Need to Know If I Did the Right Thing...

I need to know if you think I did the right thing. I suppose I am doubting myself on this one. Here's a little information on my ordeal. I work at the local YMCA as a babysitter one day a week. I am in progess with a degree towards being a nurse, this by no means makes me a Dr. but it does mean I need to be current on the study of diseases and everything else with the body. Which also means I only get my information from the Center for Disease and Control (CDC), and my textbooks.

A kid came down with Coxsackie (aka. Hand, Foot, Mouth Disease) on Monday. The mother brought her in today, Thursday. Accordning to my studies, the CDC, and my Dr. this child is contageous for at least another 2 weeks. But according to the kids mother and some staff members who "googled it" she is fine since the fever went away. I refuse to agree with that. You can google anything you want and find whatever information you want, it doesn't mean it's accurate.

I refused to work and babysit today because of this kid and her contageousness (I always have my 2 kids with me when I work). Do you think that was wrong? All I am trying to do is protect my kids from a nasty and potentially harmful disease, if the kid had a cold it wouldn't have been an issue for me. I only made an issue of it because it's this particular disease. What do you think?

What can I do next?

You did the right thing. It doesn't matter whether she is contageous or not. If your not comfortable then that is all that matters. You have 2 small kids to think about and have only their best interest at heart. I would never consider taking my kids to a very public place when they are sick like that. That child needs to be home resting. By all means, you have every right to do what you did. Way to stand up for yourself and your family. Your a good momma.

You have to go with your insinct... I had a situation with chicken pox last fall where a friend was going to bring her kids who had just been exposed to chicken pox to a playgroup. I called my pediatrician and as told not to go near them for 2 weeks because that's the incubation period and my then 4-month-old should not be exposed. There was a bit of a scuffle over e-mail because she insisted that I was being rediculous... her daughter broke out in spots less than a week later. Making a stand for your kids is always the right thing to do!!
Best of luck!

If you are scared for your babies, go with your gut, Mama. Maybe it would put a little Fear of Google in that mother who trusted it so implicitly. We all want to believe our babies are "all better", but...at what cost? I think you did the right thing, if you were scared.

J.,
Whether or not you did the right thing is up to you, however from what I understand about coxsakie, even though the "blisters" can stay for weeks, once the fever is gone for 24 hours, the child is no longer contagious.

Regardless, you need to do what is best for you and your kids!
