Is there an extended warranty that you can use to purchase a newer version?I would be upset too not lasting another yr. or 2.
I have a 2-year-old Nook 1st edition. It suddenly wouldn't turn on or take a charge so I called Barnes and Noble. They said it could be one of three things: 1) Needs a new battery, 2) needs updated software, or 3) is just at the end of its life span. I put in a new battery and it took a charge, which was an improvement, but it still won't turn on. Next I plan to take it in to see if the softward needs to be updated. Has this happened to anyone else? Do these devices really have such a short life span? I've used it moderately--not what I would consider a lot and didn't expect it to "die" so soon.
Bummer about the problems. It might actually be a 2nd edition, but based on my description over the phone they thought it was 1st edition. I haven't had a chance to bring it in yet because I've been sick. I don't have an extended warranty, but they do have some sort of trade-in policy.
It is a 1st edition and they do have a history of problems. I did not know. It has a new battery and has been to the store and has updated software. The problem is the drive where you insert the charger is loose/broken and doesn't charge well. I have temporarily revived it, but will probalby be trading it in for a Simple Touch Glowlight. Thanks all.

1st Gen Nooks are prone to having problems. Did you have an extended warranty that still covers it? If so, ask that it be replaced.
I had problems with my 1st edition also (unit would freeze up). After trying some tricks that I read on the internet (remove the battery and hook up to the charger without the battery installed) that worked for a while, I called customer service and they sent me a new battery for free. That worked for a while, then started having the same issues again. Called customer service again and they sent me a free 2nd edition Nook. They did that with no hassle or anything. Totally happy with new Nook, haven't had one issue with it. I think that they know they have issues.
