My husband and I are unexpectedly expecting. The only problem is that we got rid of ALL our baby stuff. Any suggestions on where to get the necessities cheap? We are barely scraping by with our son.

What can I do next?

You can go to Emergency Pregnancy Service. They have a program that through pregnancy education you can earn points towards free baby items that you choose.
Hope this helps.

Congradulations! Everything will be fine, and the only reason I know this is because I am in the same situation. I have been shopping the consignment stores. The store I go to for a lot of things is Stuff Etc. There are tons of these types of stores around town. There is a good one in Marion called Puddlejumpers. Also, watch the paper on Sunday. There is tons of ads in the classifieds. You can look at the classifieds on the internet also. Hope this helps.

You might want to check on the Evansville Christian Life Center, they have a program called "love for life" and they can can help you out with some baby items including a crib. Also, next time they have a "Twice is Nice" sale at the national Guard, which they usually have a couple times a year, you should check that out too. If you have never been, its like a huge garage sale inside the national guard gym of all baby items and clothes, just make sure to get there right when it starts kuz stuff sells fast! But besides that, just always keep an eye on stuff for sale in the newspaper!

There is a yahoo group called Freecycle that you might want to consider joining and you can post your "wanteds" there and if there are any members in the group who have what you need, they will respond to your post and you make arrangements to pick the things up. Best of all, its free, but you will have to post something to offer before they will let you post for something you want. There are over 2,000 members, so there is a good chance you will find anything you need. R.

Apply for W.I.C as soon as possible. That will help alot especially when the baby arrives. For clothes and other baby items, go to Once Upon A Child and other second-hand stores. They are fairly reasonable. Of course you can check out yard/garage sales if there are still some happening. For items like baby powder, shampoo, etc, also look at Big Lots, Dollar General and other places like that.
Good luck to you and God bless!

I have found that the Good Will and the Salvation Army are wonderful for things like that. How old is your son? I had my girls 2 years apart and my family gave me a babyshower for the second too. Because of the fact they were so far apart. Also if you have a bulletin board where you live you could put in an ad that states you are a family of 3 soon to be 4 and don't have alot of money but do need things for the new baby. Free or cheap. I've given to alot of ads like that.
I hope this gives you a few ideas. Good luck with the new baby.

Well I am in Ames, not sure where you live. I have had really good luck with Duck Worth consignment shop on Main Street. There are also some good consignment shops in the Des Moines area. The only one I have been to is Once Upon A Child near Valley West mall. We have gotten prett much everything we need by scouring consignment shops. We started early because it can take multiple trips to get the good stuff. Ebay can also be a good place to look for some of the larger items. Good luck.

Congrats!-

That has to be so exciting! I would try freecycle.com/org? and omahaclassifieds.com? Also, I would check out the Mommy and Me store it is off of 40th and O street. They always seem to have some cute thing for one of my children that is very cute. Also, they have cribs, strollers, toys, carriers, mommy-to-be clothing, and so much more!! It is worth checking out. You may find a deal there, but you just have to be cautious of any 2nd hand or Thrift Store. Garage sales are also the way to go, but it is getting cold for them. The journalstar.com has ads on there daily or stuff people are selling. Just go under the classified ads. Unless you get the paper then you already have them. Good Luck and Best Wishes!

Try once upon a child or goodwill. We are also just scraping by with the two of us. Places like these are a godsend. Also if you live in evansville go to the christian life center - they have a program that may help. They also give baby clothes for free when you are in your third trimester.
Also when are you due? I'm due to have my baby any day now and in a few months will have a ton of stuff that won't fit anymore. I'd be willing to give some of it to you then.

Hi K. my name is K. I am 26 and have 2 children (girl 4, boy 3 months old). I have a neice who was a total surprise for us she was born 1month after my son and we scrambled to get stuff for her b/c I had gotten rid of my girl stuff when we found out we were having a boy. We found out she was coming 3 weeks before she was born. What I am getting at is that there are a ton of consignment shops in Evansville, IN. Your profile has a different area do you live in Henderson, KY? If not this info is of no use to you. There is a cheap consignment store with lots of clothes and strollers and bouncer seats and such off of Franklin it's called Reasonable Resale..it's by a library(don't know the name of it). it's nice cheap stuff..There is another place that is reasonable called Kaylee's kids and it is off of covert ave. The girl who runs it is really sweet. There is another nice store I can't remember the name off hand but it's off of franklin too...it's two shops one for clothes and bouncer seats and high chairs and walkers and mobiles...all kinds of stuff..good prices and the other place is mainly furniture. Goodwill also normally has a bin with baby clothes 18 months and under and it's $.50 a piece...you can find some cute stuff in there sometimes..just go in the yellow pages and look under consignment and resale shops there are a ton...Bearly broken in is another one but she's a bit higher...I actually have some stuff on consignment there...but her stuff isn't badly priced you might want to check there too...I had to get as much as I could cheap...ummm there is one that has lots of blankets and like crib sets it's over off morgan ave. by rural king. they have nice reasonable baby clothes and blankets and shoes and such..I got a beautiful crib quilt and diaper holder for like $5. and I found a bumper that matched elsewhere for $3 so you can get some good deals. If you need to talk email me. I am going to school also but don't work. I took off a semester to have my son and go back in Jan., to HCC; we moved here from madisonville in May and to KY in general last july. I just switched to the RN program and hope to start in Aug. Where do you go for school and for what? I won't pry but if you want to talk email me back. I don't get on everyday but I try to check regularly. I don't have any friends here, and I tend to be shy so I don't make them easily anyway. Good luck I really hope you get to check out those places.

