Hi Jennifer - You actually have two things to decide: what motor to use and who will install it.
I replaced my garage door motor in Feb. 2007 when the one that came with the house suddenly quit working, so I didn't have the luxury that you are lucky to have of conducting research in advance to decide these things - I just called around and pretty much took whoever was the first company that could get to my house and replace it. The "winner" was a company called Allied Garage Door out of Villa Park, which is pretty far from where I think you are (Round Lake?), but their website at www.allieddoor.com suggests that they work all over Chicagoland.
I don't remember whether I had choices about what motor to use, but Allied sold me a 3/4 horsepower motor from Liftmaster and did a fine job installing it. In addition to being a very quiet motor, it also has an "electric eye" that will stop the door from going down if anything gets in its path. I don't know if that's standard on every door nowadays, but I would think that anyone with young children would want that feature.
I recently experienced a problem where the electric eye didn't seem to be working 100%, so I called Allied, and they said it would be an $89 service call, plus parts and labor, if they came out to fix it since they only warrant their work for a year. As I called around to other garage door installation and repair companies, some said that if they had installed the door, they would come out and fix the problem for free no matter how long ago they did the installation. Just something to maybe look for when you call around to select who will install your door.
Fortunately though, I was able to call Liftmaster's customer support number, and the representative was able to walk me through how to easily fix the problem (i.e., cleaning the electric eye with Windex). So as you select the motor, you might also want to look for one made by a company with accessible customer support.
Good luck,
L.
