This might sound a little silly, but I was wondering if any of you moms have had any trouble with a newly crawling baby falling over and hitting their head a lot? I know that when babies start to become mobile they hurt themselves often, and yes my home is babyproofed...the problem I'm having is my son, almost 8 months, just started crawling about 2 weeks ago and he falls over and hits his head on the floor multiple times a day. We have hard wood floors in most of the house and rugs down but it seems like he hits pretty hard. I just am worried that it will do damage or something if he hits his head like this continuously. Maybe Im being paraniod but it just seems like it cant be good for him. Id appreciate any feedback! Im going crazy trying to think of ways to stop him from hitting his head so much while he's exploring his new found ability! :] Thanks to all who take the time to read and respond.

What can I do next?

My son fell and bumped his head alot while crawling; I believe it's normal. I said that God must make their heads tougher cause he still loses balance while walking and falls and hits his head. He hit his head alot in the crib too, so I guess it's normal. IF you are really concerned, you can always call your ped for backup but I wouldn't worry about it since your house is babyproof.

Jen, my 9 y/o son bumped his head so many times and I was just as concerned as you are. The good news-he is advanced academically for his age. He doesn't hit his head so much any more, but did get a concussion when hit with a baseball right in the middle of his forehead (even left the baseball stitch marks). He is a boy and he does get hurt a lot more than my two girls did. My oldest was 12 y/o and playing with my son who was a month. She lifted him above her head and said "What is that noise?" We had low ceilings and the fan was lightly hitting his head! Oh the stories I could tell you-LOL! Honestly, don't be concerned unless your son shows a sign of change such as increased clumsiness, difficulty staying awake, vomiting.etc. Also, whenever in doubt, take him to the pediatrician. You may feel like a fool if there is nothing wrong, but at least your mind will be at ease.

Jen,
I had to laugh (sorry) when I read your post b/c it reminded me of the time I asked my son's pediatrician "exactly how many times can they CONK their heads--hard--before they get some kind of damage?" He just kind of laughed and said that it what a skull does--protects the head....My son was usually cracking his head on a table/wall.etc.
That said, do you think he has enough upper body strength to support himself? He will build more as he crawls over time but it' going to be the crawling (and, unfortunately, conking) that does it. Maybe you could practice him gently pulling up from sitting as a way to build some neck/arm strength?
Also, don't you just always find that no matter how hard you try to think of everything you can do/arrange/encourage to keep them from getting hurt--it always happens any way--usually the O. thing you didn't think of?
If you're really concerned, you could always mention it at his 9 mo. check up.....

Hi Jen

My youngest is 7 months old, and he is constantly whopping his head too. It seems he rolls into everything as he is now crawling yet. It sounds like your little guy is just still a bit clumsy. I wouldn't get too worried about the head bumps. I know as mother's we are designed to try and stop all forms of injury to our babies but it doesn't sound very serious and he will get more coordination and control the more he practices! PS - he has a really cool name!!

Jen,
Relax, you're being just a bit too paranoid (LOL)! Kids have BIG heads--if your head were almost 1/4 of your body mass and you were figuring out how to support yourself on new muscles for the first time, you'd be falling over a lot, too! His head is only a few inches from the floor and so falling isn't going to dent that skill too much :)

This is a good site for what to expect your child to be able to do at various ages from birth to 3 yrs; he's right in there for crawling, so just relax, be there if he gets upset by anything, and otherwise enjoy watching (and cuddling).
Best of luck!