Hi K.,
I shop cheap all the time. I love the Goodwill on 180th and Q. Also, the GW on 144th and old L...by the Mercedes tore, is good. I know there are a lot of strollers at 180th and Q and they have nice clothes. I also watch for the Reruns R Fun(they just had it), one on 103rd and Fort and some churches have them. There are usually signs around town for these consignment places.
I do have a crib and mattress and a Graco single stroller with carseat and attachment for the car(the base) I would sell them for whatever you think is reasonable. I don't need them anymore and they are sitting in my garage. My son is 18mos and I have a 3yr old daughter. I do have some plastic gates I used to block the TV and some things I didn't want my son to get into...they are the colorful ones, big and plastic. Pretty much everything else I gave away to friends. Let me know if you are interested, my e-mail address is ____@____.com and if you are not interested it is no big deal. Another good idea is going to neighborhood garage sales. Summerwood(156th and Q) has 2 big ones every year. Hope this helps a little!

Your best luck, even though it's getting cold, is garage or church sales and places like Goodwill. Many people don't like going to places like that, but no longer than the baby stays in the same size clothing, there's no use spending top dollar for something they'll be in for maybe a month or two. You might also try home based organizations like Discovery Toys. I am a consultant for Discovery Toys in the South Point, OH area. You could host a party, and depending on how much in sales from your guests you get at the party, you can earn free toys. you can go to my website to see what type of toys we offer, www.discoverytoyslink.com/amandamannon, or go to discoverytoysinc.com to find a consultant in your area

Try all the second hand places, co-ops, and the stores that are trying to get rid of all their seasonal stuff. Sometimes you can get clothes for the baby to wear next year on clearance. I did this for my daughter this summer, at the begining of the summer I bought A LOT of their winter clearance a size larger so she can wear this winter, I also went out this week and bought a bunch of summer stuff for her to wear next summer.

Hey!

I NEVER buy anything new....that's my rule. My favorite type of store to go to is kiddie consignment shops. Their selection waxes and wanes, but I usually find INEXPENSIVE stuff in pretty good shape every time I go. They are more expensive than garage sales, but I don't have the TIME or ENERGY to hit different neighborhoods around the city every weekend. I just bought my five-year-old a great winter coat for 12 dollars.

Check with your OB and see if they give BABES coupons out. You can save up the coupons and buy things with them. The items are brand new and free too. I saved up my babes coupons and got a crib, 2 carseats, high chair and some onesies and socks and other little stuff. I loved it. Free coupons just for getting prenatal care. You can go to breast feeding classes and get them or stop smoking classes. Good luck. I also have tried free cycle. It is great. I have gotten a lot of good stuff from there. I got baby clothes and a couch and chair. Good luck. Also if you sign up for the MOM project while you are pregnant they can give you a referal for local charaties that help you out. I went and got 5 bags of stuff. They gave me stuff for 3 out of 4 of my kids. Clothes, toys, diapers. You can get a referal every 3 months. It is a great program. I would take advantage of it.

YARD SALES!! With our second we didn't NEED anything except a bed and we got a great bed and dresser at a yard sale for very cheap. Also if I can get myself motivated to wake up early on Saturday mornings I like to go for toys and clothes because baby clothes don't get too worn out and sometimes parents buy outfits that their kids only wear 1 time or non (I'm guilty of that!) Also Ebay is a good place to look for clothes. Some sellers even have items listed as NWT (new with tags) ar gently used.

Look for some children's consignment shops in your area. They often have the necessities for very little money. (eg. I wish I had just gone there to get a baby bathtub for $5 instead of getting a new one for $20).

Also, check with people that you know that have had a baby recently - or not so recently. You'd be amazed what people keep in their attic. I borrowed a lot of stuff from a friend that has a two year old. I think she saved me about $1500 (no kidding).

One other thought...check out the website www.freecycle.org You can see if anyone is giving stuff away in your area. While you're on the web, check out ebay. Maybe you can combine shipping and get a batch of stuff fairly cheap.

Garage sales are another way to go.
