My Husband Snores Badly Every Night

Does anyone have any suggestions about helping this situation. Either him or me. My husband snores so much the room almost shakes. I do not want to leave our bed, as I enjoy the closeness and warmth of being with him and we are both happy together. But the snoring wakes me up all night.I tried ear plugs. Perhaps I used the wrong kind. Anyone know of any that would work. He is also willing to try things to take or nasal sprays. Anyone successful with anything? Thanks.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for so much advice and I've been trying a number of them. Hubby won't see a doctor, but we have a variety of temporary solutions thanks to all of you I am sleeping a little more! If he is snoring on his back I turn him sideways. If he remembers he uses vicks before he falls asleep. It smells somewhat obnoxious, but whatever it takes... I also have some industrial strength earplugs from Walgreens and worse comes to worse I even tried one of your advice -Nightime ibuprofin. Cuts down on what I hear if I'm sleeping. Thanks MOMS...AHHH...

As a dentist I recommend a snore guard. I have several patients that I have made them for, and they swear by them. I have also made one for my husband. Call my office ###-###-####, and talk to Michael, he can tell you all about it. It's the easiest and cheapest way to start.

Smoking and being overweight can cause snoring. If that isn't the problem you could try ear plugs. My husband can snore so loud at times the ear plugs didn't help so I downloaded a thunderstorm on my ipod and listen to it every night. I also have sound isolate ear plugs! Hope that helps!

Try Earos brand earplugs. I think i bought them at Whole foods. Also, Breathe Right strips help and I understand there is a homeopathic spray that helps, but haven't tied it. Also, the sobakawa pillows that are filled with buckwheat hulls help because they support the neck really well. Good luck!

I completely know what you are talking about! My husband is a total Snore.lol Not that he is boring at all but he SNORES and rocks the house so to speak! So....we tried everything even went to a sleep theapist. The only thing that helped was the snore pillow (brookstone.com) It really helped. Another thing that helped before the pillow was tylenol pm for me (so I was out and didn't hear him.lol) or wearing my ipod with sleep music playing in my ear buds to drown him out.lol Good luck!

Snore Strips. You can buy them at wlagreens, target, etc. Loosing weight can help to if that is an issue. My hubby is a big guy...at a healthy weight he is 220 and and 6 foot 2, but when he starts to cross the 250 line he snores so load it I can hearit downstairs, then if he looses ten or fifteen pounds, like he has in the last few weeks it stops. Also, I have noticed that allergies can really aggravate this in my self and have found talikng the right meds helps tremendously. My parents sleep in seperate rooms and I swear it has saved their marriage.

My husband used to be the same way. I used the ear plugs at WalMart that come in a big tub and they are 32 decibal. I could still hear the kids if the cried, but it helped a little bit with the snoring. My husband went in and had a sleep study done by a sleep doctor and ended up getting a CPAP machine. We are so thrilled now, because when he uses it he doesn't snore at all. It is amazing! He just got it 2 months ago and still isn't used to using it yet. We find him taking it off in his sleep when he isn't even awake. But, it has worked wonders. In the meantime, try having him use Breathe Rite strips- they help a little. I haven't heard about that snore thing at the dentist.

I have been happily married for 14 years to my best friend and I can tell you that the snoring almost made me run!!! (kidding) Anyway, he finally had a sleep study and it was discovered that he has sleep apnea. He wears a breathing machine at night and it is a miracle!!!

Aside from the obvious perks, like sleeping through the night, the research shows that people with sleep apnea are more likely to have strokes and high blood pressure. This was enough for me to encourage the sleep study.

By the way, if it's apnea, then NONE of the other things on the market will work. Even the dental guard.....

Good luck!

Hi S.!

I am the same as you - we tried everything! Every home remedy, every ear plug, EVERY thing.

Finally, we started sleeping separately. It was like a miracle for me - I finally got a good nights rest and felt better than I had in years.

In the end, he sometimes sleeps with me, but I have to turn upside down and sleep with my face to his feet and his face to my feet or he's NOT snoring several decibels of loudness directly into my ear. He also MUST sleep on his stomach or he will snore worse. If I can't roll him over, I wake him up and ask him to roll over. Sometimes we get frustrated with this arrangement - even if we are sleeping feet to face - because I'll have to wake him up 15 times in middle of the night, so he'll finally get up and go to a different room.

Another thing that might help is that I use a very loud HEPA filter machine in my bedroom for my allergies. This machine also helps block out his snoring by keeping the "sounds" in the room at a similar and constant loudness.

