Nose Bleeds and Blacking Out?

My son is 14 years old. He has frequent nose bleeds in the past but just the other day he said he kind of got lightheaded. He said everything got dark and then had a terrible headache from his temple and around the back of his head. It's been a week since it happened, he hasn't had any other incidence since. I was wondering if anyone else had that happen?

What can I do next?

Are you just waiting on him to drop dead before you decide it's time to see a Dr?

Why on earth are you asking such a thing on a forum of strangers?

You should have seen a Dr a week ago when it happened unless you are ok with the consequences of no medical care. Geesh....

Did he lose quite a bit of blood? That can cause a person to be lightheaded and have a headache.

Personally, if it was me, I'd take my son in. Better safe than sorry. Then you'll know.

Welcome to mamapedia!

I don't know why ANY MOTHER would rather go to an internet board instead of taking her son to the doctor. This is NOT normal. The MINUTE he said 'everything went dark and terrible headache"???!!! He and I would be in the car on the way to the ER. Period. End of story.

Your son needs to be seen by a doctor. There are many reasons this could be happening. I'm not a doctor. And even if I were? I wouldn't diagnose your son over the internet.

My daughter had nose bleeds after eating chocolate or drinking caffeinated drinks (to include iced tea). She had her nose cauterized 4 times by the time she was 12.

Sweet mother of God. Get your son to the doctor! NOW!!

Umm.. what they said.

My son gets migraines about once a year, most often due to growth spurts, and not enough sleep, etc.

This is completely something I would take him in for an appointment. I would t have waited a week, especially if it's something unusual.

First, a visit with the Dr. to eliminate any medical cause is necessary.

If all is fine medically, one thing you can do at home is make sure there humidity level in your house is appropriate. You should also encourage him to keep hydrated with lots of water.

All my best.

You really need to get him to the doctor. This isn't normal and he needs TESTS done. (CT scan or MRI). DO NOT just let this go.

My son gets bloody noses...a lot unfortunately. He even has had the blood come out his eyes because it backed up. I can say that this freaked out the nurse at school. This in itself is not unusual and he has a bleeding disorder. He also gets migraines. However, a bloody nose especially if it lasts more than a minute or so, accompanied by a really bad headache/migraine and everything going dark is a doctor visit.

I will say that this is time of year bloody noses increase for us. We increase vitamin C. It does help.

I go with my gut on things and a lot of stuff I wait on. What you describe would have merited an immediate appointment. Same day, if possible. He needs testing.

There are many reasons for frequent.frequent . nose bleeds. I had them through the elementary school years. My parents took me to the doctor to find out what caused them. I suggest you need to do the same.

The membranes in my nose were thin which caused nosebleeds when my nose was dry or the weather was hot. I don't remember getting dizzy or having my vision go black as the result of nose bleeds. I've had both happen without neccesarily knowing what caused them. The dizziness, black vision, head ache could be a coincidence. Dehydration and hunger can cause those symptoms. So can locking one's knees. There could be a serious medical condition too. I suggest your son needs to see a doctor.

Later: I now remember I would faint with a nose bleed in 1st. - 4th or 5th grade.

Both my nephews experienced this while growing up, right around that age too, 13-15ish...
They both were seen multiple times, we had a great pediatrician team & they are both fine healthy kids.

We thought:
Low iron? Watch the diet, up the red meat, stay healthy.
When we think bloody noses we think my cousin S, she's diabetic, juvenile diabetes runs in my family & we worried about it with all the kids but they are all fine, like I said.
Migraines? We get them, is it a part, who knows, could be?

You can talk with the doctor and let them know, they'll run some basic tests 'for peace of brain' (Major League Movies, lol sorry) Peace of mind!

~My oldest just turned 13 & the stomach & headaches have started, only one bloody nose so far in his sleep. I think it might just be a thing to watch and know about for some? I'm not really sure, I just know it's shown up as a pattern in my family.

After seeing your regular doctor I would also make an appointment to see a headache specialist. Ask your doctor what neurologist he recommends who can help with getting to the bottom of this. Saying everything got dark is what worries me.

Ask his doctor to evaluate him, and consider a specialist who deals with headaches, migraines or neurological issues. The nosebleeds may or may not be related - do you have a cause on those? Allergic inflammation can be part of it, but there are other possible causes. If he's had them frequently, I assume you've mentioned them to the pediatrician. An ENT should take a look up in there at those nasal tissues to see if there's an obvious source of irritation.
