Mylicon for Use in "Gassy"babies

My one month old son is quite cranky after feedings. He is on formula, has been since 2 weeks old. He will arch back and cry and cry. It seems like he is trying to have a bowel movement, pass gas, or generally uncomfortable. Yet, it is not after EVERY feeding... it seems to be a couple of times a day. But nonetheless, hard to handle and sad to see. I have heard mom's use the Mylicon drops for this purpose. Any thoughts?

What can I do next?

I say give it a shot. Think of it as if it works it'll be a releif for both of you. My son took lots of it as an infant. If you feel more comfortable ask the Dr.

I know Mylicon works for many people, unfortuntely it didn't work for my duaghter. She had a lot of gas from the type of bottles that we used. We switched to Dr. Brown's bottles and that helped cut down on the gas a lot so there was a lot less discomfort for her! ;-)

Good Luck

Hi,
PLEASE have your baby seen by a pediatrician for acid reflux. If the pediatrician doesn't take you seriously, then see a pedi-gastro doctor. The arching is a classic sign of acid reflux. My oldest daughter had that - both my kids have reflux but had completely different symptoms. I never realized the arching was a reflux sign - we used to jokingly call her "Archie." Sometimes I felt she was going to arch right out of my hands. She had other obvious symptoms too - so she did get diagnosed fairly quickly - but a couple years later - when I finally had a moment to breathe - I was doing some research about acid reflux and found the arching symptom. It broke my heart that we used to call her "Archie" when it was actually a symptom of her pain. He may also be having colic and gas - my oldest also had colic. But she also had acid reflux. I knew when the colic went away, but the acid reflux is still here 10 years later. Colic is a "walk in the park" compared to the acid reflux. Other mothers will tell you "oh, my baby was so colicy" - but believe me, I'm sure you have your hands full with an acid reflux baby - it's exhausting. The good news is that there are meds they can give to relieve him. The bad news is they take 7-10 days to get into the system. Also, as he grows - watch for his signs to return. He will outgrow his medicine dosage and will need to have it adjusted. And since it takes so long for it to get into his system - trust your mommy instincts and bring him to the doc right away to have it increased. That was the one thing I wished someone had told me about acid reflux in babies, above all the other things. Call the pedi now. Your baby is very uncomfortable I bet. Good luck ! Oh - one more thing. The 2 most important things I found for my baby was that she absolutely needed to get her rest - we had to adjust our lifestyle so that we were home for naps - no hoping she'd sleep in the car, etc.. Being tired made her unable to cope with the pain of acid reflux. Second was to mimize her crying. Not to spoil her (but you can't spoil an infant) - but whenever she started crying, the acid reflux really got uncontrollable. So to jump on and anticipate situations that would make her cry and to try to minimize the crying was important for us. I have to say my second child, who also has reflux, wasn't like this - but she never did the arching either. So each child is different. Just don't let other mothers let you feel like this is normal or something they've dealt with - because most of them haven't and it is HARD! Good luck.

My daughter experienced that discomfort for 1 1/2 month. At first I thought it was b/c we were mixing breast milk w/ formula, but then we tried both separate she had the same reaction. The Mylicon did nothing, we only used it a couple times and stopped. However, we found that she was more comfortable if we stood and burped her and let her relax partly on our shoulder and chest after each feeding. It was so concerning and painful to witness for us, we took her to the doctor for a check up and they basically said she was adjusting to the formula. Then one day she just outgrew it and we didn't even realize it, because her cringing, and tightening wore off as she got closer to two months.

I never had much luck with mylicon drops in either of my boys, but they both had reflux. Arching back could be a sign of reflux (according to my pedi) and both my boys did that. We had them both on zantac and it helped 100%. They were much more comfortable. I would try some of the other recommendations you got, and if nothing seems to work, talk to your ped. It could be reflux. Good luck!

I used them with my 3rd child. Loved them I would give him a dose and then do bicycle legs and push his legs to his tummy and then I could usually hear all the gas coming out (Hee Hee). I could tell that he felt so much better. And it was only bad for a couple of months and I havn't used it since.

why do people want to medicate their babies for their problems instead of getting to the root of the problem...perhaps it is the formula you are feeding your baby. Formula is not the ideal food for baby, breast milk is! So, I won't be judgmental towards the people that formula feed, but perhaps the formula is what is making your babies so miserable. They do make formulas that are easier to digest such as Enfamil Gentlease or 'hypoallergenic' ones like Nutramigen or Alimentum. In these formulas the milk proteins are broken down to cause less gas and are digested easier. If reflux is still an issue keep baby upright after feedings and see a specialist.

