Hi I'm looking into buying a baby monitor and would like to know if you have any that you recommend. I need a relatively inexpensive one, less than $40. Thanks

What can I do next?

I've been really happy with this one:

http://www.target.com/
search for Fisher Price Sound Lights Dual Monitor

It comes with two receivers, and both can be battery operated (holds the charge really well!), so I can go wherever I need in the house or yard and still hear my son. Also, the price was more than nice at $33, and my son loves the night-light on the base in his room. We've had it since he was born in September '07, and haven't had any problems.

Good luck!

I have to say that this monitor is more than 40 dollars, but could likely be found at Once Upon A Child for less. We used the Angel Care monitor for both our children and LOVED it. It uses a pad that is placed under the crib mattress. If the baby does not move (including breathing movement) after 20 seconds an alarm will sound in the room and on your receiver. Our daughter was 7 weeks preterm and had sleep apnea when in the NICU. She "recovered" from the apnea before coming home, but this was the only monitor I found that let me actually go to sleep, knowing that if she stopped breathing the alarm would wake me up. We bought it both times at Babies R Us.

I received the Fisher Price 900MHZ Long Distance Monitor at my babyshower and I love it! It's very portable! You can hear a little bit of white noise (static) but I think most monitors are like that. It's $37.99 so it fits your budget. Here's the link:

Hope this helps!

Really loved my Sony Baby Talk monitor (2 years ago). It had a feature that would let the monitor be quiet until the baby made a noise, even if the mobile was playing, it could tune it out and only register baby sounds. FABULOUS!

I have an Evenflo Whisper Connect. The thing I like about it is that it has a walky-talky feature so you can kind of use it like an intercom. It’s really nice for when I’ve left something downstairs that I need my partner to get while I’m changing a diaper. Mine came with two parent units so we keep one in our room and one in the living room. I think mine was about $50 but I’m not sure (got it as a shower gift.)

I am selling it for 25 if you are interested. The base is also a night light and have had no issues with these monitors at all.

The two way feature is great, also look for one that lights up with the sounds. I keep the monitor low, but I can look to see if she's crying. Also, if you're in the shower or some place loud you can look and see.

I have seen several being advertised in the Craigslist.com baby/kids section... try there, but when you pick it up make sure you plug it in and test it before paying.

I also use the whisper one from Evenflo and it works great. One suggestion is to make sure it comes with a battery back up for those nights when the electricity goes out.
