Seeing a doctor about it is a good thing to do.
Losing some weight can help.
He might need a CPAP device.
My husband's snoring is driving us to sleep apart so we can both get adequate sleep. Does anyone know of a way to stop it?? We've tried essential oils, and acupuncture to no avail. Any ideas?
Thanks so much! Great answers. Getting an ENT appt. today and hopefully, he'll order a sleep study.

My husband, also.
I would start by seeing an ENT or primary care physician for a referral.
What we have heard is the issue is either physiological, or weight-related. Neck circumference has something to with it. In my husband's case, he doesn't have sleep apnea, but he needs to lose 20 lbs.
He MUST have a sleep study done. They will probably give him a CPAP machine which will solve all your problems, providing he will wear it. My husband had his deviated septum fixed about 4 years ago, and the surgeon told him he was even snoring during the surgery. So he finally had a sleep study done and, lo and behold... sleep apnea. His sleep quality is so much better and he can't even sleep without if now (because he wakes himself up snoring if he does...)
My husband resisted for a long time. But sleep apnea is very serious and can create a lot of other issues (including heart attach). Once he finally went, he wished he'd gone sooner.
Trust me... we tried every other thing. Once he gets his CPAP machine, you won't hear a peep out of him.
Have you tried a doctor or a sleep study? If the snoring is that bad, I would be concerned he has sleep apnea. Which means he isn't getting enough air. Lifestyle changes, mouth pieces and breathing machines can help, oils and acupuncture will do nothing for it. If the snoring is affecting both of you it's time to see a professional.
I snored and had sleep issues. I blamed my hubby's snoring for YEARS until I was told to get a sleep study since I was complaining about being so tired all of the time (literally almost falling asleep at the wheel). Yup, I have sleep apnea. Now on a machine for 3 months, I am so much better!!! I am more alert, have more energy and sleep all night without telling my hubby to roll over. The machine is depressing at first but you get used to it and it's benefits. Talk to your doctor about a sleep study for your hubby. Not only will it help him sleep, it might save his life. Sleep apnea and heart disease (as well as other things) go hand in hand.
I heard on tv a couple of days ago the suggestion to duct tape a tennis ball to hubby's back, and I was trying to imagine my husband agreeing to that one. But it sure is tempting. Sometimes I'd like to tape a tennis ball over his mouth.
Fortunately, pushing him on his side does the trick.
If your husband is overweight, losing weight usually helps. Or sleep studies, as the others have suggested.
Good luck!
Going to the doc to have this medical problem addressed should take care of the problem.
He can either have surgery where they burn off excess tissue in his throat or they'll prescribe a C-PAP for him.
My husband went to the head ORL doc at OU Health Science Center and he put him on the C-PAP and he's done really well since then. I can't hear it either.
He had to go through a trial and error time until he found the right appliance(?) to use that was most comfortable. He tried about 6 different options.
Your hubby will sleep better and he'll feel better after using the C-PAP.
The one issue we did have way back when they were first working with him was the pressure of the air. They'd raise it every few months. The goal was to get him used to the air blowing in all night so they started him off very low. There was a time when they increased it too quickly and it would gag him when he turned it on. He stopped using it for a while but when he went back on they had a different system. This newer one worked so much better.
He wears it every night and sleeps all night without snoring at all.
Maybe he needs to see a doctor? He may have sleep apnea....
I've always been a snorer... but didn't realize it was a problem, until I would wake up in the morning and find that my husband had left our bed to sleep elsewhere...
Also, I was falling asleep in the evening more and more often, and struggling to get up in the morning.. (I thought that it was because I hated where I worked that I couldn't drag myself out of bed in the morning.)
Anyway, hubby told me that it sounded like possibly sleep apnea, and he recorded my sounds.... it was really kind of scary, listening to the sounds.... so I went to my doctor, who referred me to an ENT, who scoped me to see if there were any obstructions in the airway, then set me up for a sleep study.
Yep... sleep apnea.... 2 months later, I got my CPAP machine, and I absolutely LOVE it! I had no problems getting used to using it (I know others do struggle with it... my sister hasn't been able to get used to using hers, but hers is set on a higher pressure than mine), and better yet, I sleep wonderfully now... (except for the carpal tunnel and other arm issues... but that is a different story).
Sleep apnea can REALLY affect many areas of a person's health.... please encourage him to get checked out.
Small snoring problems sometimes benefit from something like Breathe Right strips, but your problem sounds worse.
He should see a doctor. There is a simple procedure that works for some people - done in a doctor's office to open up the passages at the rear of the mouth. But if your husband's problem is due to sleep apnea, he may need more. Sleep studies are covered by medical insurance; a CPAP (continuous positive air pressure) machine may be recommended. They are not terrible to get used to and they make a world of difference. Apnea can be dangerous, and meantime your husband is driving a car while sleep deprived because he's not getting REM sleep. That's very dangerous to him and to others in the short run, and it has long term health effects too.
What has stopped my husband's snoring is juicing! My hubby began juicing earlier this summer and has lost 70lbs. With that weight loss came nights w/o snoring. I don't know if this will work for your hubby but it may be worth a shot if he's overweight.
Before juicing, I also noticed that my hubby would snore most when he didn't get enough sleep before getting up for work the following day. By the end of the week, his snoring would be so unbearable simply because he hadn't had quality sleep throughout the week.
Whenever my husband was overweight that is when he snores the most. Not sure if yours is, but if he is, if he lost weight it could help.. Also, when my husband regularly does yoga, this also alleviates snoring... the snore strips also work somewhat.. but mostly, weight reduction and exercise..
My husband snores when he sleeps in any position except on his side. So when he starts snoring, I poke him and he generally turns onto his side.
Gaining weight and drinking alcohol are two causes. An ENT might be able to help, though.
i think it's great he is going to go to doc and maybe get a sleep study. in the meantime try to get him to sleep slightly elevated with a wedge. Might help.
My husband is awaiting the results of a sleep study as I write.
It might mean apnea & a CPAP machine.
Otherwise, earplugs for me and a mouthpiece (plastic, boil to fit type) for him.

My spouse uses a CPAP machine and it works wonderfully. All I hear is a little humming noise like white noise. Since he has had this machine he doesn't get sleepy throughout the day at work or just drop off when sitting still. In the past recent months he has also dropped about 50 pounds which has really be good for him. A sleep study is probably what he needs. I hope this helps.
Sleep studies are great, I guess, but they won't solve the snoring problem. My BIL had one; now he has a machine that makes almost as much noise as the snoring. No relief for my SIL at all!
