I need a baby monitor so I can return to sleeping in the master bedroom, instead of down the hall from my 14 month old daughter. I borrowed one from my sister-in-law, but it had a lot of static. I am a light sleeper. I need a quiet one.
We have the Fisher Price Private Connection Dual Monitor. It is super quiet and has several different channels that you can try out until you find the clearest one. It has great volume control, ac adaptors, and rechargable permanent batteries, and 2 receivers. It is very sensitive, so I tend to keep in on a lower volume. It's a little pricier than most, but I highly recommend it.
We use the Fisher Price sound and lights ones and they are ok but also have some static. Some areas of the house are more staticy then others. Sorry but I don't think you'll find one that's perfectly quiet.
You could try using the one you have and actually place it right outside the master bedroom door. That way if she cries you'll hear it, but you won't hear the static.
I have an Evenflo Whisper Connect...no static whatsoever. I love it and it picks up the noise. My son sleeps on one side of the room and the monitor is on the other and I can hear everything. It also has one of those lights, the louder the noise, the bigger the light gets. By light I mean a series of red dots.

I feel your pain! I am a VERY light sleeper, to the point where I wake up when the heat or AC kicks on. We have a Sony Baby Call monitor which we got at Babies-r-us. Our home is 3500sf and I can take it pretty much anywhere without it going out of range. The nice thing about it is that you have multiple channels to set it on so if one has static then you can switch it, we never encountered any static. Also it has two modes, one is the monitor on all the time so you can hear anything and the other is voice activated which is what we use. It only clicks on in our room when the baby fusses. I suggest a video monitor. This is the model I have and it works great. I had a baby monitor (only sound) and video monitor it's a lot better, you have both and you can watch your baby during night too.

We have babycall from Babies R Us, by Sony model # NTM-90.
It has AWESOME rececption--my husband can go to the far side of the room, turn away from the transmitter, and whisper in a voice I can barely hear if I was in the same room and it comes across loud and clear on the transmitter.
The transmission range is great--we can hear it anywhere in our two story 4 bedroom house.
It has volume control and a large number of channels (in case your neighbors have the same product).
Both the transmitter and receiver can be charged by plugging in so you don't need special rechargeable batteries.

We have a Fisher Price one that has a weird looking Star-Trek like base and 2 receivers, both have rechargeable batteries. I think it is VERY quiet. I hear every sound my daughter makes but hardly any static, even when it is all the way up. I love having the two receivers too, one upstairs and one downstairs and they can go anywhere and even have a belt clip. I love ours!