My husband is very heavy, so I do not see surgery as an option - he is over 300 lbs, so I know what his neck is always going to be tight and cause problems for him from a snoring perspective, so we have decided to sleep separate most of the time. He has also been tested for APNEA, but they discovered it is only about half-APNEA that's the problem, so they wouldn't prescribe one of those machines. So here we are.

The reason our sleeping arrangement works for us is he is very, very, very affectionate outside of the bedroom and we make a lot of time for each other plus we have sex often because he comes into the room early mornings or snuggles with me late night if I approach him. We are very touchy-feely and he is generous with his hugs and public displays of affection, so I do not feel as if I am missing anything. I am very happy overall and we have been married for almost 10 years, so for us, this solution - or way of life of sleeping separately the majority of the time - really works. Again, the key is to feel you have that closeness with him in other ways.

Good luck!

Has hubby been checked for sleep apnea? It can be treated with a breathing machine (C Pap) if the problem is that severe. Those nose bandades I've heard are terrific. My husband snored like that for years before being put on that machine. Believe me (he's GONE now), I miss every night without that snoring.......

My husband is also an extremely loud snorer. We have tried just about everything besides surgery. So far for me the only thing that works is taking Advil PM before I go to bed. I only take one instead of the recommended two so I can still hear the kids if they get up and be coherent enough to get up myself. But it does help me sleep against my husband's snoring. It might sound crazy, but it works for me when nothing else has.

My husband snored so bad the earth shook too. He finally went to the doctor and was sent to a sleep clinic. He was diagnosed with sleep apnea (a serious health condition). Now he sleeps with a mask and with an attached machine. My husband had to go through three masks before he was comfortable. Now he and I are getting sleep and he doesn't have to sleep on the couch anymore! It's worth a try! Good luck...

My hubby is the same way, esp. when he has a cold! For some reason, if they sleep on their back its worse! Try to get him to sleep up on an extra pillow and NOT on his back. And try the "breathe right" strips. These couple things have made sleep time a lot quieter in our house. If it persists, there may be a medical reason for it such as a deviated septum or nasal polyps. So if it doesn't go away, have him checked out by an ENT (ears, nose and throat) doc.
Good Luck,

He needs to have a sleep study to see what the cause of it is. Does he ever stop breathing at any time for moment? Is he over weight? There are lots of causes of snoring and those nasal sprays and other remedies only mask the true reason for the problem. It can be very serious so definitely get him to a doctor. My husband was overweight and had sleep apnea. Had the study done and they put him on a cpap machine and he slept like a baby. He then had gastric bypass surgery, dropped a 125 pounds and does not snore at all, unless he has a stuffed up nose. Definitly get it checked out asap!

It may be that your husband has sleep apnea. This will cause him to snore loudly and also cause him to have restless sleep. It can be dangerous because his breathing may stop during his snoring bouts. Please have him see his doctor for a diagnosis and treatment. There are also sleep apnea support groups in the western suburbs of Chicago.

My husband snores quite a bit also, making it difficult for me to sleep. It is definitely a good idea to have him discuss with his MD about possible causes. In the meantime, Breathe Right strips (name brand - not a generic brand, unfortunately) and sleeping on second pillow,to keep him just a little bit upright, have helped to decrease the intensity of noise from my husband's snoring. I'm the snoring person in our bed. My husband always wakes me up when I wake him up.... it sucks for sure.
I bet your hubby might have very loose skin on his pallet and once he relaxes it starts to vibratin'. That's what the doc said mine is. Of course they can surgically go in there and nip and tuck but I'm not having any of THAT! My husband just puts his pillow over his head. When I wake up in the morning and see him like that it's kinda bitter sweet.
We've thought about separate rooms since we have a nice comfy queen sized bed in one of our spare bedrooms, but neither of us want to make that move just yet...
My grandparents and my great grandparents slept in separate rooms for as long as I can remember. I guess it could happen eventually.

Don't let him sleep on his back, make him sleep on his side or stomach. Also have him get a sleep study for sleep apnea. My husband had one done and he failed miserably. He ended up having his adenoids removed and a deviated septum fixed. Also snoring is worse when you drink or smoke.

Hi there,
has he seen his health care provider? Snoring is common from allergies that swell the nose turbinates, and then the air resonates when he breaths in when he is sleeping.
Repositioning on his side (and you asking him to during his sleep) can also help.
It can also be caused by sleep apnea, which is a potential significant health risk.
Start with a health check up. It can only get better form there :)

My husband does too.....or now it is sometimes. When we first got married I made him go to the doctor and get a sleep study. He ended up with a C-pap machine for sleep apnea. Has he ever been tested? I learned that he snores more when he faces inside (towards each other) than outside (towards the wall.....and definitely on his back. So I find myself telling him to roll over when he's not using his machine. If he hasn't gone to the doctor.....tell him he needs to if he wants to save his life. My husband is thankful that I did. He's been married twice before and neither one made the suggestion.

