Quiggly's Clayhouse in Richardson does wonderful gifts using hand and footprints. You can do it in paint or clay. The owners are very creative and helpful (and new parents).
Okay all you crafty mammas out there - I need some help. My FIL's birthday is coming up quick and I wanted to mail him a set of hand and/or footprints in clay all painted cute, but that's as far as my big idea got me. I know that Crayola makes that modeling compound that dries out when it's exposed to air and thought about using that, but I'm not really sure what I should do with it. Do I press it into a little box or something and then put my toodles hand and foot prints in them, let them dry, and then add a hanger or something? As you see, I am completely without a clue here. He loves this kind of stuff, and I know he'll put it out somewhere in his house in a place of honor, so I want it to look really professional and nice.
Thanks in advance for all your help!

I did a painted plate for my father for Christmas and he loves it! There are clay houses around where you can paint your own, but I'm not very crafty so I used Painted Piggies. She took a handprint of my 3 year old and a footprint of my 6 mo old and turned them into turkeys. We decorated the platter to say "Your Texas Turkeys Love You". He keeps it out year-round. Here is her website http://www.paintedpiggies.com/
They sell kits at Hobby Lobby and Michael's that are very easy to use. I would start there if you have a limited amount of time. If not, then you can always use someone like Heavenly Toes or Painted Piggies. Good luck...it is such a sweet and thoughtful gift.
You can find at Target or a Craft Store the ones you are talking about but they have a frame or tin that they are held in that makes it really cute.
go to petsmart...they carry these kits that have the clay for a hand or footprint and a pic on the other side. i have seen them occasionally at target but i know petsmart always has them. check it out. good luck.
they have kits in the craft section (at like walmart) that come with everything you need, plus a stand for it when you're done.
What I did with my 4yo was I bought some of the 11 x14 poster board and I painted his hand in a color and pressed it to the poster board. Washed his hand and did it again with a different color. So, what I got was his handprint in 6 different colors in a row. I bought a plain black frame and it now hangs in our play room. Really cute and cheap since I already had all the play paint.
Last Christmas I did something similar that the grandparents (and Daddy) loved. I went to Sunshine Glaze at the Southlake town center and had my son's footprints painted onto 3 different plates. Then, I went back by myself (much easier) so I could paint it how I wanted for each person. They put it in a kiln and it's beautiful. If you don't have time to paint yourself, you can have them do whatever you want for you. They have different sizes of plates, cups, etc. Good luck with whatever you decide!!
I was wanting something similar for a mother's day gift and I ended up having a Piggies & Paws party. You don't have to do the party. I consultant I used said that if we came to her house there you be no fee and if she came to ours it would be small. I LOVE how they came out and it is something that I can hang on the way. They are expensive either.
