Hi

I have been suffering from severe sore throats over the last couple of months. Been tested for strep. Went to the doctor was given amoxy for 10 days and it did not clear my sore throat. Then doctor gave me a steroid pack-medrol. Helped but sore throat came back in a couple of days. Went to an ENT doctor yesterday and he said my tonsils looked fine and there were no lumps/tumors, etc...he wants to do a naso endoscopy. Has anyone been through this test? Of course doctor said it is no big deal...but the thought of a tube in my nose and throat while I am awake is not sitting well with me!

Thanks

What can I do next?

Hi K. been there, done that. It is kinda ucky, and sort of uncomfortable, but it is a great diagnos tool that isn't too invasive. My ENT did it in his office while I sat in a chair (we were worried I had some kind of problems with my vocal cords like tumors) it didn't take long and after a couple of minutes I didn't even feel like I needed an advil. Just don't dwell on it and get it done, to know is better than guessing, then getting the correct treatment will be worth a few minutes of discomfort. Good luck

I would look online to see what it is exactly but I think I had that done prior to my sinus surgery some years back.

They spray psuedosnepherine (sp?) in your nostrils to shrink all the tissues then they put the skinny metal rod/tube up the nose to look around.

As long as you sit still and don't move, you will be perfectly fine. It's not painful but if you do move around the cold metal touches the insides of your sinuses which is just an uncomfortable/odd feeling. They may use tubes now, I'm not sure. My procedure was long time ago.

My doctor had no bedside manner and didn't tell me anything he was doing so I was really freaked out. All he needed to tell me was to hold still but he didn't!

You had a baby, this is nothing. I wish you luck!

Hi K., I've had this test done in a drs office. It really isn't a big deal and believe me I'm the biggest sissy around! He'll spray a little numbing solution into your mouth to numb the back of your throat. That's the worst part-it tasted nasty. He'll leave the room to give it a few minutes to work. He'll come back in about 5 minutes and you'll put your head back and he sticks this tiny tube up your nose and down your throat-it really is tiny and you can still talk or nod whatever you want. I also have the biggest gag reflex-I gag when I brush my teeth but I didn't gag then. It's over in about 2 minutes or less. Good Luck and if I can do it you can. I was so worried I lost sleep over it-it's not worth it. T.

I had this done about 10 years ago when I was having a constant sore throat. It's no big deal at all from what I recall. For 2 years I had a sore throat and couldn't stand it anymore. I finally figured it out to be post nasal drip although I didn't really have other allergy symptoms; coughing, sneezing etc. I finally had great results w/an acupuncurist and a Chinese herbalist. I haven't had a cold or sore throat in years.

I'm not big on taking any sort of drugs and would not recommend the valium like another poster did. It really is nothing. The thought of it is worse than the procedure.

Good luck

K.,

I've never had a tube put in my nose and down my throat, but I can tell you that my son did when he was 7 years old and handled it like a champ. They were looking at his vocal cords and adenoids. The doctor coaxed him through it (you'll get to see your own boogies on the camera) and he did very very well, fully awake.

I don't know if that helps ease any of your fears, but I thought I'd tell you anyway.

Hope everything turns out OK!

Hi K., i had this test a couple of years ago when i was haveing throat problems. It is an uncomfortable procedure but not as bad a i thought it would be. It can trigger your "gag" reflex so be aware of that. Once the tube gets through your nose ( i found that to be the most uncomfortable part) then its not to bad.good luck

WOW I am glad to know that I am not the only one going through that madness. Only it has gone through my entire family including me. It hasn't gone away completely either, although I will admit, that my doctor never wants to do that naso endoscopy. we went through the rounds of amoxy (all of us) husband went through the same steroids (medrol) and it still hasn't gotten one hundred percent better. But we are sticking with the cepacol-cough drops and vicks on toes, tylenol and motrin for fevers and plenty of soup. It's bound to get out of our system.

But best of luck if this is what your doc. says. If it were me, I'd go for a second opinion.

I don't have any information about this procedure, but I would suggest asking the doctor for a valium to take before the procedure if you are nervous. I can say that it will definitely help with any anxiety you have and will calm you down. Good luck

HA! I really laughed--as that post from Lori sums it up! You survived labor, delivery, a newborn, teething, vaccinations, AND the Corporate world--how bad could this test really be? LOL Good luck!

Dear K.,

Go have the test. Like your doctor told you, there's nothing to it. I had the test, and hardly knew anything was being done.

There's another cause of sore throats and hoarseness. They can be caused by acid reflux. This is when the stomack acid backs up into the throat and burns it. If your ENT can't find anything, you may want to follow up with a gastroenterologist to do an endoscopy to determine if this is the cause. This test is done while you are asleep.

Good luck. Don't worry. It's all over before you know it.
Sincerely, M.

Hi K.:
Hope this is not way off the mark, but your story made me think of my husband. Starting a few months ago, when the spring allergy season began, he started having a sore throat a lot, for weeks on end. This is the one part of his body that takes the brunt of colds, etc., and he feels miserable when it's sore. His doctor finally determined that he was having post nasal drip, as his only allergy symptom, and that it was irritating his throat. After the first few doses of a decongestant allergy medicine, his symptoms went away. He continued to take it through the worst of the seasonal allergy time, and is now off the pills, with no symptoms. FYI: he took Claritin-D, because it's a non-drowsy formula. I take Zyrtec-D, which no longer makes me tired, but new users tend to feel exhausted by it. Any over the counter products with a decongestant in them are now kept behind the pharmacy counter.
Hope it could be just that simple for you, too!
Regards,
S.
