Nook, Sony eReader or a Kindle

I really want some form of electronic reader for Christmas. I don't know which is the best one though. They are all somewhat comparable in price. We don't have WiFi, but it would be easy enough to buy a wireless router. I have a love of reading, and my book collection is slowly but surely taking over my house! I don't use the library very much, since I re-read my books over and over again. Not to mention, I'm horrible about returning them on time!
I would love to hear some customer reviews from REAL people! Thanks Mommies :)

I've done research on this on my own. Skip the sony e-reader. They are cheaper but selection of books is smaller in comparison to the other two. Between the Kindle and Nook, it's a personal preference.

Kindles are great and people swear by them, but a) they actually have less books b) plus the kindle 2 does not have the ability to expand memory (SD card) BUT the refresh (page turning) is faster.

The Nook (for me..and not Nook Color that just came out) is the best choice..a) you can add an SD card to hold more books b) prices are comparable to Amazon for e-books and they have tons of titles, c) Book lending feature is a plus. The software for B&Ns e-reader works on iPhone, PC and Android phones..you can transfer back and forth. They are working on an upgrade to the software so that it keeps tabs of the page you were on if you decide to read your book on your laptop vs. your nook.

My daughter and I read the same type books and she already has her nook. The lending feature would be great for us (not have to buy the book twice).

IF you can afford it, go for a reader with 3G+wireless. I know it's an extra 30-40 bucks..but think about being able to download your book anywhere...instead of waiting until you can find a wi-fi hotspot.

Oh..one thing about the nook vs. kindle, the nook only downloads within continental u.s. So if you are planning to travel out of the US, you'd have to get your books loaded before your trip. Kindle works internationally.

Hope I didn't bombard you with too much info! I'm a geek at heart and always research my tech gadgets. I'm getting my nook for Christmas (well my DH said I can get it sooner).

I know people who got a kindle and absolutely love them..so like I said, it's your personal preference. I already have a membership to B&N ($25/year) so I get better discounts on books...

I have a nook and I absolutely love it, love it, love it! In addition to what the other nook owner said above, there are also "free Fridays". Every Friday B&N offers a free book. I've read some titles I wouldn't have otherwise chosen. There are tons of free and low cost books you can take your nook into the Barnes & Nobles store and read additional titles for free while there. I have the 3g + wireless, hubby got it for my bday (great guy!). It has a color touch screen, a browser ( has to be in wifi setting), a music player, and games. You can read a free sample of each book and can also lend books to other nook owners ( and borrow from them). It has expandable memory, good battery life, and frequent software updates- they are very responsive to what nook owners want. Get the nook you won't be sorry. I had wanted a kindle before I even knew what a nook was and I am so glad I got this instead.

I love my Sony eReader, I use it daily. I got it last year for Christmas. However, if I had to do it all over again, I would spend the extra $100 and get the Apple iPad. It's an eReader, but it has a lot more functions that I would get more use out of. What I love about the eReader, which would be available I think on all of them, is that you can check with your local library and you can electronically check out books. I've had it for over a year, and probably only bought 10 books, but I easily have read 75+.

I have a Kindle and absolutely LOVE it. And saying that, I am biased, as I don't know anything about the other readers, but have never had any problems with my Kindle. Super fast downloads, 3G, and it also syncs to my iPhone. Like I said, I don't have any experience with the other readers, but the Kindle also lets you turn the page with your left or right hand (that helps when nursing or holding a baby or kid). The other readers may have that capability too, so that might not be impressive. Good luck and you'll enjoy whichever reader you get. I don't miss paper at all!!

I got a Kindle last year for Christmas and I adore it. I did quite a bit of research before deciding that Kindle was what I wanted, but that was 12 months ago, so I'm sure much of my info is out of date, and I can't really comment on the other two.
I find the Kindle really simple to use. Its it easy to download books and there is a wide selection of free or really inexpensive books on Amazon. I have also downloaded a few audio books. I like that the Kindle also syncs with my droid phone and my computer so I can pick up reading anywhere I happen to be. The battery life is good, and I think has gotten even better in the latest generation if I'm not mistaken.
Good luck with your decision.

I would go with the Kindle, the price for the basic model has dropped considerably and you can choose between different models some of which have all the bells and whistles. Also Amazon has great customer service!

Now the nook, I have not tried - BUT I just recently had a terrible experience with B&N tech support for their enook-program for the computer. TERRIBLE customer service. AWFUL! The people had no idea how their product works and got rude in the process. I will never buy ANYTHING B&N again.

I may not be much help because I don't know anything about the others, but I have a Kindle and I LOVE it. It runs off of Amazon's free whispernet, so I am thinking that you would not need to get a wireless router. I downloaded a book to my Kindle in seconds in the car out in the middle of nowhere on 1-20 in West Texas. I know some of them have color now and touch screens etc. I use my kindle strictly for reading and my cell phone for all that other stuff. I would look at book selection before making a purchase, some of them offer more than others and it sounds like you are an avid reader and would want to have a large purchasing selection. A year ago when I got mine, Amazon offered the biggest selection of books, but I guess all of that could have changed.

I purchased the Kindle not too long ago. I love it! I bought a jacket for it where you can attach a night light to it and it makes it great for night time reading. Amazon has a huge selection of FREE books that are out of copyright (mostly pre 1923). There are alot of great classics out there to be read for free. I got the lower priced one because I do not need wi-fi on the go. You can go to Amazon's site and compare the difference between the two models to see what would fit your lifestyle the best. I prefered the Kindle because it actually has the keyboard on it, versus the other models where the keyboard will pop up on the screen. I can't type well on keyboards that are on the screen. Good luck!
