I have twins, but I've never understood why this is such an important issue. What does it matter, if they're healthy and happy?
I just found out that my boys are MZ twins. Origionaly after they were born my doctor had a biopsy done on my placinta and it came back that my boys were DZ. With further test the doctors could not explain what is the issue with my smaller boy. Well now 3 years later one doctor actually looked at both of my boys and stated just by compairing them that they might be mirror image mz twins. So we did the blood test and she was right that were infact MZ twins. We knew that that looked very close but because of the size diffrence we never thought about it.
Has anyone gone through this or thought they had one type of twins when they had the other.
monozygotic twins and Dizygotic twins are the medical terms for identical and fraternal. I dont have any medical or science background. i have just been looking for answers on why one of my twins was so small and to this date has not cought up to this brother. for us knowing was a big part in finding out what can be done for my son, to help him catch up. For the most part he is healthy but there are still some weight issues and development issues.
thanks for your comments.

If I recall DZ is fraternal or 2 eggs (Di zygotic) and MZ is identical or MONO zygotic.
I don't have any personal experience but I think twins are interesting. Esp Identical :)
I know many people didn't know the difference between MZ and DZ twins but we do now! I hope you are not put off by our ignorance of these terms.
There are probably not a lot of people who have had your *exact* experience, but many people share the experience of having a child that lags behind his peers in terms of development, myself included. You are not alone. I know it hurts, and I know you are afraid. Try to take it one day at a time. I can tell that you have a good attitude, and this will make all the difference. Best of luck to you. -B.
Hi S.,
I'm a DZ twin and my husband has two sisters who are DZ twins as well, though for most of their childhood they were believed to be MZ because they appeared to share one sac when they were born. Modern technology is so much more accurate than 30+ yrs ago, but as you've found there are occasionally still mistakes!

I'm sorry I don't understand what MZ or DZ means. Could explain it please.
I have twin girls and the drs could not tell without testing if they are identical or fraternal. We decided it is not that important and will find out as they get older I guess. But the one that was on the bottom is smaller than her sister. They were 1-1/2 lbs different in weight and 1 inch smaller in length. She has started to catch up a bit, and the doctor feels she is normal in every way, but growth wise is still smaller (4-1/2 months old now). I'd say as long as his own growth chart is going well and the doctor feels he is healthy, don't worry. Just keep an eye on him. Even though they share the same chromosomes they are still individuals (I know you know that :-)!
Happy twinning! I get those questions all the time "Are they identical?" (And a funny look when I say we're not sure!) "Who is older?" (like that 2 minutes matters? Actually, the smaller one beat her sister out of the uterus).
I have 5 children, 3 girls then twin girls, and love it, even though it is crazy at times.
Take care

Hi, I don't have any firsthand experience, but congrats! My dad is a DZ twin and I had always, always thought I'd have twins, as they run on both sides of my family (I didn't).
Sounds like your boys will have a special bond.
You must have a science background b/c you’re the only other person I’ve met on this board to talk about MZ vs. DZ. To others reading Stacey B defined it correctly.
I don’t have any twins in my family but a friend of mine had twins a couple of years ago. They originally thought the girls were MZ (for the first 10 mo. they were nearly impossible to tell apart other than the pink nail polish dad maintained on the foot of the oldest.) Now they’re not so sure. The girls still look a lot alike but there are some differences that seem to suggest DZ (one of the girls has Dad’s smile the other has Mom’s.) They talked about getting genetic testing to find out for sure but decided against it. Aside from the fact that their HMO wouldn’t pay for it they decided that it really wasn’t important. Plus they get a kick out of giving silly responses to nosy strangers that ask if the girls are identical. They’re very private people and are really put off by people they don’t know inquiring about their kids. My favorite response I hear them say was “only one of them.”
I am a twin, but don't understand what MZ and DZ stand for.
