. A baby usually doesn't just start vomiting that can be controlled with an antiacid without some underlying cause.

As for her not wanting to eat, she's old enough to associate eating with throwing up and it's painful. If she has that much acid in her system to cause the vomiting, it hurts alot!! So, it's another reason to make sure she gets her medicine. It will take some time for her to regain her trust about eating and drinking, but it will happen.

Again, go back to her doctor to follow up and find out 'the why'.

Take good care!

Hi,
Even if she doesn't have a milk allergy, she could be allergic to something else. The reflux medicine would help, but it won't get rid of the root cause if it is from something she eats on a regular basis. I would have her blood tested for allergies and also consider doing what's called a Vega test, which tests for food sensitivities (as well as for allergies, but they don't differentiate which are which) and is administered by a Naturopathic Physician (ND).
Good luck, this must be stressful for you :(

hello, My son had the same issue, he would throw up anything and everything, just depended on the day and time, but we knew it was coming so we were always prepared. I finally had a break down in the doctors office, when he finally threw up in front of the nurse. Doctor saw my frustration before, and now he could really see it first hand, so he sent us to a doctor that dealt with it, for the life of me can't think of his specialty anyhow, he ordered a barium xray and when he got the results he ordered prevacid every day for 3 months. He explained it that by taking it every day for those 3 months it heals my baby's esophogis(sp) and then not causing the vomiting. It helped, and he hasn't thrown up since, unless he is sick. Every once in a while he will get a little indigestion, heartburn, but not very often, if we watch what he eats, and drinks.
I will warn you the barium xray is a very tramatic experiance for me as a mother and for my son, he used to love to go see his doctor, and he is ok untill the nurse comes in and then the doctor.. loves his doctor but not getting checked.
I belive he suffers from Post Tramautic Stress Syndrome, because of the xray. But dealing with that vs. throwing up everyday, is better for us all around.
I wish you the best of luck.
My son is now 3, and he stopped throwing up for a year now.

Both my girls had acid reflux but only the younger one was put on medication for it. She was on the medication for about a year and then it just cleared up. Milk was the worst on both their little tummies, especially in the morning. Now they are older and there are no issues at all.

Some people suggested allergies, if nothing comes up on an allergy test then they are NOT allergic, a systemic reaction that can cause swelling, itching, rashes, and anaphlaxis (swelling of the airway). People often call an a intolerance to food an allergy. Intolerance can mean vomiting, diarreah, and intestinal tract issues. I call out the difference because in an emergency situation the treatment for an allergic reaction is very different and could harm someone who is not allergic. My daughter IS allergic to both peanuts and tree nuts, so I've had a lot of experience in this department.

Bottom line, you need to take her to an allergist to determine what is happening, the pediatrician is not a specialist in this area. Should she not have an allergy, then you and your pediatrican can decide how best to determine what it is. An internal medicine specialist perhaps? But it is very normal for a child to have acid reflux (I had it while pregnant and threw up every day from it throughout the pregnancy) when they are young, at least in my family.

Good Luck.

Time to go to a different doc. And I think they have specialists in gastroenterologist for babies. I have acid reflux and it does not feel good, let me tell you. And your baby should not be suffering. She should also be gaining a bit of weight.

You need to get her to a PEDIATRIC GASTROENTEROLOGIST. I HIGHLY recommend Dr Lind Muir at Swedish Children's Hospital in Seattle. I travel there every few months to see her for my daughter. Her office # ###-###-#### If you see her, tell her Kendra & Jaxxon recommended you. She knows us very well.

Gatorade has a lot of sugar in it. Some vitamin waters do too. Have you tried different flavor pedialyte? Have you tried pedialyte popsicles? Have you tried pediasure for nutrition? Pediasure is also lactose free.

H.,

A friend has a baby with reflux and she took him to a chiropractor. It sounds so strange, but she said that it has really helped. I don't know anything more about it, but I'm sure that you can find some info online. She lives here in Portland, so there must be someone locally who deals with little ones. The other suggestion is go give her a probiotic. Yogurt is good, but there are some drinks or supplements made for kids that have a stronger concentration of probiotics.

Good luck.

My son had reflux (really bad) we used the meds too but also switched to probiotics-- You have to get really good ones or they don't work-Here is the link for the product we used- they will ship to your door
Here is the article and the link for BioGaia below.

http://www.childrensprobiotics.com/faq.aspx
Called BioGaia

Have you tried foods like mashed potatoes or Sweet potatoes
or pumpkin are soothing to the tummy.

Besides the probiotics you can try a yogurt with high fat content to fill her up if she will take it.

I was wondering why she started vomiting at age 1 yrs?

I would get a second opinion.
I hope others have helpful suggestions too

Try whole milk yogurt instead of just plain milk. You can add water to make it the consistency of milk if that helps her, but yogurt has the good active bacteria that should help her system. If you do dilute it with water, that will also help her get the hydration she needs in a really simple form that her body can readily ingest. Avoid juice for now since some have a high acid content that will make her reflux worse, and some are so sugary that they might encourage her vomitting too. Water is really the best fluid for her if she's no longer breastfeeding or on formula.

You need to have her tested for other allergies. She may have a wheat allergy or something. I would get a second opinion if your doctor isn't looking into other things that could be causing this. good luck.

You do need to find out why the acid reflux! My daughter is both highly "allergic" to dairy and all gluten. Non of this shows up on any testes in her case but I know for she actually passes out and then vomits for hours if she gets dairy. I her case it is intolerance to certain proteins, Protein Enteropathy, and that is not an allergy that shows up anywhere. This can show up in varying degrees. Also look into Celiac.

Homeopath might also be helpful.

good luck

Some things set off Acid reflux. Watch for tomato sauces, citrus and milk products. Don't forget that butter, icecream, etc are made from milk. My babies got really bad when fed anything made from cream. Cheese and yogurt wasn't as bad. Also there is something in granola and sometimes bread (I haven't figured that one out yet) Definately make a note what upsets her the most. Sometimes it takes a day before they get fussy so go back a day and see what she ate. Good Luck. One more thing, pedialyte pops for the freezer seem to be the most baby friendly.

Does she vomit while she's eating or randomly? My son has always had a super weak gag reflex and used to puke daily for one reason or another (crying, eating, coughing, etc). You should try other milk substitutes or put her back on formula/breast milk if she can't tolerate cow's milk. You might try an allergist too if it doesn't seem like a gag-reflex issue.

I would also strongly advise trying probiotics. My sister's son had severe acid reflux, and he was able to go completely of his medication after taking them for awhile. Also, find a good naturopath who can test for allergies and food sensitivities and help you find the right probiotic
