My Son Sitting with Legs Bent

My son is 2 1/2 years old and he has always since he has learned to sit up has always sat with his knees bent and his legs out beside him. I was told that this was not good for him by several people and other people say that it is fine. I'm just afraid that his knees may hurt him later in life. If you can please let me know if you had the same problem with your kids and how you dealt with it. Thank you.

My 6 year old daughter sits flat on her bottom with her knees straight out in fron of her and her lower legs sticking out to the sides at a 90 degree angle. I asked her pediatrition about it and he said it was nothing to worry about that she was just extremely limber.

I think you need to stop it now....I'm in the same boat my 22 month old sits like that....I sit like that and have for 34 years. We are trying to break my son of this of it now before it becomes a habbit. I can hardly sit any other way without being uncomfortable... I at least have one foot under me when I sit at all times. I just tell him constantly to put his legs out not to sit that way and he does for like 5 minutes and then puts them right back.

My sons pediatrician told me that it could cause his feet to go inward when he walks eventially. It was funny that she told me this because like I said, I have sat like that for the last 34 years but for the last 5 years my husband had been telling me that my feet turn in when I walk. Nobody had ever mentioned this to me before so after hearing this from my sons pediatrician, I thought I bet that is why my feet are curving inward now. As far as the knees hurting....mine do and they crack when I walk....they didn't used to do that either.

Now, I am not saying that my feet curving inward is definately from sitting that way or my knees cracking all the time but I think it is very likely. So if you have the chance now to correct they way your son is sitting, it not going to hurt.

I have twin 17 month old boys and one always "w" sits and the other sits on his bottom. The w-sitter is having trouble walking because his foot has slightly turned in from the position it is behind his bottom when he is on his knees. My other one has no problems. The pediatrician wasn't worried but now after our ECI OT saw his feet and legs it has become an issue. She recommended to obviously take him out of it and place him one his bottom, have him wear his shoes more often, even around the house and we do some stretches every single time we change his diaper. It is like a butterfly stretch on his back to get his legs more flexible to fall outward so he can sit correctly. Good luck.

I and several other children in my family have sat and sit that way. It has never caused a problem. I can still sit that way its just not lady like and now that Im a little overweight its not that easy either. I would say dont worry about it! Hope this was helpful!

That is totally normal for some kiddos. My cousin- who now has children of her own ... sat like that throughout her childhood - she went on to be a cheerleader in high school etc and has never had problems from it. Actually now her 3 year old little boy sits like that :-) It is just how the little one chooses to sit. I would not worry one bit about it

I'm no doctor but my sister sat that way FOREVER. She's 34 now. She hasn't had any problems. She is not that atheletic but I don't know if her sitting had anythiong to do with that.

I would talk with your doctor. From my understanding he'll be fine. There are so many myths out there.

I work with many Physical Therapists - They have told me that it's NOT good at all for children to "W" sit.. It will affect his walking, sitting and posture sooner and later in life since his muscles won't be developed. So.. strongly discouraging him is recommended.

I was encountering the same issue (knee sitter) with my son while we were working with an occupational therapist through ECI. She said that it could cause joint alignment issues for him as he grew, and we stopped it by adjusting his rotation so he stayed on his butt.

The issue was him putting his butt between his feet (making a W from the front). If your son is sitting with both feet on one side, I don't think it's the same thing - and probably not a problem at all.

you definitely need to break him of that habit! my younger sister sat like that when she was little and a couple years ago she began having knee pain and had to go through physical therapy for it. her doctor guessed what it was from and said he has seen a lot of kids with the same problem.