J had Reflux and we had a hard time getting things just right to have a happy baby. He took 0.09 of Reglan about 15 minutes before EVERY bottle. He also had Mylicon drops in EVERY bottle, in the water, before the powder was added. We used Nursery water from Wal-Mart and it doesn't have all the additives from City water like Chlorine and other chemicals. Start with less drops and see if that works, you always want to use the minimum.

We got all the bottles for the day lined up, used the appropriate amount of drops, added the appropriate amount of Nursery water, then closed it up and put them up. Some went in the diaper bag, others went in the fridge for later use. When the powder was added we didn't vigorously shake the bottles, we rolled them back and forth to limit the amount of foam and bubbles in them.

We used warm water to heat the bottles to room temperature then added the powder, that way it wasn't too cold for the little tummies.

The times he is acting cranky and arching his back may be when his poo is moving around in his bowels. I have IBS and there are times when the pain can bring me to my knees, and it's always when things are moving around inside.

Before you go crazy with treatments for acid reflux and gas and constipation (whether drops or medications or whatever that will just treat the symptom), there are some very simple things you can do naturally. I have quite a few friends who have solved these problems in their babies without all that expense and anxiety. It can be done whether the baby is on formula or breast milk. It's a question of adding a balanced supplement (not just a single ingredient or nutrient) in your case thru the bottle but also thru the mom's nutrition if she's nursing. Let me know if you want more info.

My 5 month old did the same from about 2 months to 4 months old. She was a very fussy eater and sometimes (not every bottle) she would completely freak out. I talked to the Dr about it and I used mylicon. I choose not to change formulas b/c she was not doing it every feeding - we tried mylicon (which worked wonders for my older son) - it didn't do much. So I tried the next nipple size up (Dr. Browns bottles - they rock) and stretched the interval between feedings to 4 hours instead of 3. It worked! Maybe this is will work for your son too. good luck.

You can use the drops, but also try warm sugar water, it will not hurt your baby I had to use this to help my little one, and it could be the formula he is on, my daughter had to be on similic allimentum bc of the intolernce to formula we tried the regular similic and the similic isomil but they did not help what so ever the allimentum was the only thing that worked

Hi,
I used gripe water with my baby. It is all natural and I got it at the health food store. I know many moms who swear by it. It helped a little, however, in the end it turned out he was having trouble with all the dairy I was eating (he was breastfed) so I ended up going off all dairy until I was finished breastfeeding and he was completely fine as long as I didn't eat dairy. It was a small sacrifice to make to have a happy comfortable baby. So maybe check the formula?
Best of luck!

K.,
I used Mylicon for my kids and it helped but only temporarily. The one thing I found was Humphries #3 (I hope I spelled that right), I didn't get it in the regular pharmacy like CVS or Walgreen, but at a town's pharmacy. They look like little tiny sugar balls and you dissolve it in water (like a teaspoon of water) and give to him. That was like a miracle for my son. Also, I changed the formula to the low iron one, because he would be constipated for days. That also helped for a little while and at 4 months I had to switch him to regular milk mixed with water.
But anyhow, try and see if you find the Humphries #3, if I find it, I'll email you and let you know. I know you are a little far, but we could try to work it out. I know what it is to have a baby that just cries and cries of gas pain!!
Best,
I.

All babies are really gassy and it may not be the gas so much as the formula may not agree with him and make him upset. Generally the basic formulas are pretty much the same although some babies are sensitive to some minor differences. But you might want to try a Soy or formula for Sensitive babies and see if that helps. Oh. Almost forget. I read that when babies eat (also it happens with adults but we are used to it) the body gets ready to have a BM. and this can cause the stomach to contract and cause discomfort. This should pass as he gets a bit older.

Our pediatrician's office didn't have a problem with us using them on either of our kids, but they did caution that the best results are only when it is used consistently.

So, don't expect that it's going to work when used as needed, but try to keep up on it proactively.

