I need to get an Endoscopy and I am really scared! Could anyone that's had one please tell me what it's like and what I can expect? I think they're going to put me to sleep or give me meds to make me really drowsy. I don't like that feeling at all but probably wouldn't want to do it without the meds right? Please help!
Thank you so much!

So What Happened?

Thank you all sooooo much for your responses! I feel much MUCH better about having to get it done! I really do appreciate everyone who took the time to write and the details of the procedure that aren't really talked about in the pamphlets the doctor gives. Phew! Now I can relax about it! =)

Don't be scared & let them give you the meds. I had to go through one w/out the meds when 5 weeks pregnant & would not wish that on anyone!

Everyone says don't be scared but we are always afraid of the unknown. It really is a simple procedure that can be done in a doctor's office or at the hospital. Mine was at the hospital but very quick. They give you Verset (sp) a drug that relaxes you and makes you forget! Forgetting is good. After that I don't remember much till the doctor was telling me the results. You will need a ride home after and will probably be drowsy depending on how you react to the meds. If you are still scared talk to your doctor about the actual procedure. They can walk you through it. Hopefully nothing is wrong and this is just to rule out something. Good luck!

Hi, Kikshsu -
Please don't be frightened. It's nothing. I've had several, and before my first one, I was really scared, too. Mine are done at Desert Endoscopy, but I'm presuming the procedure is basically the same everywhere. You will be taken back where you will undress, put on a gown and get into bed. Nurses will ask a ton of questions, and place an IV in your arm. For me, getting the IV is the hardest part. When it is your turn, they will wheel your bed back to the endoscopy room. You will be conscious while they get you arranged in the bed the way they need you. When the doctor comes into the room, they will put a drug called Vercet (sp?) into your IV. A warm sensation will go up your arm, and from your prospective, you will go to sleep. It is a conscious sedation, but you remember nothing. YOu will wake up in about a half hour in the recovery room where the doctor will come in and discuss the results of your test. You may have the slightest of sore throats after, but nothing major. If they were to show you a video tape of the procedure, you may be surprised to find that you appear to be awake, following instructions, etc., but you will not be aware of that. Try to relax, it's really easy.
Good luck.

Our 2 year old had it done (well, she was 2 when she had it done, she's now 3). They put her to sleep. There's no way out of being put to sleep. It took less than 1/2 hour and she got to go home pretty much right after. It's really an in and out procedure and she didn't have any pain after. Good luck!

Hi there!! O.k., check this out, I have had 3 endoscopies. They are not bad at all. They will put you out, and the scariest part of it all is the mouth piece you have to wear. It is like a tube thing that you have to clinch in your teeth right before they knock you out. I don't know why they make you do it BEFORE they knock you out but that is definately the scariest part of the whole thing. The only other part that I can't stand could be depending on the person, but I have a very hard time remembering anything from the day of, and the day after. It is almost like 2 days of my life that just never existed. But I think it is like that anytime you get put under. I hope I have been of some help to you, don't worry, it is a very simple, fast, and normal procedure but I understand your worries, I was scared my first time too. If you have any other questions, feel free to email me at any time. Try to have a good weekend.

I just had an endoscopy procedure (EGD) 2 weeks ago. I presume you are having an upper GI procedure. I was really scared, too, but the fear is unfounded. I had to fast for 4 hours before my check-in time. It is only about a 5-10 minute procedure. My doctor put me out using Proptol, but I understand some don't put you completely under. There is no pain except a "pinch" when the IV goes in your arm. With Proptol you awake in about 30 minutes after the procedure feeling great (not nauseous) and can go on about your day. You will need someone to drive you home. I was told I may have a slight sore throat, but I didn't. Good luck to you!!

At the time they gave me and IV and i felt a little out of it but it did not hurt. When the camera went down my to my stomach i never knew it will be alright good luck.

I didn't have one done but my son has had two.
They do put you to sleep (much more comfy for the patient).
He didn't feel a thing (we-his parents were not allowed to stay with him)) from what he remembers.
They do put you in recovery for a little while to get you to where you are coherent and awake. You also do need someone to drive you home. I'm sure your doctor informed you of that. (did they give you any info?)
He did have a little discomfort when swallowing but not where it was unbearable. I don't believe he even used lidocaine spray either-we tend to use that for sore throats.
You can also go on Wikipedia.org which gives you lots more information about the test and shows you pictures.

Hope this helps if even a little. You will be fine- a little loopy but otherwise good. Hope all comes out great for you. Take care.

I had a colonoscopy done. They wanted to do a endoscopy but, since I wanted to be under they said they should just do the colonscopy then. I felt nothing or remember a thing except for this...the night before I had to cleanse my system out and that was HORRIBLE. I was up and down all night going to the bathroom. Then after the procedure I was in the recovery room and I felt the urge to pass gas and I held it in because my husband at the time boyfriend was sitting right there and then I couldnt hold it in any longer and out it came. It was so horrible and then the doctor/nurse lets me know that is normal we had to pump air in you to see your colon so you need to pass all that air out before you go. Wish I knew that ahead of time. GL!

I have had one to treat endometriosis. Yes, they will put you to sleep. The worst part is the gas leaving your abdomen at recovery. It burns your nose and throat. Afterwards, please rest so that you allow yourself to heal. No worry's God has it all under control.

I had an endoscopy along with my colonoscopy. The anesthesia they gave me worked really fast - awake one minute, gone the next and I woke up feeling really good - without any hangover at all. There was no residual pain in my throat. My husband drove me home but after lunch I was driving my car and I climbed a ladder to hang some stuff. By far the worst part of the procedure was the prep for the colonoscopy.
