Needing Some Advice - Guerneville,CA

My six year old has had a fever ranging from 99.8-101.8 since last night and it keeps going down and then coming back. There are no other symptoms except last night she said her tummy hurt for a little while. She has no spots or rashes, and seems to be doing fine just really heated up. Does anyone know what could be going on? I really do not want to go to the ER if we don't have to, so any advice or knowledge about this will help, thank you

What can I do next?

Low grade fever like that usually means bacterial infection. Give her Tylenol to help her thru the night. Get her into her doc tomorrow.

Welcome to mamapedia!!!

That's not a high fever...103 and above is considered high. That is not cause for an ER visit unless she starts acting "different" - lethargic - blue lips, extremities turning purple or blue...THOSE symptoms would be a reason to go to the ER.

Does your daughter have a normal low body temperature? As in - like 96.7 instead of 98.6? The only reason I ask - is because no doctor will do much or get worked up over the 101 fever...her body is fighting an infection of some sort.

If she's still feverish in 48 hours? I would make an appointment with my pediatrician. In the meantime? Make sure she stays hydrated and watch her for other symptoms.

Good luck!

Yep. Infection somewhere. Probably not viral. Tummy hurting can mean strep so make sure they do a strep test even if no sore throat. There may be more symptoms later tonight or tomorrow. As long as its not bothering her too much, I would let the fever do its work and resist using Advil or Tylenol. It also might cover up symptoms that would be helpful in diagnosis. She will most likely be fine till tomorrow. ER is for emergencies. If you have any questions in the night, call the hospital and ask for a nurses answer line or help line.

That's a low grade fever, she doesn't even need motrin or tylenol or anything, unless she gets REALLY uncomfortable.
I wouldn't start to worry unless/until the fever hits 102/103 and doesn't respond to OTC meds.

No need for a doctor, that's a low grade fever and can be either viral or bacterial, FYI. I'm an RN, and a mom of 5. As long as she can eat and drink, let her rest, check her temp about every 2 hours, and if she isn't otherwise uncomfortable, I wouldnt' treat it with anything (i.e. Tylenol) either. After 2-3 days, if there is no change, or it gets about 102.5, get her in to the Pediatrician.
Good luck!

Keep her home from school. Her body is fighting a bug. Totally normal. Our bodies "cook" out germs because germs are weaker than our cells.

I don't think that this merits going to the ER, without more pressing symptoms. Make an appointment to go to the ped as soon as the office opens Monday morning. Ask for a strep test. Sometimes strep presents with a sick stomach. It's not always as a bad sore throat. Ruling out strep is smart and helps you know whether or not she actually needs antiobitics.

Hope she feels better soon.

This is definitely not an ER type of illness. She probably has a virus of some sort. It not better in a few days, take her into doc. I. The meantime, just makes sure she stays hydrated.

Our pediatrician didn't want to see kids if the fever was below 103 and there were no other symptoms.
Some sort of lingering bug has been going around this spring and it's been common for a kid to have a 102 fever for about 5 days to a week before it goes away for good.
Manage it with alternating Tylenol and Motrin and have them rest up.

Her body is fighting off some illness. It wins for a while and the fever goes down then the illness fights back and the temp goes up and so forth. Her body is working so she'll be more tired too.

Do not take your child to the ER for a 101 fever. Do not take your child to the ER for a 104 fever unless they are lethargic and dehydrated.

Kids get fevers. Fevers mean the body is fighting off some sort of "bug".

A fever with complains of a tummy ache could mean strep, so I would make an appt with your pediatrician today to get her tested.

My 5 year old son had a fever last week with no other symptoms. It spiked at about 103+ (his normal temp is around 96), but was well managed with Tylenol. Before the medicine, he was sleepy and pretty miserable. When the Tylenol would kick in, he wanted to play freeze dance, have a parade and eat pie. :)

I did not call the doctor, just kept him home from school and activities until he was fever-free for 24 hours. I gave him some gatorade and made sure he wasn't dehydrated. It lasted about 18 hours.

Her fever isn't nearly high enough to warrant a trip to the hospital. Manage it with motrin if she's uncomfortable (call your doc if you don't know the dosage based on her weight) and her body will fight off whatever virus she has.

Such a low grade fever is not ER worthy. Just watch her. Let her body do what it was made to do and fight off whatever little bug is bugging her. Keep her home so she doesn't give other kids the crud, but unless she suddenly spikes a noteworthy fever or develops other symptoms, just keep her home and happy.