When our kids were gassy, we found the best way to alleviate it was to lay them across our laps and pat their backs - the pressure on their tummies (also by tucking their knees into their chests) helps to pass the gas and alleviate the pressure.

I'm having a similiar issue with our 5 week old. Ped recommended switching formulas to Enfamil Gentlease or Gerber's Gentle Plus b/c easier to digest...We just switched so can't tell if it's working. We tried Mylicon drops and didn't seem to do much so we stopped. She said it was normal for newborns at this age. Ped also recommended to put baby on tummy across your lap or when changing their diaper do bicycle w/ their legs to get things moving. We've found he has to burp in order to continue eating. Good luck!

All newborns are gassy and have digestive issues. Their systems are immature. Everyone runs for prescriptions and blames it on reflux. Try going to your nearest health food store and getting a probiotic made for infants. Give it at least a week to kick in (you would do this with any method of change) and see if it makes a difference. It did for my newborn and we kept him on it for 4-6 weeks before taking him off. I would at least try natural methods before jumping the gun and going a medicinal route. I think if you google and research you might find other benefits a probiotic has over Mylicon drops. Good luck!

Okay this is what happened to me with my first daughter. I started out breastfeeding her and at first everything was going good. Then she started getting where she wouldn't feed. She would act like she was so hungry but when she would try to eat, she would feed for like two seconds and then cry and arch her back. I was slowly but surely losing my mind. We would be up at 2:00 a.m. and she would scream and cry for two hours. I called the lactation consultants and the pediatrician. They couldn't figure out what was wrong. Finally looking through my book, I noticed the symptoms for GER or gastroesophogical reflux. Selena had many of the same symptoms including arching her back and extreme fussiness. I took her to the pediatricians and the ped. agreed with my diagnosis. She told me that Selena was lactose intolerant and that she would have to be put on formula like soy formula. Well long story short, she did not do well with that formula and we had to go to Nutragamin. It is an almost end of the line formula. Almost like a last resort formula. Anyway, she still spit up ALOT and she still has acid reflux. She has been on medicine for it for on and off. So I really hope he doesn't have it but just in case, I shared my story with you in case he doesn't get better. Good luck. Also just to add, we switched to Dr. Browns bottles also. They are awesome. Supposedly they grow out of reflux but my daughter hasn't. But she can drink regular milk now and she loves it.

Wonderful and safe product. Yes expensive but I got lots of samples from my doctor and I buy it on ebay where I can save up to $10 a can when I purchase them in lot sizes....so very manageable. Don't delay ;)

I was told that the arching back and fussiness COULD be infant reflux. There was a point when we thought our daughter had it - and she may have. There is a prescription for infant reflux, but we declined to use it. We tried to keep her upright or inclined for about half an hour after feeding, and also tried to help her by inclining her when she was sleeping. You might call your pediatrician's office and see what they say. If it is just gas, we did and do use Mylicon and also used to pump and bicycle her legs to get gas out. It helped! Now she is a year old and can get it out herself :) You might also try gripe water, I believe they have it at Walgreens. It is a natural tummy soother, made with calming herbs. That really helped our daughter. Good luck! I know it is sad to see them hurting and not know what to do about it. But rest assured, if he is eating, pooping, and peeing regularly he's probably doing fine. All newborns have very sensitive digestive systems at first.

I had to put my youngest on formula after issues BF, I went with similac advance (what I used with my first) she was in so much pain, screamed her little head off. I used it with my daughter and it worked wonders. I used the Target brand. I spoke with my pediatrician about it and he said that they are all the same so it's okay to use generic. He also said that it is okay to put it in every bottle. I didn't do it every bottle, but I did use it a couple times a day. As she got older and her bowel movements became more regular, I cut down on the drops and by 5 months she was off them completely.

Our first went though this around 4 weeks & our newest is giong through it now.

We thought it was constipation & called the pediatrician. He assured us this was a normal part of infant development. There comes a time - between 2 & 6 weeks or so - when the baby starts to "learn" his bowels. They go from automatic movements to more manual ones (for lack of a better term).

It may seem like he's in pain & really straining, but it's normal at this time. If your son passes any hard stool, that's definitely a sign of constipation. Otherwise, use the Mylicon if you think it helps. We use it & I'm not really sure it works.

Also try really burping him well so that he can get some of that gas out before it goes down to his lower GI.

Good luck & congrats on the lil bundle!
