5HTP it's great 100 mils..i like that combo w/ Chill Pill but i haven't been able to find chill pill so i'll have to order it...i've been using it with L-Theanine

There are two vitamins/supplements that have really helped me boost my mood: getting enough B-vitamins, selenium, and iron in a great multi, and getting enough Omega 3's.
Regarding the multi - I really like SuperNutrition vitamins. These were first introduced to me by a naturopath when I was having similar issues to the ones you mentioned above, and they made a real difference for me. I've been using them for over eight years and am really glad!
Omega 3s are great brain boosters - in fact, clinical studies have shown that 4,000 mg/day of Omega 3s work as well as a low grade anti-depressant. Additionally, what's great for your brain is great for your heart -- and great for your hair, which I totally love -- so the Omega's are a win-win.
However, there are two problems with Omegas 3s that a lot of people run into. The first is that plant-derived Omega-3s are simply not as bio-available as fish-derived Omega 3s, so a lot of people will take flax or something and then get discouraged because they do not notice any difference. For most people to assimilate Omega 3s well, they really need to be animal-derived.
However, this leads to the second problem, which is that many fish and fish-derived products are high in heavy metals like mercury and other contaminents.
That said, supplementing with Omega 3s is great; you just need to find a great brand. I like Nordic Naturals because they are pharmacuetical-grade and 3rd party tested for purity. I'm sure that there are some other great brands out there too, but you just want to make sure the brand is pharmecuetical-grade.
I go through the Vitamin Shoppe to get these because supplements can be expensive! There, you can sign up for a free customer rewards card where you earn points and discounts, they have free shipping options, and, if you go through the web, they're always having sales.

If you think you are having 'real' medical issues and thus 'depression' perhaps get a check up with your Doctor first? sometimes 'moods' are a result of maybe thyroid or hormonal imbalances etc. Or, it's just being drained mentally/emotionally.
or, if you prefer homeopathic alternatives, see a Homeopath Doctor.
It's hard to 'know' what to take, unless you know for certain what is ailing you.
I know for PMS, Primrose Oil tabs are supposed to help.
Or, there are homeopathic tabs you can take... if you look in a natural food store, there are literally TONS of different kinds, for all kinds of ailments.
I heard that St.Johns Wort has side effects. But I'm no expert, so don't quote me. AND, if these things are used in conjunction with any undiagnosed underlying medical problems, it can make it worse possibly.
Or, exercise is also great for improving 'moods' too, and for helping one sleep better.
No matter what, research what you plan to take, and the dosage. But don't take things willy-nilly.

Good for you not taking chemical based anti-depressants, ie Prozac!
1. Ginger has a long folk history of use for treating anxiety and depression. Look up recipes for making ginger tea or home-made ginger ale.
2. Purslane - health food stores and speciality markets may carry it but you may have to wait until about April or May to see it. Purslane is rich in magnesium and potassium and has been shown to have anti-depressant effects. It has lots of other constituents with antidepressant value.
In fact, there is such a thing as an anti-sad salad, which consists of lettuce, pigweed (amaranth), lambs quarter and watercress.
3. Rosemary essential oil is favored in aromatherapy for treating depression. This is for external use only
4. Foods rich in B vitamins can help.
Finally, this is not something to cure with a pill. Try to get some kind of outdoor exercise you enjoy - ie walk with an ipod, jump rope, roller skate, take up line dance or add something even more fun that appeals to you!
Also it would be nice for you to make it a goal to try to actually talk with 3 friends each day, even if it's only for 5 minutes. Sometimes depression is just from feeling isolated and reconnecting with other humans is a great help.

I'm with prev. post, rule out medical issues first. After/during that, make sure you are well hydrated, adequate sleep, taking a good multi-vitamin and going for a 30-minute (or 3, 10-minute) walk a day - outside in the sun and fresh air. Good luck to you!
I agree with the Vitamin B! I used to be on anti depressants but got so tired of all the side affects. I eventually stopped taking them and started taking Vitamin B complex and found that it worked for me. Now I don't scream at my son anymore and don't ball my eyes out at everything. I even sleep better at night. I also started Tae Kwon Do and I am 47 this month. The physical activity helped with my energy and so did the Vitamin B complex. It comes in 50 or 100.
Best of luck to you! PS I tried St. Johns Wort too and it is an herbal supplement that doesn't have as much track record or research as a vitamin supplement. I found it didn't work for me. But we are all different. Remember to check with your doctor and pharmacist before you start taking any supplements as they may interfere with any medical conditions or medications or even other foods.
Exercise does it for me. I can start to feel down when sitting at home with my little one. A trip to the gym for a vigorous workout and a quiet shower will perk my mood right up. It only lasts for the rest of the day so repeat as necessary. I disagree with anyone who says they can't afford it...you don't need to tell me about being poor (my hubby is a grad student). What do you pay per month for cable, a high cell phone bill, eating out, going to the movies, and other luxuries? I think exercise should be up there with food, clothing and shelter as we all need stable mental health to live a happy life. I hope you will consider it...I don't know how I would survive without it.

Two supplements I have taken for mood and energy are: a B vitamin complex and SAM-e, both of which I bought at Target. The B-vitamins for energy, and the SAM-e for mood (though it is supposed to help with some other things like joints.) The only side effects are with the B-vitamins - it turns my pee yellow. :)

St. John's Wort does work very well (it takes a few weeks to see benefit), but should be alternated with something else in the hot summer months because it can cause sun sensitivity. It also is incompatible with about 50 Rx drugs because it interferes with their action by pulling it out of the body quicker, because it is perceived as a 'poison", (which it is). So you have to google that list and make sure you are not taking or going to be taking any of them. Off the top of my head I remember that Tegretol is one of them, it is used for Seizures, and also for behavior problems in children. But, make sure your diet is good, too, you can't feel good if you are eating junk. Lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, and only small portions of meat (6oz, about the size of a cassette tape) (NOT a video cassette!) and starches. And your brain needs B vitamins to feel good and work well. Talk to a knowlegeable health food store clerk and ask for a women's fromula that includes a balanced portion of increase B vitamins, Essential Fatty Acids, etc. They will know. You could try a colon cleanse product first (usually two bottles, an herb one and a fiber one that you take til they are gone. Then start your good vitamins, take a short walk every day, get enough sleep, and see if you need the St. John's Wort. I always keep it on hand, I have a very stressful life and "haven't got time for the pain". I take it for a month or so if I start feeling blue. That's the nice thing about natural remedies, you don't have to take them continuously like a drug and they are easier to get off of. I know that you asked about vitamin suggestions but I did want to throw out there that yoga and meditation have really done a lot to help stabilize my mood and lift my spirit. When doing meditation, just focus on breathing in and out to the count of 10 and realize that 3 minutes of meditation is just as effective as 13 minutes, 23 minutes, 33 minutes and so on, so just do what you can but always try to do at least 3 minutes. I also take a vegetarian time-released B12 vitamin, Nordic Naturals Omega 3-6-9, and Women's Formula multi-vitamin that I get at Whole Foods and I believe that these help me feel a whole lot better and a whole lot less tired as well.
