Night-time Breathing Problems for Adults!

ok- so my husband can't breath at night. He is mostly fine all day long, but at night... has to breath through his mouth. He doesn't snore or anything, but his mouth dries out so badly that he has to wake up to drink water. Then because he drinks so much water, he gets up to pee every other hour.

His nose isn't all mucusy, I guess it is more of a swollen thing. He is a healthy person in a great weight range.

He has tried saline nasal sprays, which will help about half the time, and breathright nasal strips- which barely helped.

any other suggestions? Should we put a humidifier right in his face?

What can I do next?

I used to have trouble breathing through my nose. I had to sleep with my mouth open too and I always woke up with a sore throat because of it. I was also tired all the time because I wasn't sleeping well. My problem was due to a deviated septum. I went to an ENT and ended up haivng a septoplasty. My ENT initially looked at my nose and said that my septum didn't look that bad but he decided to send me to get a CT scan anyway (I think to just shut me up). He was surprised when he saw the results because my septum was deviated further up and he couldn't tell just from looking at my nose. He immediately suggested surgery. I can't believe how much better I sleep now and it's so nice be be able to breath through my nose (with my mouth closed).

It might be worth a visit to the doctor. He could have sleep apnea. and if that is the case they might suggest a CPAP machine that would help him breathe.
Advil might help with swollen nasal passages, but I really think a doctor could offer better suggestions. They will probably ask to do a one night sleep study where they will monitor him and quickly be able to pinpoint the problem and find a solution.
Good luck to you both. I know it is exhausting!

***Edit*** I just looked back at a couple of your other posts and saw that your DH isn't too keen on visiting the doctor. I'm kind of the same way, but when it comes down to sleeping or not sleeping, I will go! I hope you are able to find some good solutions for him so you can both get a little rest!

He probably has a deviated septum but he might get relief from taking a hot steamy shower before bed, then flushing out his nasal passages with a neti pot or NeilMed Sinus Rinse (all OTC at Walgreens or where-ever). Maybe take a Sudafed before bed? He probably needs to see a doctor, though!

Could it be dry mouth? I have that so I can understand what you are going through. Here are some things that have helped me. Yes I do have a humidifer right next to me at night. But next time you go shopping look at the mouth washes. I use biotene...they have a long line of mouth care for dry mouth. Also, it might be something to bring up with the dentist. Sometimes thye can write a RX to help with dry mouth. Also a little buckwheat hunny or some watter with a bit of cucumber in it could also help.
Blessings
