My son, 6 years old, has had bad experiences with denist. I thought I had found a good denist. He was real nice and good with the kids. Well yesterday, my son had to have some work done on his teeth. I had paid for the sedation because of previous bad experiences. First of all, his appt was at 10:30 am. The doctor showed up 3 hours late. He said he had to go pick up a part for his truck. Then they gave him an intermuscular shot. That didn't work fast enough for him when they started working on his teeth. He cried the whole time. The doctor was also answering his cell phone at the same time he was working on my son's teeth. I just don't want a denist who is not going to take the time to comfort a child in pain and do a good job. I went to this denist before and he had sudation and he was very calm. So I know this time he could of done the same quality of work and my son would not be afraid of the denist anymore. Does anyone know of a good children's denist? And what should I do with the denist now? Should I file a complaint or just let it go?
I want to thank everyone for the advise. I wanted you to know that I requested all copies of everything in the file, including charts. When I went to go pick everything up, they hand me a list of things that were done. They ended up refunding everything I paid except the sedation cost. Which was better that nothing. I will be filing a complaint through the county and state. I want my children to have a better experience when they see a denist and not be scared for the rest of their life. I take my kids (ages 2 and 4) to Dr. Brian Collins. He's located at 7777 Forest Lane, Ste. C-626 in Dallas. His phone number is ###-###-####. My oldest was terrified the first time and now he loves it. He is always asking if I will take him to the dentist. My youngest used to not let us brush her teeth, but after her first trip it's gotten a lot easier. Dr. Collins is extremely patient with the kids and he'll answer any questions we have.
I am a dental hygienist working part time and mother of a 6 month old. I work in a family practice and we see kids starting at the age of three. I am so sorry you have had this experience. This is totally uncalled for and this dentist should not be practicing. We have an pediatric anesthesiaologist come to our office to sedate the children if needed. I would say that only about 5% of children need to be sedated. The rest of the children that are afraid, we use a drug called Halcion. The child takes it 1 hour before the procedure and it makes them completely relaxed. I think it is the best way to go (instead of the full blown sedation). Dr. Michael Plunk is the pediatric dentist we use for general work on two of my sons. He's in the Doctor's Hospital Professional Building next door to Doctor's Hospital in East Dallas.
For my son with a repaired cleft lip/palate, we use Dr. Brian Collins in the Medical City professional offices off Forest Lane in Dallas. Dr. Collins has a repaired cleft himself, and I felt he was more attuned to the special dental needs of cleft kids.
Both Drs. Plunk and Collins were rated by their peers as being in the top 5 pediatric dentists in the DFW area.
You definitely shouldn't have to settle for bad dental treatment!!

First, I am so sorry for your child's experience. That just breaks my heart.
I love my sons dentist. Dr. Lara Holly. I was so impressed with the staff as well as the doctor. They all took their time, making sure my son was comfortable and adjusted to the situation before they started anything. I also love it when my children's doctors (Dr. Holly does!) also have small children of their own.....they seem to have a better perspective of what it's like to be on the patient side.

Try Dr. Michelle Lindsay, Children's Dentistry of Arlington, in Lincoln Square, ###-###-####. She and all of her staff are so WONDERFUL! :)
Dr Shelley Clark. She is in Cedar Hill but WELL WORTH the drive. Her husband and father in law are also dentists next door and will coordinate appts if you want to do yours and your childrens appts on same day. Dr. Shelley Clarks number ###-###-####. My kids personally go to Dr. Clark but I have heard of Dr. Michelle Lindsay in Arlington and have heard good things.
I don't know where you live, so I don't have any recommendations for you -- BUT -- FILE A COMPLAINT!!! If you have insurance, file a complaint w/ your insurance company so they have information that will show them he needs to be removed as a provider under thier plan. Also file a complaint w/ the American Dental Association (or whoever it is) that he has his license through. A dr being distracted and answering his cell phone could have lead to serious issues! He could have hurt your son. I would absolutely file a complaint and not just let it go -- unfortunately, that happened to your son, but don't let it go and let it happen to someone else's also.
And, NEVER be a afraid to speak out during the procedure! If you saw him doing that, don't be afraid to tell him to not answer his phone, or to stop until your son's pain meds have kicked in. Don't be afraid to stand up to him, he's just a dentist - YOU'RE the MOM! You are your childrens advocate. I know it can be intimidating to say something to a "professional" - but you have to advocate for your child!

Several of my friends at church went to Dr. Plunk in East Dallas when they were young. They said he would juggle for them. They all really liked him a lot. A personal friend of mine is Dr. Jeffrey Jones on Washington Ave. behind McDonalds across from Baylor. He has a family practice that includes kids. He has 4 children himself. I take my 8 year old daughter who has extreme sensory issues and mediphobia to the dental clinic at Children's Medical Center. It's actually located on Harry Hines, not in the hospital. The staff there has been wonderful at trying to calm her fears.