P.s another factor may be weight or if he is getting the proper amount of sleep each night. If not, the body is extremely tired and he needs to be sure he is getting a MINIMUM 8hrs. Sounds easier said than done with most work schedules and family activities but it is important for the body to rest. Hope this helps.

In our case, I've had him switch rooms with our daughter, where he'd sleep in her room and she'd sleep with me. Unfortunately, she's been starting to snore, too.

Breathe Right strips and sprays have NOT helped. All I can say is SLEEP TEST. Hopefully your husband is more willing to listen than mine! ;-)

I didn't have time to read all of your responses so I apologize if this is a duplicate.

My husband snores when his allergies are bothering him and I have to wake him up and remind him to go take his allergy medicine. As long as he takes his allergy medicine he doesn't snore.

If nasal sprays and allergy medicine isn't helping, it may be that he has sleep apnea. You should suggest that your husband go and have this checked out. My father would not go get his horrible snoring checked out for years and instead we all had to deal with poor sleeping because he snored so loud you could hear it throughout the house. He finally went and had things checked out after my grandmother was diagnosed with sleep apnea and started using a machine and told everyone how much better she felt now that she was sleeping better. It turns out my father would stop breathing hundreds of times a night and that it was really quite dangerous. He now uses a machine and says he feels much, much better. He also doesn't fall asleep throughout the day like he used to. We had a friend that was diagnosed with sleep apnea as well and he had his tonsils removed and now sleeps fine and does not snore, so a machine isn't a definite.

Good Luck,

My husband snores really loud too! Sometimes I get so frustrated I want to put my pillow on him and sit on it, but I opt for telling him to turn over, which sometimes helps. He didn't snore until he gained weight. Like others have mentioned, weight can be a factor, but my 3 y.o and 6 y.o recently started snoring loud and they are no where near overweight.. their doctor is attributing the snoring to inflammation in their nose and throat from allergies, so with all the different causing, I would start with your husbands doctor. My husband also snores loudly (not loudly enough to shake the room though!) and it was waking me up. I bought him Breathe Right strips and they have worked really well so far. If he's on his back though the snoring does sneak back in but if on his sides everything is just fine. His father also snores very loudly and he did a sleep study where they found out he had sleep apnea. In his case, they had to realign his jaw because the bottom part of his mouth was falling back into his throat causing the snoring and him waking up a few times an hour because of lack of air. My husband was going to go this route too but I'm glad we tried the Breathe Right strips first as they are working and far less expensive and invasive!

My husband does sleep studies and I am a respiratory therapist. Snore guards rarely solve the problem. If your husband is snoring that loud, he most likley has sleep apnea, which needs to be corrected. Sleep apnea leads to congestive heart failure, high blood pressure, lung disease, strokes, etc, if uncorrected. He needs to talk to his doctor, who will then refer him to a sleep lab.

I had a real problem with my husband snoring a few years ago. Believe it or not, it was stress - his job was on the rocks, plus a few other things. The job ended, we moved, stress went away and so did the snoring.

I also had a friend to suffered SEVERLY from sleep apnea - his wife couldn't sleep at all! After he got the tesing and got the machine - things turned completely around.

If I were you, I'd start with the doctor and see where it takes me - most of the over the counter remedies that you are trying are probably just a waste of money - Good Luck!!

Girl, I know what you're going through. Try the breathe right strips and see if that helps. It helps my husband a lot to which things have gotten better with the snoring. Make him a doctor's apointment to see if he has a sleep apenea and see what thay suggest. My husband says he is not rested because he snores so much and stops breathing for a couple of seconds during his sleep and he says he's always tired. He says he sleeps better and certainly quieter with the strips but he will get up and go in the office to sleep if he thinks he's disturbing me. Once I'm sleep I don't have a problem but if I get up to go to the bathroom then I have to switch rooms because of the snoring.

It sounds like your husband has sleep apnea. Sometimes this happens when you are very relaxed at night and the soft palate drops obstructing the airway. This often occurs in people who are a touch obese. (It may even happen in people who are not obese.) I don't know if there is anything over the counter that would actually work. I suggest an ENT Specialist who would be able to help him out. Good Luck to you both.
