Help! Garage Door....

Hi all, I am a woman that gets in her car and drives...and as long as the car is rolling, I'm fine! The same goes for my home. Here's what I need to know...my garage door will not open, the motor (or battery) is running, but the garage door will not go up or down. Does this require a repair man, or is there a red button to push?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for the responses. I tried some of them and of course, they did not work! It turns out that the gears in the motor are worn out. So, either I need to get another one or get new gears???????

Sheila, there's a little rope hanging down in about the middle of the chain - pull on the rope and see if the latch goes up If the latch goes up then push the opener again and the door automatically will engage to the chain.

If that doesn't wrk then maybe you need a repair man.
Hope this helps - I asked my hsband and these were the directions he gave me.

Good Luck S.

There's a wheel with teeth on it. If you try everything else and it doesn't fix it then the wheel probably needs to be replaced and greased.

Good luck.

I asked my hubby and this is what he says... :)

there is usually a release cord that you can pull down on and disengage the door, if that is moving back and forth when you try to open the door, then you do need to reengage that, usually by pushing it up where the rope attaches

if that is not moving, but the garage door opener is making noise, then it may need to be looked at. one thing you can do, is pull that release cord and see if your door opens normally (albeit by hand), if it does open, then it's a problem with the garage door opener, if it doesn't open and is stuck (even when the rope is disengaged) then there is something wrong with the door or track, look for broken pieces or something that is jaming it

Please let me know if this helps :)

It might be that you lost a spring. This is an inexpensive fix. We use Raynor for our repairs. You could always call them and see what they think it might be. They are very straight forward and honest and will help you troubleshoot over the phone if needed.

Try pulling up on the door when you click it and see if giving it an extra boost doesn't help? I've backed into our garage door twice now (I've never parked in a garage until now, and with 2 arguing kids sometimes well... I get distracted hehe) Anyhow, my Dad's had to put it back on the tracks after I've knocked it off. Sometimes it goes up just fine on it's own, sometimes I have to pull the handle attached to the door and give it some extra oomph! Like the other said, check the sensors as well, and make sure everything looks all right. Call around before you settle on one place to fix it. Some places will at least do free estimates! Also who installed it might be cheaper or whatnot... Good Luck!

did you check to see if someone ma have accidentally locked the door? That happened to us before when our brother-in-law was watching our house and he thought it was left unlocked. He didn't have a garage door opener and didn't realize it had to remain in the unlock position.

don't know for sure but it sounds like the gears on the motor are worn off or broken. we had the same problem and could have gotten replacement parts if the opener wasn't so old but ended up having to get a new opener.

Is the emergency chain pulled / disengaged. Automatic garage door openers have a release mechanism so that you can open the door when the power goes out.

You need to call a repair guy - sounds like a connection is messed up. If you have sensors....make sure they are lined up with each other, this also will keep it from operating correctly. Good Luck!!

Check the emergency release (the rope that hangs down). It's probably unhooked from the chain. Just reattach it and it should work. I did the same thing the other day. Good luck!

Hmmm...what kind of opener is it? Is it a chain drive or a belt drive? It sounds to me like you maybe just slipped or broke the chain or belt. If it just slipped, you'll need to fit it back over the pulleys, and if it broke, you'll need to replace it. I can't really go into more detail than that. I will say that garage door openers are not all that complicated, so a handyman neighbor or relative would most likely be able to help you figure out your issue. Good luck!

There may be something blocking your sensor of the Garage Door. Move things away from the bottom of the garage door sensor, and then you may have to hit a reset button, give that a try, that happens to us all the time and that is what we do to fix it. C. F

I'm sorry if this doesn't sound very technical, my husband took care of it so I have only a basic understanding of what happened. There is a rope or chain that came off on ours and ended up needing the connection fixed. It was located at the motor and was what pulls the door up. He found it by just looking at the way everything was attached.

Make sure that some one has not locked it manually and that the wheels have not jumped the track. That is all I can think of.... Good luck, E.

Hi Sheila,
I've had that happen a couple times. First check your sensors (the motion detectors on either side of your garage that keep the door from coming down when your car is in the way. If those are not aiming right at each other, the door will not close or open. There are wires connected to those as well, just make sure those have not come loose. Another option is to adjust the knobs on the opener itself. There should be a red button and a white knob. The red button resets it, and the white knob adjusts--you can play around with the white knob gradually and see if the door will open. Hope that helps! If not, then call the repair guy.

The same thing happened to our door (unfortunately it was my fault!), and my husband says our opener will have to be replaced. It burnt the gears on ours. Hopefully with yours it's just a chain that is loose or something, but...If it does have to be replaced, I think it's about $200-$300 or so.

IT's not a red button but it might have a red handle :) The door may be "off the track". THere is a string that hangs down from the motor. You pull it, and I don't remember the details but it seems like I pushed the opener and lined everything back up>?

Before you call that repairman, find the sensor (usually somewhere near the bottom of the door), and dust it off.
One time my dad thought he was going to have to call a repairman for his door, but someone told him the sensor that senses if a child or pet is running under the door, can get dirty and then the door won't work. Sure enough it had a spider web covering it. He dusted that off, and the door worked fine.
Of course you can't get that lucky every time, but it is worth the try.
Next, try calling in a gentleman friend or relative. Sometimes there is a rope or chain attached to a sort of locking device that can accidentally lock. Pulling this rope will free it up.
If all else fails ...... then, call the repairman, but do check around, and ask about prices and references.

Better call a repairman. It's probably the chain that pulls up the door.

Please narrow down the problem:

Step 1. Examine the door's springs. You will have one
of two types:

A.:Expansion springs should be fully extended when
the door is down. If not, then one is broken and
needs to be replaced.

B.: Torsion springs OVER the top of the door can break
and free-wheel on the bar that goes through them.
Use short step ladder and flashlight to look for a
break in either spring.

If you find a broken spring then call either Raynor Garage Company or Overhead Door Company to replace them. (Always replace both springs at the same time.)

Step 2. Release the door with the rope. The 'trolley' will disengage from the chain or screw drive. The door should be free to lift manually. This should not be too difficult if both springs are adjusted properly. (My 80-lb. mother can do it!) You should be able to stop the door at about 2/3 the way up and it will stay. It it sinks, or raises more than a few inches up or down, it is not "in balance" and you need to call a professional.

Step 3. With the door down and the trolley still disengaged, run the door opener. The trolley should move down the track freely and return when you push the button the second time. If doesn't move smoothly or at all, then the gears in inside the door opener are stripped and it needs to be replaced. (Not all have gears, some have a pulley outside the case, check to be sure there is a good belt around both pulleys.)

Also look for any knob of button labeled "UP Force" and turn it slightly in the direction indicated for better lifting. This is a clutch adjustment and it may need to be tightened from time to time as the clutch wears. Older models require wrenches to adjust the clutch.

I hope this helps.
